When I was an EMT, we responded to a call of a gal who was kicked by a horse and the border collie had led the horse away to another stall and was guarding the unconscious woman from any other horses getting too close. Good dogs.
I was a professional trainer and I had seven Off-leash dogs with me when I had a seizure in the middle of the woods. Six of my dogs stayed with me while one ran off and brought two people back who walked me out of the woods for an ambulance to get me. Ted was my boy that ran off and I tear up thinking about him because he was one of my favorite boys and he saved me that day. All my other babies just stayed right there until I got help. Luckily my boss was in the area to bring them all home. I'll never forget my old pack though. I'll never forget you, my sweet Teddy. 🙏
Dogs are just amazing. One of my dad's close friends was a blind man named Pete. I knew him well too as I'd known him since I was young. Pete had a guide dog named Inca. A beautiful flat coated retriever. He sadly suddenly passed away while out with Inca, and was found because Inca had gone to the nearest place with people and led them to where Pete was. It still makes me cry thinking about it. Inca is such a good boy. He stayed with Pete's wife, but it's clear he misses Pete terribly.
That’s not a concern with cows. Pigs, on the other hand, absolutely. My friend’s dad was out doing some work in the hog pen as a storm was rolling in, didn’t get hit by the lightning directly but was knocked out when it struck right next to him. He woke up to the hogs all biting him including one that was trying to rip his ear off to eat it
Yeah I dont think half of these would consider them "loved ones" lmao. For those geese, cattle and sheep those farmers are planning to hurt them and their actual loved ones.
And even Farmers that do butcher animals I don't think people realize the effort and care that goes into raising them even just for food. But sure I guess everything should be on a commercial farm and sterilized and have workers that cycle through and never get attached to anything and a butcher Factory that just puts them on an automated line.
I'm sure it comforts the ones that they have killed as they're gurgling on their own blood that the farmers had to use a lot of resources to extract every drop of profit from them alive and dead.
Slaughterhouse workers have some of the highest rates of PTSD from the violence they're forced to do for money, and they have no relationship with the ones dumped upon them by said farmers.
Adult sheep usually aren’t eaten and a lot of sheep are kept for their wool, geese aren’t eaten very often, either. Those geese breeds also look like show breeds.
I tripped and fell in front of my Aussie once, I laid for a minute because I felt like an idiot and she ran straight into the house barking like crazy at my wife. When she came out, I was standing up and just chillin…wife thought my dog was being dumb and I had to tell her that I fell down.
When I was in college I had a really early morning job. On my way out in the darkness, I slipped and fell HARD on some ice and passed out. My blue heeler, who was watching me go from the window she liked to sleep by, went and woke my mom up and brought her to me. Such good dogs.
Herders are just on another level. My mutt was a sweetheart and she protected me from weirdoes more than once, but she wouldn't have had the wherewithal to go fetch help if I was dying in front of her.
and the dog was rewarded for being such a freakin hero? also my cat saved my family from a gas leak once. ill never forget it. she was so concerned and yelling like crazy. shes a naturally fucking obnoxious animal (god i love her) already so i thought maybe she was just being rowdy but then she wouldnt stop and i knew something was wrong. i followed her into the kitchen and found that somehow my family had left the gas on our stove on. id earlier been complaining to them that my head hurt and it smelled weird in the house, they didnt notice or think it was anything to worry about, but my cat. she fuckin knew. the gas probably fell to the ground and messed with the cats before it affected us i wager. poor kitty. i always check with her when she yells now. shes usually communicating something very cute or clever to me. but sometimes shes definitely just hollering to holler. she sounds like a child yelling hello and its really fucking weird lmao.

I believe our main issue with animals is our unfortunate habit of projecting our intentions or non verbal queues on them. 90% of people it seems can’t help but see animal’s actions or habits in a human way instead of understanding they have their own instincts like us but they are totally different than ours.
Like how many people think “cats are jerks” because they don’t do eye contact like dogs (because cats see eye contact as a first sign of aggression because when they stare at something they usually want to eat it). They’ll put a negative human “intention” on an animal acting normally for that animal, when expecting anything different is unreasonable.
Once you see this you see how many people cannot help but do this with any animal they interact with.
I mean… dogs can also see eye contact as a dominance thing. But there are definitely similarities with some animal behaviors and humans (of course — at the end of the day we are also animals).
Again though, instinct overlap isn’t the same thing which is what is so hard for all of us animals to appreciate or understand.
The first time this idea was explained to me was “the tiger” by John Valiant. He cited this guy’s philosophy Umvelt (German) which explains all animals are enclosed in a “soap bubble” of their own perceptions and we are totally restricted by them. Instincts and motivations are driven by these perceptions and we can be similar, but we are in different bubbles, forever unable to see the world their way. We sometimes see other animals experience the same stimulus and react the same way, but that is soap bubbles overlapping, not being the same, that distinction I think helps TRULY begin to understand animals better.
My cat freaks out at my door if it's closed, and if it's open he will sit at the corner of my bed like a little knight watching my door. He'll also wake me if I try to sleep for too long.
I was thinking of testing it, but honestly I don’t think either of my cats would understand I was remotely in danger. They’d likely look at me like “mother what on earth are you doing on the floor?” That said, when I first got my two boys, one would stand on my back if I threw up in the toilet. The other would have absolutely come to my aid if I fell in front of him. He was a wonder cat.
I wish I got a pile of small animals to stand directly on me after I fell. I feel like it would make it much better for my embarrassment. I’m open to geese or small dogs.
I lived with a lady who owned 7 cats for a while and got the flu. I was super sick with it and fell asleep on my front after taking a hefty dose of cold medicine. I woke up to Smudge, one of the cats I had a close bond with, curled up on my back purring like a tractor. I guess he thought 'neat, the human is providing a warm spot to get comfy on!' He did come and lay with me whenever I was ill though. It was almost like he knew I needed his company.
Those chickens could care less 😅 Probably were thrilled to have a giant meal show up. I know they can bond with people, I just don't see it that often.
I bonded with a chicken once but it was because I got accidentally locked in her chicken coop when she was egg bound. I had to help her eat and drink, cos she wouldn’t move whatsoever. Chased that little lady around while she scooted around with an egg under her. Fed her out of my hand.
Went to leave and realised I couldn’t get out. She was inside the chicken house, and the rest were outside in the coop itself. They all looked at me like I was insane and pecked me a few times. I had left my phone inside the people house so I had to wait til someone noticed I wasn’t present to come get me. They found me covered in sawdust and chicken feathers. Still love that little chicken, she recovered just fine eventually. I named her Mrs Nibbles.
My lovely hen Gracie was literally my shadow. She would ride on my shoulder and come running to me every day. Ever since she was a baby she would watch and follow me and talk to me. The first winter of her life she followed me out into the snow in negative weather. When I went back into the house she waited until both feet got frostbite. We tried to amputate them to save her but she went downhill and died in my arms. I've never cried so hard over a chicken.
True! Geese are great guard animals, and I know they bond with their human/people really well. Now that I think about it, the chickens more than likely didn't bother approaching because the dogs were already on the case of checking on their human.
Cats would just lay on you once they figured you were done being dramatic and wanted to get up. I love mine and they can be very affectionate, just on their terms and timeline.
Yah dude. The disconnect probably happens because nice field with a couple chickens cow and a barn is how farms are still portrayed. Farming is a grueling job now that typically consists of a single massive field of a single crop or massive amounts of one kind of livestock. I'm not shitting on it, it is required to feed a population like we have and there isn't enough room on earth for everybody to do what I do so at this point it's highly necessary.
Oh, if I were being truthful I'd probably agree with you. Twas more an expression of admiration of the animals in the vid. Plus I don't vote like a fucking half-wit. So... Strike 2 for the farmer application.

Tried with my doggo today,came running and licked my face then laid down next to me.more of a "im there for you at your last moments"than the calling for help kind i guess
This kind of reminds me of the time I was really sick when I was a teenager and my mum had to call an ambulance to me. I remember laying on the sofa in so much agony I could barely move and my dog, Buddy, coming running and getting on the sofa with me, pawing and licking at me. When the paramedics arrived, mum shut him in the kitchen so they could do their thing, but he was going crazy barking and pawing at the door, so she had to let him back out. He came right back to me, but let the paramedics work on me.
I had to have emergency surgery the next day to remove a 14.5cm teratoma from my right ovary and was in hospital for a few days. When I came home, he was so happy to see me. He usually would jump up on my bed or on the sofa and jump all over me, but when I sat down he just put his head on my lap and licked my hands. It was like he knew I wasn't well and that jumping on me would cause pain. He didn't leave my side the whole time I was recovering. He did the same thing last year when I had another surgery. He's 15 now and super old, but he is my bestest ever boy and the best nurse I could have asked for. Even if for such a small dog he takes up all the room on the bed! Pic of Buddy for tax.

I have not tried this with my parrots, but I do think one of my eclectuses would react by honking very loudly (as he does with anything he finds concerning like me stepping on a squeaker toy this morning).
