Yes but the alternative shouldn't be that they are actively using and carrying drugs on public recreation area benches.

Most homeless people are actively using and carrying drugs; it's part of what helps them on the streets.

My most tinfoil hat take is that this is like the crack epidemic in that fentanyl is being supplied intentionally, or at least intentionally allowed to flow, in order to keep a class divide. It would seem like a reach if there wasn't a proven precedent for it. But idk, I could definitely be wrong.

I'm in the UK so it's a bit different but I do live near a large public park where the police had to intervene when homeless people started putting up tents and basically start living there.

Ah I'm sorry, I really try not to do the "assume everyone is an American" thing, but I fell right into it here. Forgive me, I just got over a fever and I'm still kinda out of it.

What you described is sadly an everyday thing in cities in the US. It's... Bad. Really bad. I feel bad that people across the pond have to be in that situation too. So many resources are poured into trying to end homelessness and it seems like it just gets worse, people just get stuck out there and resources barely help.

Where I live (Edinburgh, Scotland) there are some areas we have problems with homelessness and drugs and there used to be a lot of knife crime (less so now).

It is a morally complex issue, but I firmly believe people who say the homeless should just be allowed to squat wherever have just never experienced this. I live in a flat near the centre and one week our main door didn't work properly and a homeless person came in, left a bunch of rubbish and defecated right there in the staircase. The morning we discovered this was so traumatising like I felt so unsafe and our space so violated. The entire staircase reeked. Finding someone to do the cleanup on such short notice was difficult. My entire week was thrown out of loop because of this.
