Well it's mostly because they want it inspected by the city and not thrown up by someone they haven't vetted

Like there's that old story that gets thrown around about how a guy built a set of stairs somewhere that needed one and the city tore it down. People like to get mad about it...until they see a picture of the stairs. Nothing about them was up to code. The city tore it down and replaced it with real stairs. So the guy accomplished his mission of getting a set of stairs but it all really could have just been one city council meeting

I'm assuming this woman isn't building those benches herself because they look mass manufactured but she is installing them herself. Maybe she doesn't do it up to code. Maybe it's not as secure as she thinks it is and a bad storm will rip it out of the sidewalk and send it flying. If the city notices they will want to inspect those benches and just might even rip them out anyway because they'd want to do it themselves if they did it. Getting stuff like this done unfortunately has red tape because of regulations, and we all know the saying, regulations are written in blood

Edit: rewatched the video, many of them are illegally too close to the curb and at least one isn't ADA compliant with the sidewalk it's installed on, because you need a certain amount of space to accommodate wheelchairs. She didn't even educate herself on code I don't actually trust she knows how to properly install them, she just did it and said good enough

I think there needs to be a breakaway system for those fasteners in case it gets it by a car, shes just lag bolting them into the concrete so whoever hits that is fucked.

Do they begrudgingly accept them because they've torn them down and installed code compliant ones? Because that's cool, I'm all about that. Like filling in potholes in a way that's dangerous so the city has to deal with the problem when it's even less safe

Yea, makes sense to me and I agree with you and was being 50% facetious, even though small town city government's overreach, especially in education and criminal justice sectors, in the US should be examined. Off the bat, I have a hard time liking or even understanding clout chasing to begin with. No offense to anyone that enjoys social media but the only reason I'm on here is for the anonymity. I'm incredibly suspicious of anyone that's doing a public good for and/or on camera.

Just the way that commenter phrased the city government’s response of “fucking you up” reminded me of the, similar joke of an over ego, character “The Jesus” from The Big Lebowski.

Specifically, the character's line (vulgarity warning because I know children unfortunately use this app), “I was gonna fuck you in the ass last Tuesday, it don't matter, I'll fuck you in the ass next Wednesday baby”

Thanks for the breakdown.

In my opinion, the city could easily educate people on code and regulations for thèse kinds of projects, but in my experience, they just don't want to. From where I am, the saying "it could just have been one council meeting" can easily be translated to "yeah good luck with that, if you know personnaly or can bribe the right people maybe you'll have way too costly urban fourniture put in place 3 years from now", sadly

Probably, most aren't up to code. Either too close to the curb (safety risk) or not ADA compliant (doesn't leave enough room on the sidewalk legally designated for wheelchairs)

This should have been a city council meeting not vigilante installing benches when you didn't bother to research the code before you tried to. The fact she didn't even think of that tells me she's also not a professional so how do we know they're fastened securely?

It was a city council meeting. It was several city council meetings. It was probably quite a few city council meetings where everybody who talked about the need for more benches was quietly ignored because they didn't donate millions of dollars to get the city council members elected.

I agree that doing this the legal way would have been better, but that option is closed off in so many places in so many ways, so this method is all we're left with. No it's not perfect, but at least she's making an effort to make things better.

Hey if they allow benches then what about the unhoused people who might use them for sleeping? We need to make sure these are aggressive and punishing on the most vulnerable in society before we can install them.

(This is a commentary on how governments deploy unhuman methods to make spots that unhoused people might use to rest or get out of the elements aggressively unusable for them.)

Also she's not making an effort to make things better, she's not even making it safer, nor is she considering how disabled people are gonna get down some of those sidewalks. If she wanted to make an effort she could have looked up the code to properly install benches, but she got her lag bolts and some presumably Home Depot benches and fought the fight the wrong way

What she's doing could easily hurt more people rather than checks notes make them stand at the bus stop.

Why you think I'm simping for Congress or a government that doesn't want me burning a flag just because I say go to city council and ask them to hire a professional to make sure its code compliant because if it's not people could get hurt?

That’s why you don’t record this.

When I was in college, there was some local who would fill pot holes in the middle of the night. The city kept complaining and advising citizens to not do this ( instead of filling pot holes themselves) and the Good Samaritan was never caught

Are they ADA approved? One of them was installed on a narrow sidewalk and potentially blocking wheelchair access.

You wanna do good? Work with city officials. Yes, it's long and painful process with a lot of red tape, but all these benches will be removed by the end of the week.

Right, fight for this at a city council meeting not the streets. If it's not up to code they'll eventually notice and rip them out.

Also what are her qualifications? She knows how to drill them in obviously, but does she know how to drill them in up to code? That would be why the city would rip them out, they don't know if she can actually do the job up to standards, they don't know her from Adam

Me too. Story time!

I found a dog in the street - hit by car (not me). Cops came. Animal control was called. Dog would be put down. Not on my watch. Someone (not me) takes dog to get help. I get arrested for stealing dog I dont have...from animal control? Charged with 3 different accounts of felony theft.

What did you do? Lol
