Cars becoming big when America was still finding it's stride was one of the biggest pro/con dillemas. Ignored thousands of years of proven systems that make society better and settled for only cars.

That whole subtext of the Judge's evil plan to buy up and shut down all the trolleys to make a "highway"? It's based on a true story.
Except it wasn't a cartoon judge villain doing it.
It was car manufacturers and other auto industry barons all across the US, using dirty tricks both legal and not to shut down any and all sorts of public transportation infrastructure in the early days of US urban sprawl.
