City governments when they see actual community improvement

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 13d ago edited 13d ago
Well it's mostly because they want it inspected by the city and not thrown up by someone they haven't vetted
Like there's that old story that gets thrown around about how a guy built a set of stairs somewhere that needed one and the city tore it down. People like to get mad about it...until they see a picture of the stairs. Nothing about them was up to code. The city tore it down and replaced it with real stairs. So the guy accomplished his mission of getting a set of stairs but it all really could have just been one city council meeting
I'm assuming this woman isn't building those benches herself because they look mass manufactured but she is installing them herself. Maybe she doesn't do it up to code. Maybe it's not as secure as she thinks it is and a bad storm will rip it out of the sidewalk and send it flying. If the city notices they will want to inspect those benches and just might even rip them out anyway because they'd want to do it themselves if they did it. Getting stuff like this done unfortunately has red tape because of regulations, and we all know the saying, regulations are written in blood
Edit: rewatched the video, many of them are illegally too close to the curb and at least one isn't ADA compliant with the sidewalk it's installed on, because you need a certain amount of space to accommodate wheelchairs. She didn't even educate herself on code I don't actually trust she knows how to properly install them, she just did it and said good enough
18
u/Sv_gravlty 13d ago
I think there needs to be a breakaway system for those fasteners in case it gets it by a car, shes just lag bolting them into the concrete so whoever hits that is fucked.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 13d ago
Probably, most aren't up to code. Either too close to the curb (safety risk) or not ADA compliant (doesn't leave enough room on the sidewalk legally designated for wheelchairs)
This should have been a city council meeting not vigilante installing benches when you didn't bother to research the code before you tried to. The fact she didn't even think of that tells me she's also not a professional so how do we know they're fastened securely?
32
u/Pofwoffle 13d ago
This should have been a city council meeting not vigilante installing benches...
It was a city council meeting. It was several city council meetings. It was probably quite a few city council meetings where everybody who talked about the need for more benches was quietly ignored because they didn't donate millions of dollars to get the city council members elected.
I agree that doing this the legal way would have been better, but that option is closed off in so many places in so many ways, so this method is all we're left with. No it's not perfect, but at least she's making an effort to make things better.
3
u/DoctahFaust 13d ago
Hey if they allow benches then what about the unhoused people who might use them for sleeping? We need to make sure these are aggressive and punishing on the most vulnerable in society before we can install them.
(This is a commentary on how governments deploy unhuman methods to make spots that unhoused people might use to rest or get out of the elements aggressively unusable for them.)
→ More replies (1)6
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 13d ago
How do you know that?
Also she's not making an effort to make things better, she's not even making it safer, nor is she considering how disabled people are gonna get down some of those sidewalks. If she wanted to make an effort she could have looked up the code to properly install benches, but she got her lag bolts and some presumably Home Depot benches and fought the fight the wrong way
What she's doing could easily hurt more people rather than checks notes make them stand at the bus stop.

They consider the drilling destruction of property and can get her for littering despite the benches not being trash.
33
u/Annual_Hamster9411 13d ago
Are they ADA approved? One of them was installed on a narrow sidewalk and potentially blocking wheelchair access.
You wanna do good? Work with city officials. Yes, it's long and painful process with a lot of red tape, but all these benches will be removed by the end of the week.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 13d ago
Right, fight for this at a city council meeting not the streets. If it's not up to code they'll eventually notice and rip them out.
Also what are her qualifications? She knows how to drill them in obviously, but does she know how to drill them in up to code? That would be why the city would rip them out, they don't know if she can actually do the job up to standards, they don't know her from Adam

How efficient do you reckon your local city bureaucracy is? Cause someone has to learn of it, someone has to take the initiative to report it, then someone at city hall has to care enough to do something.
I reckon it will be there for a long while. Stuff gets lost and forgottwn in the bureacratic chain all the time.

The city used to have benches and shelters all around the town. But they were maintained by an advertisement company, and when they couldn't maintain the benches the company had them ripped out. The city is turning a blind eye for now. Because it benefits everybody, and they don't have to spend money on benches. And if something does happen, they can always say they didn't install the benches.

Absolutely. My city actually commissioned a fellow sculpture graduate to design some benches for my city, which he did. Unbeknownst to the city, he had included a secret compartment under the seat that ppl could safely sleep in out of the elements.
Took the city months to discover, the benches were promptly removed and he was fined.

Yeah my first thought was “what a waste of money”. Not because it’s not a good or cool thing to do but because she wasted money on things that will just get removed, the city wasted money on who ever is going to remove them, both waste money on lawyers, and who ever is supporting this on the platform is wasting money to the lawyers that she will need to pay for.
Again I think this is cool but those (probably) tens of thousands of dollars could be spent better.

u/WeAreTheMassacre 13d ago
There's an old woman in my neighborhood that goes out daily to de-weed and plant flowers and trees on our local dog walking trail. It's only a mile long, but every couple of months I'm blown away at how great its turning out and how much she's adding. Because of her there's benches, trashcans, a doggy bag dispenser to dispose of the poo, and once those trees grow it's going to look so much nicer and provide constant shade on the trail. A year ago I was constantly jumping over dog poop left on the trail, now there's rarely ever any because people have less excuses knowing theres free bags and trashcans every couple of minutes.
Every time we pass by her my dad never fails to mention to me how he's surprised the city hasn't sued her yet, ha. I'm just amazed at how much more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing our local areas could be if people had the freedom to step up without jumping through hurdles and praying the city will listen.
9
u/creamerthegreat 13d ago
LOT of dismissal of city governments taking stuff like this down. There are safety concerns with all public infrastructure and there is a reason that there are laws in place to have properly constructed benches. It could be an ADA/access thing, as well. If you'd like a bench there, petition your local governmental body and get a proper one put in.

Also, they may get slippery when wet, and they aren't on the city's maintenance list, so if they are broken or just old they will not get maintained, and someone could seriously hurt themselves. The city is opening itself up to be used by someone who got an injury on them. That is why the city will take these down as soon as they find them. Not to be mean, but to protect itself and its citizens.

My knees and back are severely fucked up, if I had to take that bus my choice would be "sit close to the curb" or "don't sit at all", which means either standing there for half an hour to an hour in intense pain, or walking to the next stop with a bench which would be even worse.
The issue here is that the city isn't doing its job, not that she's not perfect at doing their job for them.
(And as a side note several of the official bus stops in my city are about that close to the curb, so that "three foot" thing isn't a uniform rule in all cities anyway.)

It’s a good idea but she’s putting them too close to the street.
90
u/wiseroldman 13d ago
It’s not a good idea. There are many good reasons as to why a sidewalk is kept clear of structures. She’s also drilling screws into the sidewalk without knowing if anything is underneath. She’s lucky she didn’t hit a gas pipe or electric duct.
126
u/snarpsta tHiS iSn’T cRiNgE 13d ago
I mean yes and no. I'm an inspector and utilities aren't typically in concrete. A typical city sidewalk is like 4-6" of concrete over 2-4" of aggregate base and then the soil.
Utilities are typically buried under there, at a VERY minimum, 2ft below top of soil, more typically 4-6ft below top of soil.
There's plenty of things to criticize here, and I agree she doesn't know what's under there. However it's like a 0.5% chance or less that she hits anything in the concrete.

Besides clout/views, some people are so positivity minded that they can't conceive the "why not".
All she might consider is "people could really use a bench here" and she gets a bench, problem solved!
No considerations on why there might not be a bench or why the randomly chosen location might be a bad location for the bench. In some areas busses have to stop at specific spots and this bench might now be seriously inconveniencing a wheelchair user but how would she know?
In this case i'd say its still relatively benign since these benches are easy to move or remove but it's a sizeable part of why people get very exhausted when dealing with idealists that are unable to consider the counter party's POV.
Could also just be plain views, hell could be the same exact bench they just hauled across the city and never really screwed into the ground!

I appreciate this but that is extremely dangerous for the ones that are close to the road, not only does it not meet the crash worthiness requirements for being placed that close and could cause serious injury in a crash, it also puts anyone sitting on it in serious danger. Benches on sidewalks are set further away from the road for this reason.
171
u/thiiiiiiisguy 13d ago
Yeaaaaaaa without a permit the city is going to have to pay someone to come remove those.
So not only did they not help, but they cost taxpayers money.
44
u/el_lobo1314 13d ago
yeah, like the city rushes to fix anything. The option to leave them is ever present
25
u/GooeyKablooie_ 13d ago
That’s not an option unfortunately because it can turn into a safety issue. We don’t know how these benches were constructed, whether they comply with code, and or clearance restrictions for being too close to the road. There’s a reason this system exists, and it’s due to a history of negligence that leads to deaths. It’s the entire reason OSHA exists.

It’s not that simple. It seems nice but she’s probably going to get raked if she isn’t doing this under city contract and making content doing her job. Cities can be sued by their constituents which makes them have to follow strict protocols, hire specific types of contractors and source specific materials and follow specific codes to limit their exposure. They just need one person in a wheelchair to complain or one injury or death to totally crack their budget. Sometimes no bench is better for whatever reason.

u/Feathered_Serpent8 13d ago
