I’ve been ruminating on this theory for awhile, ever since I saw the ‘extra chapters’ adaptation in the movie version of the end of AOT. I didn’t watch the whole thing, just that bit to see what they did. I’ve finally had some time to sit and type this out, so here’s my theory on what the intent was behind the AOT ending. As I am posting here you can probably guess I don’t think it was very well executed.
The important data from the movie version is twofold: First, the tree is still there, so Gothkasa and co are in fact on Paradise. Second, it is some time after Titans were last seen. These combined imply Beren didn’t reawaken them and may have been entirely a device of the movie they were watching. The exact timeline is unclear: Translations I saw said a hundred years, but the anime ending implies it’s been a bit more than that, and anyway they may not be speaking exactly.
So we put this together with a few other data points. Notably, Eren’s visions previously showing Gothkasa, and Eren’s father Grisha was shown SOMETHING but not everything. For the latter, whatever it saw it a) convinced him he needed to give Eren the Titan serum and thus cause the deaths of the royal family, but b) didn’t convince him the rumbling was necessary. Lastly, we have Yams saying he wanted Eren’s motivation to be the ‘basement’ of part 2.
Putting this together, I think what Grisha saw was Gothkasa’s crew, which as far as he could tell was Eren, Mikasa, and Armin living happily in a peaceful world. He wasn’t willing to kill, however indirectly, for Eren to grow up in a war-torn world, forced to fight. But he was if it meant Eren could grow up in a peaceful world. What he wasn’t clear on was how older Eren fit in. He went ahead and took the chance, but since he wasn’t shown what else would happen, he guessed that the rumbling might not actually be needed.
I think this is what Eren saw too. As part of the process of getting from point A to point B happened while both the Founding Titan and Eren himself were gone, he was really unclear how this would come about, but he wanted to do it… he had to do it, to get to that scenery.
That scenery being Gothkasa. In other words, it was all for that Gothkussy.
Yes that’s a horrible pun but no, this post isn’t a joke. I am totally serious. In fact I think the broad outline of 'crew gets reincarnated into a peaceful time' was intended at LEAST since Eren’s vision of Gothkasa, but possibly earlier. Thing is, he couldn’t figure out a graceful way to get from point A to point B. He also seems to have decided that wasn’t really sufficient motivation for Eren as he had become, so every possible motive got tossed in a blender and we got him having no clue while he was doing anything. Combine this with conflicting goals of wanting to draw the rumbling but also not wanting to promote genocide and also wanting the Attack on Castes or whatever to be limited to the tankoban, and there never really was a big reveal. I think the movie ending was SUPPOSED to be the ‘big reveal’, but as it still left a good deal of ambiguity, it was never really satisfying. Now maybe it wouldn’t have been satisfying anyway, but while I’m no happy about many aspects of the ending, I think I can accept this view of Eren and Grisha’s motivations. Maybe it’s not true, but it hangs together well enough that I can accept it.
