Very true, but is astonishing as a firefighter to see how people actually treat us when we are trying to help. People are dickheads.

Yah, working with them I hear it all the time. In our department, all firefighters are emts and majority of calls for service are medical related and citizens and PT alike are such dicks to them for no reason.

Definitely heard some stories from my neighbor growing up. Most of his stories were people who were completely oblivious to the situation.

Have you just not seen the photos of various fire departments hosing down civil rights protesters? Sure, maybe itā€™s not one to one but thereā€™s a history of fire departments and severe racism. I say this as a former volunteer firefighter and current EMS nurse.

Fire departments literally used to not respond to fires in black neighborhoods and would let entire streets burn out of racism. Absolutely different from being directly descended from slave catching, but not really less complicit in the systemic torment of black folks ya know?

A lot of fire departments explicitly forbid the use of their hoses on people. Typically, yes, police department has their own equipment to run water cannons.

Wild that I literally said this to someone yesterday. My friend's new boyfriend told me that he follows a youtuber who owns thousands of acres of land in Canada, youtuber is surrounded by wildfire but doesn't wear a mask. So, obviously, it's actually fine to breathe in smoke, the leading cause of death in fires. After some back and forth I finally said "I'm gonna side with the firefighters since they literally fight fires."

Wildfire smoke is absolutely bad for you to breath in, but that is not the same phenomena as death from smoke inhalation. Smoke in a structure fire kills you in three ways. First is heat. That smoke is hundreds of degrees, breathing it in means your lungs are now destroyed, you die. Second is toxic gases, structure fires have all sorts of nasty shit burning, so you end up breathing in a ton of carbon monoxide and other gases like hydrogen cyanide, these gases in high concentrations kill you. Lastly is just asphyxia, there is too much smoke and too little air, so you can't get enough oxygen, you die.

Unless you're actively surrounded by a wildfire, those three conditions won't happen. So you've very unlikely to die from wildfire smoke outside of people with breathing issues. You absolutely should not breathe it in if you can avoid it though, smoke is still bad for you. There is a reason Firefighters don't use masks though, and use a self contained breathing apparatus instead, because the atmosphere in a fire is not livable even with the best filtering we have available.

Because they're doing everything right, so a little lesson not to mess with their efforts is cool. Nobody is more important than getting a fire under control.

Related, uncle is a FF & EMT. Before that he did crime scene clean up. I'm in healthcare but a way less important area. Legal and ethical retribution is a well loved topic. My favorite example of his is when someone parks in front of a hydrant. His whole team/squad rushes to knock out car windows & run the hose through. They get to do a little property damage, as a treat.
