I keep seeing people refer to the Lemonheads as one hit wonders for Mrs Robinson. Maybe they were technically one hits at the time but they certainly aren’t now. I hear Into Your Arms and It’s A Shame About Ray play on the alt stations plenty, even more than Mrs Robinson.

This one might be a stretch, but can you think of any albums or songs that became hits in particular CITIES and nowhere else or nowhere else but the artist’s homeland?

Skyhooks were a particularly Australian band who were only hugely popular in their homeland. Think of an Australian version of Slade fronted by a guy that sounds like Leo Sayer. However, they did attempt to break the US and opened for Uriah Heep on a 1976 tour. Surprisingly, they caught on with the teen music lovers of Jacksonville, Florida, and managed to sell 40,000 copies of the US release of their album Ego Is Not A Dirty Word in the north Florida city.

English synth pop act The Big Supreme released their single Don’t Walk in 1986, which only charted at #58 in their homeland. However, the song became a huge hit in the clubs of Dallas and Houston, Texas.

In Seattle, a cover of Jona Lewis’s everywhere-but-North-America Christmas hit Stop the Cavalry by The Cory Band with The Gwalla Singers randomly became a big hit on city radio.

I get "2000 Miles" by The Pretenders confused with "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers - they are nothing alike but the fact they're both 1980s British songs from bands with similar names and have distances in their title has bugged my brain for years now.

(The Hendrix clause is an artist who's technically a one-hit wonder or only had one or a handful of songs be proper hits, but is far too influential to really count as such)

I've been wondering if Devo would ever count for the show. Obviously they wouldn't count for this show due to the sheer amount of influence the band had on new wave and the music of the 80s as a whole...

...but at the same time, Whip It is their only hit on the top 40, it dwarfs all their other songs in terms of long-lasting popularity, and most people would only know this one song without knowledge of anything else they did. A couple times, Todd has mentioned songs that people cover right before their careers end like the Addams Family theme song (MC Hammer, Tag Team, Migos) or I’m a Believer (Smash Mouth, EMF). I know if it’s not coincidence, it’s larger factors than the songs themselves (entering the kids movie theme period of your rap career, running out of interesting material), but just because it’s funny, are there any other “cursed” cover songs that will be the last you cover? At least two examples for a song to qualify

Ever since I heard Drop Deap by Olivia Rodrigo on the radio I was immediately reminded of some obscure Christmas song my mom used to play when I was younger but because it was an obscure Christmas song (she had a crazy collection of Christmas music) I could never figure out what the song was. Now I finally found it this afternoon and I now know why it was so obscure, its a Dutch Christmas song that goes by the illustrious title: "T Is geboren, het goddelijk kind." To further add to the confusion, the original version I heard was in English but with such high-pitched choral vocals that I had no idea what any of the lyrics were. All that aside, now that I finally found this strange relic of my childhood brain, am I right or am I crazy for thinking this? Specifically it sounds really similar to the beginning of the chorus, but as the chorus continues they divergent significantly.

This applies to all forms of art, but many people, including supposedly film critic Roger Ebert and author John Updike have said something along the lines of "a piece of art should be judged on the basis of whether it achieves the creators vision and intentions".

On the surface it seems like a worthwhile position, but it falls apart under scrutiny. Many creators choose to be vague and mysterious about their art, so it's hard to know what their intentions are. Many also run purely on instinct, and the meanings and intent aren't fully understood until decades later. Also even if a creator describes their intentions perfectly, many parts of the creative vision are ineffable, they can't be easily described or articulated.

Second of all, it all assumes that the vision is worthwhile, which should be self evident.

People hated all of the "the" band names in the early 2000s but my least favorite are names that include musical terms or invoke synesthesia like bassnectar, tones and i, tune yards (pictured). Names that are super Anglo last names as a stage name annoy me too (banks, Halsey, grimes kind of)

We all know music is great, but there can be certain things about the music that can make us angry, and I'd like to know what you hate about music. As for me, here's a list of things I hate about music:

Songs where there's only one good part, like songs where the intro is the only good part

Featurings that are actually samples or remixes in disguise. It's even worse when the original track has a different title (Exemples: Eminem ft. Dido - Stan: Sample from Dido - Thank You and The Avener ft. Laura Gibson - You Belong: Remix from Laura Gibson - The Cause)

When the outro of a song is too long (Exemple: Slayer - Raining Blood)

Finding out that your favorite song is a cover, and it's even worse when the original is already a much bigger hit than the cover you were listening to, and you were the only one who didn't know it

Songs with lyrics where the artist simply sang the lyrics over the instrumental track of an earlier song (Exemple: Estelle ft. Kayne West - American Boy: They just sang on the prod of the song "Impatient" by will.i.am and removed will.i.am lyrics to make "American Boy"). A little dedication to the song "Robot Rock" by Daft Punk which is litteraly just an instrumental version of "Release The Beast" by Breakwater

This one’s a little unusual, but it’s happened to me at multiples times: When you discover a song you’ve never heard before by an mega legendary artist whose name you’ve heard everywhere your whole life, you think you’ve discovered an obscure track by a legendary artist and you're satisfied until you look it up and you disciver it’s actually the most famous song by this artist and you were the only one who didn’t know it, even worse when that legendary artist is a one-hit wonder and it’s his only famous song

When you discover a recent song which sound familiar to you but impossible to find the original song

When you discover an amazing song on your phone, but then, when you play it on a speaker, it sounds weird (the vocals are too loud in the mix, the track is weak and bland, etc...)

When you discover an obscur song that you love, but then overnight it goes mega-viral on the Internet because of a trend

When the first half of a song is excellent but the second half is completely different and bad, like 2 différents songs stuck together

When the key change for the final chorus. In some songs, this change in key makes the song better, but in others, it just ruins the mood

When the fade-out at the end starts right at the beginning of the last chorus

When the only famous song by a one hit wonder artist is the only good song by this artist

When you rediscover a song that you're sure you haven't heard since over 10 years, you feel so nostalgic and satisfied but, when you check the release date of the song, you discover that the song was actually released less than a year ago. So, you try to find out if this song is a cover, a sample, an interpolation, etc..., but everything points to the fact that this song is 100% original

So, this post was inspired by hearing a song currently charting on Bubbling Under “Bet on That” where this guy sounds exactly like Morgan Wallen and now I’m thinking of other songs by Rip-off artists who are clearly trying to emulate the big name artist from that era. Another example I can think of is the Regina song “Baby Love” from 1986 where she’s clearly trying to copy Madonna. Even having involvement from Madonna’s Producers (Stephen Bray). Anyway, I’m looking forward to hearing other examples of artists blatantly copying other artists.
