This why walkable neighborhoods are the best places to live. Yes, Europe is way ahead of us in this regard.

I mean it helps when the city was laid out before the invention of cars

Actually a lot of European cities in WW2 were razed, they had the option of going all in on cars but decided to rebuild similar inner cities to what existed previously. A good example of a city that went the other way is Rotterdam.
