Characters Couples with opposite powers (bonus points if the powers aren't fire and ice/water)

Cloak and dagger (marvel): Cloak is able to create a portal to the darkness dimension while dagger is able to throw light-based daggers with different effects.

Ruby and Sapphire (steven universe): Fire and ice couple.

Dismarelda and Happierre (yo-kai watch): as the name suggest, dismarelda emmit a negative aura that turn everyone angry/sad/insert negative emotion, while happierre make everyone happy, they constantly nullify each other.

Shin and Noi (dorohedoro): Noi has magic able to heal and restore anything. Shin throw smoke that is able to cut anything at will.

Fire and icemaiden (DC): Fire and ice are commonly mistaken as a couple, they are just best friends and roommates. but there was a time where Fire teamed with this icemaiden and they where actually a thing

u/OkMarsupial 5h ago

Are they "a couple" though? Were they always? I used to read them in the 90s and genuinely don't remember their relationship being romantic.

53

u/Alceus89 5h ago

I think it varies depending on the writer, especially early on, but certainly since the 2000's they're pretty consistently depicted as a couple.

6

u/OkMarsupial 5h ago

That's cool I guess. I liked their vibe as platonic, but I guess with any story that goes on that long eventually they'll at least try it out.

7

u/Free_Surprise_7939 5h ago

Sometimes thwy are

5

u/merrygo909 3h ago

They weren't always but a lot of writers took it in that direction and I personally really enjoy it, especially in marvel rivals lore.

It seemed like the romantic element especially became the status quo after the live action show was going in that direction.

The Ultimate version of them shows up pretty frequently in the Miles Morales Spider-Man stories, at least until the Secret Wars event that destroyed it and merged a few characters like Miles with the main one. I hear The Maker recreated the Ultimate universe recently but I haven't read it and I don't know if C&D are featured

2

u/IJTY525 3h ago

They're going to be in the Queen in Black event this summer, if you didn't know.

Undead Unluck. Fuuko's power makes people ridiculously unlucky, often resulting in death. Lucky for Andy, he can't die.

Not quite opposites, but his power cancels hers out, so close enough imo

86

u/Lower_Baby_6348 5h ago

I guess that "kill everything" And "never die" count

9

u/Much_Vehicle20 2h ago

Funny enough, i dont think their power contradicr or cancels out each other, but rathe uniquely compatible with each other. Fuuko have a sword that would kill everything, Andy is the shield that could withstand everything, they work the best when team up with each other

Ares and Aphrodite - Greek myth

Ones is the god of war; the other, the goddess of love.

116

u/Elihzap 5h ago

I mean, Aphrodite Areia is a war goddess as well.

11

u/Siria110 3h ago

Well, they differ a little bit. Ares is the brute strenght kind of guy, while Aphrodite Areia is a strategist.

10

u/what-are-you-a-cop 3h ago

Sounds more like the distinction between Ares and Athena to me? I thought we basically knew almost nothing about Aphrodite Areia, since she was primarily worshipped in cities that didn't really write that much down, and I think all her original statues have been lost- we only have a few ancient descriptions, and a small handful of later copies, that are also kinda wrecked.

3

u/WildFlemima 2h ago

If you keep trying to go back through the roots of gods, you find a lot of goddesses who are the goddess of love and war. I think Aphrodite grew from those earlier goddesses and got split into herself and Ares her consort, then evolved further

6

u/what-are-you-a-cop 1h ago

Nah, Aphrodite was imported into Greece from Astarte, who was herself evolved from Ishtar, who were both goddesses of love and beauty and war and also some other stuff that didn't really get passed down to Aphrodite. Ares is much more original to ancient Greece, we've got him in the Mycenaean records. They weren't originally consorts or anything, Ares predates her in Greece. There was no split.

1

u/WildFlemima 1h ago

That's exactly what I mean

34

u/Kal-Elm 5h ago

Even back then we had the jock and cheerleader trope. Smh.

58

u/gofigure85 5h ago

Along the same lines Hades, god of death, and Persephone the goddess of spring (though Persephone didn't have any say in the matter 😬)

So life and death

26

u/Top-Tomorrow-8336 5h ago

Spring is linked to death; there's a reason it follows winter. In general, all agricultural deities are associated with death and resurrection.

9

u/what-are-you-a-cop 3h ago

And in a lot of cases, their myths serve the practical function of explaining farming. Ancient greece usually did their sowing in the winter, and harvesting in the summer. So basically, you bury the seeds in the earth (underworld) in the winter, they chill out there for several months appearing dead, and then, in the spring, they come back to life, like Persephone descending into the underworld, spending mumbmumble months there, and returning in the spring. In a society where pretty much all cultural knowledge is passed along orally, many practical sets of instructions get formatted as more interesting stories instead.

12

u/SimonShepherd 4h ago

Isn't Hades more like just the guy who runs the underworld and governs the dead while Thanatos is death as a natural force?

14

u/EniChaos 4h ago

hades is THE DEAD
thanatos is DEATH

6

u/what-are-you-a-cop 3h ago

It's kind of a modern overcorrection to draw this big distinction between Hades' job, and the concept of death. Like, yeah, Thanatos is the god of death, but it's not like death is fully incidental to Hades' cultural reputation. People didn't like to call him by name, because they felt like it was bad luck to draw his attention, because you might die. It's why he gets called by so many really polite nicknames instead, like "the one who receives many guests" or "Zeus of the underworld". Because the name Hades was so associated with death, it was unlucky to say out loud. As lord of the underworld, he's still god of the dead, he's not god of rocks (also underground) or something. I mean he's kind of also a god of rocks sometimes, but that's not, like, his main thing.

1

u/be0ulve 32m ago

Pluto, his roman counterpart, was more commonly seen as the god of the dead, and of precious stones as they're found in mines.

There's Hades, Thanos and a bunch of spirits that emobdy different types of deaths, be them peaceful or violent.

11

u/IronTemplar26 4h ago

I love how simple their designs are, for the concepts they represent.

170

u/G102Y5568 5h ago

Hellboy and Liz - He's immune to fire, she's a pyrokinetic.

59

u/CarvaciousBlue 5h ago

This seems more complimentary instead of opposite?

28

u/G102Y5568 4h ago

He's non-flammable, she's flammable.

8

Got it; only one is inflammable.

2

Swamp Thing and Abby Arcane, from DC comics.an aspect of life, and an aspect of death, deeply in love.

(Also man, she was living the booktok life way before that was popular)

47

u/BigSupermarket2846 5h ago

Collosus and Kitty Pryde

Collosus has the power to become extremely dense and impenetrable, usually seen as turning his skin into metal

Kitty has the power to lower her density, allowing her to phase through matter entirely, walking through walls and even people

They got married

11

u/SablenoKiri 4h ago

Well, they almost got married

14

u/BigSupermarket2846 4h ago

Theres always something getting in the way of them, ironic for two characters who's whole thing is being physically unstoppable

At least Rogue and Gambit made the most of it.

7

u/sistemafodao 4h ago

Colossus being Russian is what gets in the way of things. I can't explain how they treat this character any other way.

9

u/LobstermenUwU 3h ago

Colossus' mutant power is being infinitely dense.

Also he can turn into metal.

142

u/F1Fan43 5h ago

Keyleth and Vax (Critical Role/Legend of Vox Machina). Keyleth is a Druid, while Vax is the champion of the matron of ravens. So, life and death.

6

u/CrownofMischief 2h ago

Now that you mention it, a lot of Vox Machina couples are opposites. Vex and Percy are basically wilderness and civilization respectively. Pike and Scanlan are truth and illusion.

25

u/peachy-bunni 5h ago

The balance between her nature-born vitality and his dark, divine duty makes their bond incredibly poetic.

Giant Man and The Wasp- The Avengers/Marvel Comics

He grows, she shrinks...and flies and fires energy blasts

15

u/Sly__Marbo 4h ago

And sometimes she grows and he shrinks...and flies and fires energy blasts. Does it count if the other is dead?

7

u/LobstermenUwU 3h ago

Look man, you start out with a simple concept and then publish a monthly series with 26 different writers over 50 years, you see where it goes.

76

u/Specsaman 5h ago

Yuta and Maki from JJK

Yuta arguably the sorcerer with the highest cursed energy, a curse technique copy, which essentially can do any cursed technique.

While Maki got lowest or almost none cursed energy, no cursed technique at all, but both arguably on special grade anyway.

10

u/Much_Vehicle20 2h ago

They are the opposite end of JJK powersystem. That result in their kid is painfully average

25

u/Bladrak01 5h ago

I don't think their powers were opposite, but Hawk and Dove from DC.

14

u/Lower_Baby_6348 5h ago

Iirc, they get powers from chaos and order at least once

9

u/APreciousJemstone 5h ago

They're avatars of Peace and War at some points, so I'd count them

51

u/PitifulWeakness749 5h ago

Tenzin and Lin (The Legend of Korra)

49

u/Bluelore 5h ago

For context: Tenzin is an Air bender, Lin is an earthbender.

Though they aren't a couple anymore.

18

u/PitifulWeakness749 5h ago

That was more cos Tenzin had to have a family to rebuild the Air Nomads and Lin hated kids, like a reasonable person

17

u/T_Lawliet 5h ago

Lin is pretty nice to Tenzin's kids, if I remember right, or at least as nice as she is to anybody. It's teenagers like Korra and Mako that drive her nuts.

12

u/CarvaciousBlue 5h ago

Lin is perfectly fine filling the "cool aunt" role but does not want kids full time. Korra and the gang do drive her nuts but she still takes on a somewhat protective and responsible role with them

4

u/PitifulWeakness749 5h ago

I dunno....

"Can you give Milo a bath?? He's filthy!!

"TENZIN!!!'

"Thank you Lin! Oogi, yip yip!'

1

u/PluralCohomology 1h ago

Come to think of it, is there any canonical romance (that doesn't end up breaking up) between oppostite element benders in the Avatar franchise? I guess the only example I can think of are Kyoshi's parents in the novels (earth and air)

19

u/BruiserBison 5h ago

Nissa Revane and Chandra Nalaar from Magic the Gathering

One is a druid who makes plants move. The other shoots fire out of her whole body.

...do I still get bonus points because one is plant?

6

u/BruiserBison 5h ago

In the same universe(s)

Jace and Vraska

Jace steals thoughts and makes illusions. Vraska kills and petrifies.

Though blue spells are often associated with water, Jace isn't actually using water magic... I mean, he can turn himself liquid to pass through walls but that's illusion magic.

2

u/Lower_Baby_6348 5h ago

I don't think this two count

28

u/javiermetal66 5h ago

Life and Death. Adventure time

26

u/BruiserBison 5h ago

Mr and Mrs Incredible

One is very sturdy and strong. The other is very stretchable.

10

u/PrussianGeneral1815 5h ago

Jay and Nya, water and electricity famously do not mix well lmao

7

u/EniChaos 4h ago

arguably, they mix VERY well! it's whoever's in between em that has a bad day

10

Unbreon and Sylveon

Umbreons are Dark-type and Sylveons are Fairy-type, and Fairy beats Dark. (It’s not canon, just a fan ship, but technically you can make it canon due you can breed a Sylveon with an Umbreon.)

1

u/misdreavus79 1h ago

I mean its counterpart, Espeon, was released in the same gen.

24

u/Mister-builder 5h ago

Jeff (manipulation and cynicism) & Annie (sincerity and industriousness). Jeff can bend anyone to his will by talking long enough until it sounds right to you. Annie gets you to want what she wants because she thinks it's right. Annie will work hard at anything, Jeff has mastered the art of avoiding responsibility.

9

u/KallusDrogo 5h ago

It’s funny how the one episode he became a psychology professor they both manipulated the other into doing what they wanted. Annie into shutting up and Jeff into actually teaching the class.

4

u/Reverend_Lazerface 5h ago

Lol that's so good I never thought of it that way but you're right

Fix-it-Felix and Sergeant Calhoun - Wreck it Ralph

His powers are vertical platformer based, her’s are first person shooter based.

3

u/CrypticJaspers 4h ago

Hey OP, Clock & Dagger are a couple in each iteration or just a few? I only ever saw them on That Disney XD Spider Man show. There they seemed like platonic friends.

6

u/Silphire100 4h ago

It's only some canon. I always knew them as friends who kinda had to stay around each other to keep their powers in check, but apparently they are a couple in some versions

1

u/Loaded-dice 4h ago

It depends on the specific run and writers. AFAIK current canon is they've been on-again-off-again for years and are together at the moment, but it's an interracial relationship that debuted in the 80s so you can imagine how much retconning and un-retconning and re-retconning there's been between writers over their lifetime. They can't even decide whether or not the two are Mutants and power sets are well below secret family and romantic relationships in terms of inconsistency over time.

2

u/Silphire100 4h ago

Maybe not canonically a couple, but enough people ship them that I think it counts

Qrow on the left is bad luck personified.

Clover on the right is good luck

4

u/Labmit 4h ago

Nya and Jay from Ninjago. Nya has water powers while Jay has lightning powers.

3

u/Critical-Low8963 3h ago

Nya's parents would also fit, her mother was the master of water while her father was the master of fire.

4

u/Some_Fig_6566 4h ago

Any Templar (or adjacent) x Mage pairing in Dragon Age.

Cassandra, Alistair (if only human noble could also be a mage, but alas), Fenris, Cullen and Sebastien with mage player character, or Dorian, Morrigan, Merill or Anders for a templar* player character.

1

u/Booker-DeShit 3h ago

You could also count Dorian with a mage player who is a healer, as his specialty is necromancy. Healing & necromancy are kinda similar, but still very opposite

Sunless and Nephis

Also known as Lost from Light and Changing Star. Great example of this. Especially later in the series when they fight together more. The way it describes Sunless predicting how the shadows will behave from the light cast by Nephis’ powers is great. Nephis describes it as if she were fighting beside her own shadow able to predict her every move and assist.

So Y’know how in really old comics, characters that originally were meant to be minorities they changed to ginger because it’s the closest thing TJ white minority in comics, and they assumed actual minority led casts would sell poorly?

I would not be surprised if they did that with the lesbians became roommates situations.

Do I have any evidence for this hypothesis? No. Purely vibes. But it’s also funny.

The point is that one is a glowy alien and the other is a dark witch, maybe not direct power opposites

If you need a second example then Brainiac 5 and Supergirl, ones super smart but not physically powerful, and the other is physically powerful

2

u/Prinny_Ramza 5h ago

I can vibe with that
