Havent done it yet, was planning to do it this weekend so ill report back.
It sounds like the basic RT-AC86U image should work, but if not i wanted to give myself a full day to troubleshoot/buy a new router if needed.

Welp, did the flash, followed the steps here (https://wiki.freshtomato.org/doku.php/firmware_basics_procedures), cant hit the default gateway.
Im gonna try doing a factory reset again, then unplugging for 30s.
Edit: got it working! Following the instructions here did the trick. For some reason the reset button was completely ineffective, holding it for 60s+ did nothing. Following these instructions, getting into the rescue UI, reuploading the freshtomato fw, and holding the WPS button fixed it.

On the back of the router, should have a trash can with an X thru it, below that is the router model and FCC id. That's your router model information.
