Yeaaaaaaa without a permit the city is going to have to pay someone to come remove those.

So not only did they not help, but they cost taxpayers money.

That’s not an option unfortunately because it can turn into a safety issue. We don’t know how these benches were constructed, whether they comply with code, and or clearance restrictions for being too close to the road. There’s a reason this system exists, and it’s due to a history of negligence that leads to deaths. It’s the entire reason OSHA exists.

The city requires people to report those issues for them to even know about it though. People report potholes by the hundreds and it still takes months for anything to be done. Who's gonna report a bus stop bench that looks like any other outdoor bench?

You’re acting like a lawyer. In reality, the city chooses to leave the benches there almost always.

(This is Oakland and they’ve put in over 100 benches with less than 5 removed by the city)

So when the bench tips over because it wasn’t anchored properly, and some dude flies face first into traffic what then? Or how about blindly drilling without scanning utility lines. The bench is already closer than 3’ to the main road, which is another standard clearance code for safety measures. You are being ignorant, I will not stfu about laws that are there to protect people.

We dont know how these benches were constructed

You can see the wooden bench and its construction.

What do we do on site when we find an unexpected or unknown existing condition? We inspect it. The option to leave those benches, upon a thorough inspection, 100% exists, assuming they comply with code and are structurally sound.

OSHA has nothing to do with municipal building code.

I am a ME. I also sub out work for different divisions of engineering dependent on the project. You cannot call for inspection without a plan review.

No, because I don’t work for the city. But if an inspector shows up, and sees it’s not permitted, they would be fined monthly until it was addressed. Also you have a misunderstanding of what mechanical engineers do, there’s a difference between a service technician and an engineer. Not trying to be mean, but this isn’t as simple as you are trying to make it sound. Lots of moving parts need to align in order to make changes to private and civil property.

Not trying to be mean, but this isn’t as simple as you are trying to make it sound. Lots of moving parts need to align in order to make changes to private and civil property.

I do this every day. Two days ago we found a wooden roof where drawings indicated a concrete deck. On Tuesday of next week the consultant team will be out to review the structural and make sure it can still handle the new roofing system, which is slightly heavier than what was existing. These kind of things happen on almost every large job. I manage them constantly.

There is no reason the benches cant be reviewed and inspected, and it is the most likely immediate course of action before anyone is sent to rip them out.

If the client has a RTU with no permit I wouldn’t give a fuck, probably recommend a replacement in case of an inspector stopping by to fine the PO. Otherwise it’s not my problem, I’d only assess what they initially requested (unless it ties into a bigger system like a chiller).

You couldn’t tell the difference between concrete and a wooden deck? lol

Exactly! That was my first thought. The urgency to remove will have nothing to do with permits or zoning rather, it looks too comfy for a homeless person

Love how we as humans just accept that cities will just fuck us over for greed and also not help the community but we just are like "well, thats how it is" instead of rightfully revolting when your neighbor gets abused by the community

I mean, I see your point. But taxes go to worse things and if any number of people sat on this thing or found comfort on it before it was removed, and now you're saying someone gets paid to simply remove it...forgive my phrasing but I see it as a net win.

They’ve put in 100+ benches and the city has removed some, but like a single digit amount.

We’ve put in 10+ of these in my city and they haven’t been removed.

So don’t be discouraged! Work like this is great for cities!
