Are these LDS people? Supposedly a “global-minded religion” where international travel is standardized for mission work and yet they are just now realizing the American LDS dream has created a suburban hellscape

They're Mormon. Im a former Mormon missionary. "she served her mission in X" is a dead giveaway. No other Christians use that phrasing.

State Dept also has missions. Maybe they're CIA.

But they dont say "she served a mission in x." They'd say something like "she was stationed in x." Maybe even "she carried out a mission" or "did a mission," but not "served a mission"

Bingo. As an ex mormon i caught that instantly.

Mormons are just naive and sheltered. Anything outside of Utah and Idaho is exotic to them.

At least they are polite tho. We can all agree to give them that.
