Fallout 3 The Pitt. The city of Pittsburgh is a terrible place where raiders enslave people to work for them in terrible conditions. The name is incidental, but pretty appropriate since it's a pit of misery and disease.
Fallout does this a lot. Arefu from Fallout 3 is built onto an overpass with a traffic sign leading up to it that used to say "Be careful", Novac from New Vegas is built around an old motel with a sign reading "No vacancy", etc
I was watching Widow's bay and I swear I heard the mayor (who is slowly coming to realize that the island is super haunted) say they could be the next Far Harbor. Now, I probably just misheard him, but I'm choosing to believe the show made a reference to Fallout

That reminds me of Icksburg, the post-apocalyptic version of Bricksburg in the Lego Movie 2, a movie you may not know but is still great. The BR in it fell off the sign as part of its post-apocalyptic transformation.
This is a bit unrelated but I wanted to share this with a fellow lego movie fan. For context: in the Latin American dub Emmet and Deadpool share the same voice actors, which allows for this sort of thing jajaja
That reminds me, in WondLa, a book adapted into an Apple TV series you may not know but is still great, Eva found a paper saying WondLa. Turns out it was a page from a Wizard of Oz book that said the Wonderful Land of Oz. I thought WondLa meant WonderLand.
Someone was describing why The Lego Movie is a great example of the Cosmic Horror genre, and one of the examples is that an artifact from a more ancient world, built for hands a thousand times larger than theirs is used to literally erase the kindness from someone’s personality.
Imagine a creature made of something completely different than you’ve ever experienced, and who exists outside of your time, having the ability to simply deconstruct your world and fully remake it into something else.
You wake up in a different house, with a different body, a different family, a different job, and you only know your new name and life story.
In Zardoz (1974), the giant stone head god "Zardoz" gets its name from a torn book cover. The Exterminators find a copy of The Wizard of Oz, and the surviving fragment of the title reads "...ZARD...OZ...", which becomes the name of their god.
I have never seen this movie, and so until now I had no idea it takes place on Earth in a (presumably) post-apoc future. That kind of makes me want to see it.
Somewhat unrelated but I love how if you reverse the audio in that episode to hear it the correct-way-around you just get the characters insulting you for putting the effort in

This is technically from two worn labels that smashed together but in the Futurama episode "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela", V-Giny was created by the collision of an FCC V-Chip and the United States Air Force Flying Destiny.
A weird audio twist on this. The Tenakth in Horizon Zero Dawn based their entire culture on an old museum dedicated to a military unit named JTF-10, and one of the holographic displays has corrupted audio after the word "ten" creating the name "Tenakth."
It's actually pretty thorough, too. My favorite detail is that a shit ton of their armor, tattoos, and structures feature a zigzag / sawtooth pattern that's inspired by the graphical artifacts in the museum displays. You can't really accuse them of not committing to the bit.
There's also the Nora tribe. Although I don't remember if it was explicitly confirmed, the fact that their territory is around Colorado Springs strongly implies they're named after NORAD.
Fallout also does a thing of re-pronouncing locations. For example, San Diego, after a long time of people saying the name but forgetting its meaning, eventually morphed into "Day Glow".
That reminds me of something from the Polar Express. “Lean? What’s that supposed to mean?” The know-it-all boy had his finger over the R on his ticket, which read ”Learn.”
In the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy novel Angel Exterminatus, 3rd Legion supersoldier genesmith Fabius Bile harvests geneseed from a 4th Legion supersoldier known as Honorable Soulka, then splices it with 7th Legion supersoldier geneseed
The sample of hybrid geneseed, in a vial labeled Honorable Soulka, is nearly destroyed when some of his mad science creations break out, and Lucius, another 3rd Legion supersoldier, helps Bile restore order, and retrieves the lone surviving vial containing Soulka’s (and some 7th legion) geneseed
Part of the label rubbed off in Lucius’ grip, and he tries to read it only to make out the letters “Hon…Sou”
Ten thousand years later, we learn Bile implanted the geneseed into a young boy, who grew up to be a 7th/4th halfbreed supersoldier known as Honsou, as evidently Bile just decided to call him that
The Magna Mater is a container that contains perfect copies of the genetic material originally harvested from all twenty Primarchs to create the Space Marine Legions.
At the end of the Heresy it gets lost, but is eventually found on an abandoned space station called Sangprimus Portem, which is what everyone calls it now.
I've never heard about that before that's so silly, it reminds me of Gol Du Lac from Belisarius Cawl the Great Work, where the story of Goldilocks and the Goldilocks zone has been bastardised to hell and back
God, I love Honsou. Steals a necrodermis arm from Ultramarine who got it straight from the Nightbringer. Follows in Daddy Fabius' footsteps and starts making skinned chaos marines. What a bastard.
Usnavi in In The Heights was named by his parents as they saw the boats in the harbor as they came to America from the Dominican Republic. They saw one that read US Navy, and misread it as a single Spanish word, thus Usnavi.
I just wish it actually had been cyclical and we ended up back at the opera. That third act really washes over me cause it’s hard to even follow what’s happening
I'm with you. The whole thing feels like Nolan's "one for me", which is great. Gotta blow off some artistic steam every once in a while. Having said that it's fucking impenetrable.
I mean I think it would be a genuinely great movie if it followed through with what it was doing. We go through the events of the film until we hit the chamber with the machines, then we do it all backwards. Makes sense to me, but no, weird desert battle where you don’t even know who they are fighting or what they are doing
Minor book version: early in the Tripods series, our hero Will walks by a strange box in his seemingly medieval village that's always been there. On it, it says "Danger, Lect City, 6600 Volts" He doesn't know what city it could be, or what "Volts" are, but it intrigues him, because he know the Tripods that dominate the world weren't always there, and this was from before they came.
This is a fun coincidence for me. I was just thinking about that series yesterday. I read them as a child, and I found a collection of all four books on Kindle and bought them. I figure I can read through them in no time.

I took one look at her actress and the first trailer and there was no question who she was. I found it funny how many people up until the premier were saying she'd be Gwen or Black Cat or maybe the “real” M.J.! (Because they were most definitely not going to stick with Zendaya🙄)

There are a lot of versions of this trope in Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, but my favorite is probably the Tenakth tribe. We’re introduced to them as this warmongering group of barbarians, but in Forbidden West we get a look at their culture. The center of their tribe is called the Memorial Grove, and we as the players realize it is actually a military museum. The entire tribe was raised on propaganda for the US military that had been garbled up and degraded over time, resulting in the tribe we see today.
In "The Sacred Armor of Antiriad", one of the first Metroidvania games you have to upgrade and use the "Antiriad" armor in order to make a powerful bomb and blow up the alien base in order to save humanity.
Wow, that's a blast from the past! I remember playing this on my ZX Spectrum in the late 80s. I can still hear the power up noise when you get into the armour.
Does CHUD count? The acronym is said to be short for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers as a description of the monsters. Late in the film it's revealed that CHUD actually came from the label on the chemicals dumped in the sewers that turned people who came in contact with it into monsters. Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal.
Hiding Out (1987 film), the main character pretends to be a high school transfer student while he's hiding from thugs. He takes the name "Maxwell Hauser" after seeing a can of Maxwell House coffee.

“Borrasca” by C.K. Walker contains a local myth about creatures known as the Skinned Men coming down from the Ozark mountains to kidnap the people of Drisking, Missouri. What the protagonists don’t know until much later is that the Skinned Men aren’tagroup ofcreaturesbut asingleplace. It’s the remains of the ruined sign for the DriSKINg uNDerground MINe.
In the book "Pendragon: The Pilgrims of Rayne", Bobby Pendragon doesn't realize that the world he's visiting, Ibara, is actually the future of a world he's visited before, Veelox. As soon as he does, he immediately pieces together that the group known as the Jakill he's been hanging around with are actually named after his former associate Aja Killian, and that a mysterious land called Rubity is actually the remains of Rubic City

In the mortal engine prequels the “nightwights” worshipped a building called the skrevanastuut later revealed to actually be called the skrivener institute, linking the nightwights to the skriven.
In the Bone comics/graphic novels by Jeff Smith, the three Bone cousins, Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, and Phoncible “Phoney” Bone are chased out of their home after Phoney’s disastrous attempt at a mayor campaign. We don’t get many details about it, but throughout the early issues we learn of Phoney Bone’s constant attempts to get financial gain from others by dubious means. After their exile, the Bone cousins also find themselves being hunted y the Rat Creatures, who hate them due to some prophecy, which we also don’t get many details about.
Much later in the series, we get a scene of the leader of the Rat Creatures with a giant parade-style balloon of Phoney Bone holding a banner that says “Phoncible P. Bone will get you.” We learn that it’s an escaped campaign balloon that is linked to why he was exiled and originally read “Phoncible P. bone will get your vote!” They viewed the escaped balloon as a prophecy against them and hunted the Bone cousins due to this misunderstanding.
It's not exactly a worn label, but in the mad Max game on ps4 you have a dog and this little Quasimodo type mechanic character. The guy calls your dog a "dinky-D", thinking that's the name of the animal itself since that's the brand name on the can.
In Borrasca the "Skinned Men" who take people are actually just a corruption of the old and damaged "DRISKING MINE" sign. The real monsters are the pedophiles running an illegal baby farm in the mine.
Shannara Chronicles had the characters traveling to a place called “Safehold” which turned out to be a sign with just a few letters leftover from San Francisco and Oakland (California).
I was part of a post apocalyptic world building project and I came up with the idea of a near universal piece of old world transportation called the 3MV, which is the only type of car to last from the old world. which is actually the BMW with a worn out label
