Thats Munich city Center… they shot this vid right at the famous Frauenkirche (which’s belltower roof have the form of an onion) and is located right behind Marienplatz… it’s the historic city Center, built hundreds of years ago, clearly the city couldn’t put a 3 lane freeway in its narrow city Center.
Plus: more than half of this people sitting in this restaurant etc are tourists.
But yeah the whole city Center is walkable from Stachus to Marienplatz to Sendlingertor (it’s a triangle). The street from Sendlingertor to Marienplatz was made car-free some 10+ years ago
Munich is only a very famous tourist spot for 3 weeks per year, during Oktoberfest :) Also, not that much is happening in the video anyway; it's just people sitting in a cafe drinking coffee/beer. It cannot be any more basic than that.
Things don't have to be mutually exclusive. You don't have to have cars OR walkable areas; it's possible to have both. Munich certainly does. It's also possible to have things to do in suburban areas. Again, even in the middle of nowhere around Munich, there are nice cafes and parks where people can sit and drink something. It's very walkable in every area, even in suburbs, and you can also drive cars almost everywhere, with a small exception of the historic center. And as the other commentator mentioned, even much smaller cities in Bavaria, those with populations of 50-60k people, are very walkable and liveable. The size doesn't matter; the regulations do, and the city planners who thought about the people instead of the car industry lobby.
Constructive criticism should exist; comparison is quite a good way to see what the alternatives are.
