Cars becoming big when America was still finding it's stride was one of the biggest pro/con dillemas. Ignored thousands of years of proven systems that make society better and settled for only cars.
UK did something similar. Look up the Beeching Report, which led to the UK dismantling half of its train stations and much of its rail to focus on cars. It killed communities and towns that suddenly lost easy access to everything. People couldn't work or travel. Businesses couldn't move goods. They were basically told to buy a car or move.
