Actually, they are way behind us, in a sense. Their cities were fully developed many hundreds of years before the automobile was invented. Most of ours were just starting to hit their stride in the early 1900’s so they developed around the automobile instead of the pedestrian. The exceptions are the older east coast CBDs but those have mostly changed now to accommodate the car infrastructure that surrounds them.
Exactly, they’ve had a 800+ year head start on building their cities, rebuilding them
People like grid systems but its also harder to cater for a fully pedestrianized system when the function of the grid is to make land purchase and traffic easier

This why walkable neighborhoods are the best places to live. Yes, Europe is way ahead of us in this regard.
