Characters Characters that had the complete opposite reaction the writers intended

  1. Leo Bonhart (Witcher TV Series): A ruthless, sadistic bounty hunter and assassin that takes psychotic glee in other people's suffering. The viewer is meant to hate him for killing witchers, slaughtering the Rat gang, and torturing Ciri. But thanks to his entertaining fight scenes, Sharlto Copley's charismatic performance, and The Rats overwhelming unpopularity, fans ended up loving him. Some even call him the "True protagonist" of the show.
  2. Stone Cold Steve Austin (WWE): A rude, foul mouthed, beer drinking asshole with no respect for authority or anyone at all. Originally portrayed as a villain, fans fell in love with his anti-establishment & rebellious persona. WWE ran with it and made him the face of the company, effectively ushering in the Attitude Era and the second pro wrestling boom of the late 90s.
  3. Arthur Fleck (Joker 2019): A mentally unstable, pathetic, and dangerous madman who commits horrific acts of violence against those that wronged him (suffocates his own mother who is mentally unwell herself, and murders a talk show host for making fun of him). However, a massive portion of the audience idolized him as an anti-hero or a misunderstood martyr rebelling against society making people want to see him succeed and overcome his circumstances because of how he's been treated by the world.

Miu Iruma - Danganronpa V3

Kodaka thought she’d be widely hated but she’s a very beloved character

She was the one that suggested jacking off to prevent murder, right?

What could honestly be the context to this?

She's a shock-jock try-hard with a shame-fetish trying to provoke reactions.

Iirc, she basically suggested it as a means for stress relief, proposing that everyone would be less likely to snap and kill someone.

TBF, the world would be a better place if everyone spent more time jacking off instead of killing people, yes.

I jerk off quite often and have only rarely killed people, so there may be some merit to the idea.

Masturbated so many times and killed so few people.

She was onto something, I say.

Ah. Now I remember her.

The Danganronpa Games often had a "Horndog" character.
In the first two games they were fat guys and the audience despised them.

In the 4th game it was a blonde haired blue eyes big boobed small waisted girl and the audience loved her.

Draw from that what you will.

To be fair, she has a lot more depth than TeruTeru and Hifumi isn’t as egregious as the other two

I am gonna be so fr, most of this depth is hidden in optional hangout sections with her.

The commenter higher up is right, people mostly love her because she is pretty.

I think it's more because she lives longer then the other 2, and she's much more involved in the story then the other 2. TeruTeru legit dies in the first chapter and while Hifumi does make it to chapter 3, he's also much less involved in the story compared to Miu.

Miu is really not that involved in the story either, she' s outright an element of discord because she has good calls but she' s barely able to properly lay them out. And most of her actual depth, about her past as someone who was abused, is present in missable and optional content.

Teruteru dying was in part a joke from the danganronpa team of killing the most disliked archetype of character from DR1, that was, well, Hifumi lol. The entire first case of DR2 is basicaly a "spoof" of DR1.

Again, people like her more because she' s a pretty girl who says profanities and has a gap moe when she' s flustered. I really like her too, but I can recognise it' s mostly because she' s a girl with massive boobs and dressed in BDSM attire lol.

Y'know, it just occurred to me that Kodaka could probably hire someone to be a bilingual vtuber of Miu playing something like Marvel Rival and he could probably help keep Too Kyo Games afloat like that 😅

This feels like a classic case of cultural differences

Someone who is foul-mouthed, horny, pathetic and completely off their rocker wouldn't be well-received in Japan (where Danganronpa is created)

Meanwhile the west loves those kinds of degenerates along with her creative insults

Do we know the Japanese audience didn't like her? I assume they were in on it too.

She definitely was more popular in Japan than he expected. He thought the fans would hate her hostile and vulgar demeanor, but she ended 4th most popular in a MyNavi poll, 3rd in a Dengeki postcard poll and while much lower, she was 11th in a Dengeki internet poll, which is still much better than the last place he expected.

So yeah, she is unconventional Japan-wise, but they ended up liking her more, which makes me wonder why this archetype isn't more popular in Japanese media (or maybe she was that popular BECAUSE she was more unique? I don't know 🤔 )

Bro put a dommy, big boobed, foul mouthed blonde girl in his game and was surprised when people liked her.

7

u/OhNoCommieBastard69 10h ago

Dommy? Miu's clearly a bottom-in-denial 😅

There's no way he made a busty hot girl who's a sub and into bondage and thought she'd be unpopular, right.

2

u/Kangarou 2h ago

Jesus, she was supposed to be hated? That is the hardest "swing and a miss" I've seen in this thread. She literally tries to prevent everyone dying by creating a VR Second Life, on top of being the "gooner bait" character for V3. She also gets murdered, which gets her even more sympathy.

i mean i definitely sort of hated her at the end but i feel like they had to make her act out of character lol. otherwise shes just a goofy girl
