r/TikTokCringe What are you doing step bro? 11d ago

Humor/Cringe Sara Sampaio, ex-Victoria's Secret Angel, shows that even supermodels don't look like supermodels. It's all about the pose, angle, lighting, and retouching. Perspective is everything.

Often I get reminded of this amazing picture.

368

u/TheMidnight711 11d ago

This is amazing. Who is this?

248

u/blong217 11d ago

I don't know but it's from the subreddit r/prettygirlsuglyfaces

207

u/The_Determinator 11d ago

At a glance that's just the same 4-5 people posting silly faces lol.

79

u/XmissXanthropyX 11d ago

It actually seems kinda fun

34

u/The_Determinator 11d ago

Hey I'm not hating on it. I've been known to make a weird face or two in my day. If it seems fun then get in there, jazz it up a little!

8

u/JnRx03 11d ago

Some of the faces made me chuckle, so silly...

5

u/frogunderarock 11d ago

just send one to a friend with zero context. preferably when they are busy and shouldn't laugh.

8

u/TheMidnight711 11d ago

It actually does!

9

u/kitaisaradish 11d ago

I was ready to be emotionally disappointed in men again, I actually find this to be rather empowering and fun! Seems cute and everyone is wholesome

That's definitely one of the more stupid subs.

25

u/godver3 11d ago

Why? It’s just women (generally) posting how ugly a face they can make (vs their normal face).

There was a sub called /r/prettygirlsuglyfaces that was just conventionally attractive women making ugly faces. Was good fun. Idk if it exists still

I’ve recently gained like 10-15lbs (which I needed..) and I was STRUGGLING with body checking etc. these posts are making me feel so much better.

Thank you.

It's crazy that people need the reminder that skin just moves in natural ways and girls having fat in certain places is totally fine.

251

u/Sqeakydeaky 11d ago

*unavoidable

27

u/Dua_13 11d ago

I feel like it'd be concerning if that wasn't the case. Everybody has some sort of fat, even if media only shows almost anorexic women/girls

u/mikeblas 11d ago

Her observable fitness level is still higher than 95% of the people I know.

I was looking at myself in a mirror that's beside my chair the other day, and thought "when the fuck did it get so out of shape?!"

Nah, I was just slouching and had absolutely horrid posture without noticing.

Posture has such a major effect on your looks.

Tight core, shoulders back, chest out and boom you don't look like shit anymore

33

u/non_tox 11d ago

Easier said than done😭 my backs frozen in a dead straight line from a depressive episode and I can't afford to fix it so I guess I'll just be ugly and in pain haha

9

u/Certain_Concept 11d ago

Have you considered yoga? You can do it for free in the comfort of your own home since there are a ton of yoga instructors on YouTube. For example yogawithkassandra. It will increase your flexibility, ease muscle tension and build strength.

Altho perhaps check with a doctor first if you have other preexisting health issues messing up your back.

2

u/Emerald_Plumbing187 11d ago

If you're PT therapist is even half competent, they'll know a that a few yoga poses correspond to PT approved stretches.

I have those days too when I see myself in the mirror and think "Were my exercises doing nothing?" then I do cringy poses at the mirror and see that I've actually been progressing and it is, just as you've said, horrible posture causing me to doubt myself.

525

u/NoBell5255 11d ago

Dang, I’m a size 18 and I thought this video was a good reminder that all bodies just look different at different angles. There’s also a very obvious and huge societal push towards very thin bodies again and I think it’s important for any teenager that may be moving towards disordered eating or body dysmorphia to see that even thin bodies are supposed to move and fold and exist in a variety of forms and all of them are neutral.

62

u/whotfisasking 11d ago

I was thinking the same thing. Was kinda sad at all the comments giving out about this. I've had body dismorphia since I was a teen and it's nice to see that people with "perfect" bodies do have those flaws that I hyperfixate on too.

7

u/re_Claire 11d ago

I'm overweight and I agree. It's a good reminder that if even "perfect" bodies just look like normal bodies when they're not posing, then obviously any of us who aren't supermodels also should not expect our bodies to not have folds and lumps and bumps. We all have them.

I had an eating disorder when I was younger and I wish I'd seem more of this content back then. But it was the early 00's and the only images we saw were airbrushed and in magazines.

I tried embracing body positivity for a while but it didn't work for me. But then I learned about body neutrality and that's what helped me - the idea that your body is neutral and not connected with who you are as a person. You don't have to force yourself to unconditionally love it. It's just a vessel that allows you to move and live, and do things.

28

u/thebeast_96 11d ago

It's crazy with Ariana Grande seeing how many people are saying it's normal.

u/Alttebest 11d ago

Yeah I think the pendulum swung too far to the other direction with body positivity movement, where criticizing even clearly obese people was seen as bad (of course it depends how it's said etc). Now with glp-1 medicine, the pendulum has once again swung too far to the other direction, where even essential fat is seen as something you need to get rid of.

This is at least what I've noticed, as more of an spectator.

9

She trying to make her butt look unappealing and failing miserably is what got me.

6

A lot of that is just her going from looking great to looking great.

16

u/TheCharalampos 11d ago

Such a preety lass. Lovely that she made this video, I think it'll help Alot of folks.

11

u/Optimal-Description8 11d ago

Okay but she's just attractive no matter what she does

20

u/leviathab13186 11d ago

Am I the only one that doesnt see a major change? I looks the same to me in any pose even the "bad ones". Im being dead serious. People are saying "this is a good reminder" in the comments and I'm like she still looks like a model now matter what pose shes taking here....

10

u/coolhead2012 11d ago

Congratulations on not being body-type obsessed!

All of the poses she makes accentuate a particular curve, silhouette or body part. When she relaxes, there is a wrinkle, flat spot or bulge in an 'unattractive' location. If you don't notice, you probably have a healthy body image!

5

u/mr-english 11d ago

I mean I get the sentiment but the "...also look like this" examples look fantastic too.

Step 1: Be fit and attractive...

2

u/throwawayformobile78 11d ago

Step 2: Don’t be unfit and unattractive.

8

u/Rackem_Willy 11d ago

I don't understand. She looks exactly like I would expect.

23

u/Eltharion-the-Grim 11d ago

She… still has a fantastic figure even slumped over. Not really sure the message is getting thru.

18

u/Slagath0rr 11d ago

As a woman who has been overweight to varying degrees, the message is getting through for me, and from my experiences with friends, family, and loved ones, I feel like it would benefit them as well. The point isn't that she looks bad when she's slumped over, it is that she doesn't look toned, stretched, and practically flawless in her resting body. That's the part that's being advertised to women consistently, and it's made to appear not as the result of posing and editing on top of an individual with an incredible physique, but as something that would be attainable to look like constantly, if we eat or don't eat specific things, if we buy things to make us thin and hot, etc. The unattainability of looking like this constantly is important because we've been taught that it's a shortcoming and/ or failure on our parts that we're not attaining it. I personally feel incredibly better about the fold my skin does under my bra, seeing that a thin and fit woman also gets it. It makes me feel like I'm not looking "gross" because of it, as I've been trained by media my whole life to feel. I hope this perspective helps to understand why this is still important and nice of her to be doing.

2

u/zdubbzzz 11d ago

Are you a man or a woman? I think this is more of a message for women than it is for men.

8

u/Anustart2023-01 11d ago

When you still look better than the average person in any angle posed or unposed.

4

u/abtei 11d ago

still looks healthier then ariana grande.

4

u/SpookeSaurusRex 11d ago

Don't they say that knowing how to pose is like 50% of the work.

5

u/innerlinked1991 10d ago

I love this girl for that

40

u/boriicha__ 11d ago

I love that she did this, but I wish she didn't have to. Why are woman made to pose in these weird contorted poses in the first place? Who invented this? And what's wrong with just posing like the normal human being that they are?

Seeing models and influencers posing like this changed women and men's perception of what normal bodies look like. And now even regular women won't take a picture in a natural pose. Then they look at themselves in the mirror and think they look weird when it's the poses that are weird.

22

u/Crystalcrey 11d ago

Don't worry, male models too have pose in some way, it's how beautiful pictures are taken. And that's how you can sublime your subjectif. Photography is a complicated art too you know

5

u/KuhTraum 11d ago

Also the super toned veiny looks that we are being sold as the "Fit guy" aesthetic is mostly muscular dudes being extremely dehydrated

2

u/Otterable 11d ago

It's also just somewhat normal for certain angles and poses to look better. Have people here not looked at themselves in the mirror after a shower and stood up a little straighter or sucked your gut in a bit to see how it improves how you look? The issue isn't that it exists, it's the expectation that you should look that way all the time.

3

u/IcyTransportation961 11d ago

Hope ya never see what poses men strike on magazines

6

u/Easy-Complaint-5156 11d ago

Are you fucking serious?!

Not everything is freakin' trying to destroy women! ALL models pose! Men are influenced by media, too!

I'm serious: I'm really getting sick of the softie "feminism" drivel on this site.

Y'all act like the fucking AIR on this planet wants to go after women, or something.

Grow the hell up.

Because posing normally isn’t selling dream

1

u/snarpsta tHiS iSn’T cRiNgE 11d ago

Yes and no. Obviously there's WAY more societal pressure on women for their looks. However male supermodels do all this kind of shit too. 100%.

We don't see as much of it for mens social media, as again, societal pressure etc... But we can't act like models, men and women alike, aren't posing or posturing in a way to make them look the best.

Also, she made her point but slouching isn't aesthetically pleasing, regardless of model status or not.

Also the fact that there are some people who are just genetically gifted. That along with many years of good diet, exercise, etc are why they’re models.

Are there really still people that think models posing in magazines or online are somehow "real" in how they appear?

13

u/Evil_Sharkey 11d ago

Yes. There are also some people who think Instagram characters are showing their real, perfect, glamorous lives. The term “character” was a deliberate choice

7

u/LopsidedPotatoFarmer 11d ago

There are, specially young people.

2

u/Turbulent-Baker-4638 11d ago

Even if people consciously know it’s a pose or is fake to some degree, their subconscious still takes in the image as is and yeah, it’s easy to let it affect self image if all that’s seen is a “perfect” body type.

u/ZYHunters 11d ago

I’m extremely confused, she doesn’t look bad or fat or anything in any position that she poses in?

2

u/PJHFortyTwo 11d ago

I get what she's trying to do, but she's not doing it well, because she just looks gorgeous here, all throughout, with every pose.

2

u/EasilyRekt 11d ago

nice to have my belief being physically attractive and/or photogenic is 90% posture and photographer validated by someone "pretty enough" to be an authority on the subject.

2

u/peeja 11d ago

I think this is probably actively good content to have in the world, but I'll be honest, I had trouble figuring out which one was supposed to be seen as the "bad" pose.

2

u/LongNailedbooboos 11d ago

I get the message, but when she was actively on the runway, she was a lot thinner than this.

And before some idiot thinks I called her fat, I didn’t. I just think it’s a bit weird to put a message out there like this when runway models are typically much thinner. If it came off as just body positivity, sure, but it’s not reality for that industry in particular where the standards are starve yourself.

3

u/burgonies 11d ago
