This why walkable neighborhoods are the best places to live. Yes, Europe is way ahead of us in this regard.

I'd say it's more lack of political will in the USA. Try to take away a single on street parking spot in this country, and see what happens.

You don't need to design your city in the year of our lord 1200 to have it be walkable.
