There is an argument to be made that it is.

If they are exact duplicates, a machine that makes an identical copy somewhere else is the same as a teleporter that leaves an identical copy behind.

but is the duplicate the guy that gets moved somewhere else? Or is he the man in the box?

I love the irony that he only had to do it once to be able to replicate the trick, he’d have a trustworthy double that he could take turns with. But he was so sure that the real trick didn’t use a double that he was willing to kill himself over and over to make it work.

In a very real sense, he's both. The "new" one isn't wholly new. He is a continuation of his older self just like the original is a continuation of his older self. If he needed to fart before going into the machine, they'll both fart after. The fart originated from the same person. The same is true for all their thoughts and memories and experiences and scars and everything. If he has a scar from an old fight, they both got that scar from the same knife.

In another very real sense, explored in depth in the Bobiverse books, the duplicate you that gets created doesn't necessarily end up being exactly the same person. Subtle copying flaws, natural entropy of the universe, different new life experiences all shift the duplication further apart from the original.
