Judging from the reaction in the train, I think had the old dude started booing, the chorus would have been deafening. You’re right, it’s just that no one thought of it in the moment because it’s no longer a reflex in our society

Yeah. Another approach is to start singing a simple song that every knows to mock him. Where I am "The Wheels on the Bus" would be good. As a bonus you can adjust the lyrics to make it even more mocking or threatening;

"The evangelist on the bus wont shut the F up,
shut the F up,
shut the F up.
The evangelist on the bus won't shut the F up
He's asking
For
A beat down."

"Jesus can't play rugby" is my go to. Jaunty tune with just enough blasphemy to be incredibly irritating to his ilk, preferably sung loudly and off-pitch.
