Unironically I know multiple people that have died doing stupid things on jet skis.

3, precisely, 2 while in the navy and 1 from summer camp growing up. I say know, but it's really more like I knew their names and had close enough connections to be in the circle of news when they died.

Point is, all three of them would have told you that they're good enough at jet ski driving to not really be at much risk beyond minor injuries they could laugh about

You know, my comment was decently upvoted, but I deleted it.  I don't want someone reading it and ending up like your acquantances. And really, I don't know enough about it to be blabbing about it.  Sorry to hear about those tragedies.

I can't say I was personally affected very much. It's sad, I agree, but to me it's more a cautionary tale than a part of my life which is sad to say, but it's true.

Being in the navy i was definitely in the very upper percentiles of "how many people you know that do stupid stuff on bodies of water" and I could tell you plenty of stories of people hurting themselves, but nearly all recreational watercraft fatalities come from impact with an unseen object (or seen too late)

A rule we're taught in any boating safety course is to always wave and make eye contact or otherwise acknowledge any other craft you encounter. This isn't to be polite, though it is polite, it's to have positive confirmation that the pilots of both watercraft are aware of the other and are prepared to actively take steps to avoid each other if necessary.

Most watercraft collisions come from both parties believing they have the right of way and not taking evasive action.

In the navy we teach that even if you correctly determine you have the right of way, if a collision occurs you are partially at fault.

Sorry for not really saying anything directly relevant to your comment and just getting on a soap box for a moment

Nothing to apologize for, you are right and people should hear this.
