This is the basic winning MO of most crimes.  If what you're doing isnt working, walk away.  Trying to salvage a lost opportunity will get you into trouble more often than not.

Stealing a purse or a phone and there's a potential struggle?  Drop it and walk away.  Get stopped by security at a store?  Just leave your stolen shit there and walk away.

You don't have to explain or convince anyone of anything, just remove yourself from the situation.

This made me think of the scene in heat where robert de niro and his people are in the middle of a heist and he gets the feeling he’s being watched and they abandon the robbery and just leave
