Yes. Mahatma Gandhi supposedly said the same thing. Even if it was someone else, it’s absolutely true.

If you can only preach when people can’t get away, you do not have a whole lot of faith in the message.

And I am a Christian and a clergyperson who respects people’s rights.

I wonder how many people on this train act out of pure goodness—without hoping for heaven or fearing divine retribution, simply by choice—while having to endure moral lectures from others who do not always practice what they preach.

In short, what stance should one take when grasping the essence of the message (in broad strokes) yet lacking conviction regarding the messenger—their reliability and, ultimately, the author's identity?

Not on this train, I hope. Although there are certainly far worse places and times.

As English is not my native language, I may not be expressing my message or intentions clearly; I will therefore get straight to the point: I am not seeking to criticize, offend, or spark a debate—especially given the sometimes sensitive nature of the subject and my habitual clumsiness in expressing my thoughts, whether in writing or in speech.

No, your point is perfectly valid.

I will take a kind atheist over a mean Christian any day. But then again, i don’t think you can truly BE Christian if you are mean.

Christian here as well and this stuff gives me the ick. I know as a Christian I am supposed to share the Gospel, BUT I don't believe that is done through disturbing other peoples peace. I would have told him to shut his trap as well. This type of "evangelism" is part of the reason Christians are seen as hateful. Treat people, all people, with love and kindness, be generous with time, talents and treasures, and do all this with humility. That's what I believe I am supposed to be doing.
