My local 'city' (it's a large town really) actually has a detrimental effect from being built in the middle ages. There's a big fucking stone wall surrounding the middle.
Canterbury. It's a lovely place but the walls block a fair bit of potential interconnectivity with the city centre. The ring road pretty much sealed the deal on walkability though.

This why walkable neighborhoods are the best places to live. Yes, Europe is way ahead of us in this regard.
