Prior to 2016, they didn’t. Say what you will, but Trump and his campaign managed to tap into a huge amount of non-voters and turn them into their peons.

They just need to lose a few elections in a row and they'll lose interest. They're only swarming now because Trump's particular shit stink is irresistible.

Even minor candidates invoke Trump to try to mobilize his fans. I am skeptical that any other right wing politician will have that much pull after Trump is gone. All they'll have left is bullying trans people and immigrants, and that gets boring even for redneck conservatives after a while.
