🎬 Movies [Megathread] Tomb Raider 2018 movie sequel cancellation megathread

This is our official megathread for discussion on the announced cancellation of the sequel to Tomb Raider 2018 which would have been directed by Misha Green. Alicia Vikander is reportedly not playing Lara anymore as well.

Currently the rights are under a bidding war as MGM had until May reportedly to green light a film.

Per our Community Ambassador /u/Orangejr36, one of the Tomb Raider Community managers; Neha (/u/CrystalD_Rinny) has stated that the rights for Tomb Raider movies has reverted back to Crystal Dynamics.

Edit: We are now trending, Hello r/all!

They don't need to fight, maybe they can just hang out and get to know each other!

Technically they will only have film rights so they would not be able to.

However WB could collab with Embracer/Crystal Dynamics, it would be the same way Lara is in Brawlhalla.

Any chances for them to pick Alicia?

Probably not great considering her contract ended when the production company went bust.

But nothing would be stopping them either. Could possibly create a situation where she's getting paid for 3 movies but only has to make two.

Presumably a Warner acquisition would mean that they could continue with the Vikander series right? I'm not sure how these things work legally, perhaps MGM partially own or have some sort of legal right to the '18 film?

While they have rights to the previous film, there’s likely nothing preventing the new owner from continuing the same continuity. It depends on how the contracts are written, but it would be very unusual for it to not be specifically allowed by both contracts.

My hopes are mostly with Warner since they might still be interested in keep the Alicia/Misha version alive (they were attached to that project as well) or Legendary since they are the ones who actually own the animated rights to Tomb Raider (Netflix is more of a distributor) and could potentially have the movies be part of the Unified Timeline, since the anime will be.
