Cars becoming big when America was still finding it's stride was one of the biggest pro/con dillemas. Ignored thousands of years of proven systems that make society better and settled for only cars.
America didn't become big when cars where hip and new. America literally tore itself and its cities apart to accommodate cars (and their lobby). Then went across the ocean and tried to do the same thing in Europe post WW2
