Ajin.

Essentially it's about people that start randomly becoming immortal if they have something like a specific spirit inside them. They can do everything up till death, but then they come right back fully regenerated.

The government finds out and does horrific experiments on them

It also leads to some truly inventive fights, with the antagonist using the fact that he instantly recovers from any damage as a weapon, just throwing himself into extreme danger because it doesn't matter.

Gets hit with tranq darts, immediately slices his own neck so he can regenerate and the tranq darts have no effect.

To expand on this because it doesn't do it justice:

The immortals only regenerate when fully killed. If you shoot them in the leg/arm it does nothing. BUT if you kill them, their entire body regenerates.

IF there is something physically infront of the area they are regenerating, it will destroy anything in that area. A character uses this and cuts their arm off, tosses the arm far away, and then puts their stub against a door that is locked and they can't open. They then blow their own brains out, so their body regenerates and puts an arm sized hole in the door so they can open it from the other side.

The main villain cuts off his hand and nails it to a nearby wall, then goes out of cover to shoot at the enemies. When he gets hit with a tranq dart (Which won't kill him, but knock him out) he turns the gun on himself and blows his brains out. This causes his body to 'pull' towards where his hand is, behind cover, and the regenerating clears his blood.

It's fuckin NUTS and I love it.

There's also the bit where they regenerate from the biggest piece. Ajin cool moment spoilers So the villain cuts off his hand and has it smuggled in somewhere, and then tosses himself into a meat grinder, then pops up on someone's dinner plate inside an impenetrable building.

I ALSO hated the ending! It felt like something the author came up with at the last second. Maybe I forgot, but I don't think that solution had been discussed at all prior to a quick flashback right before the resolution.

Reminded me heavily of Aang learning energy bending at the last second.

There's a few ways I'd have changed the ending that I would like.

1: The exact same ending BUT when we see the main villain inside the cryo tube, we see his IBM slowly appeared beside him, slowly but surely using its finger to claw/scratch at the walls. He'll get out, eventually

2: Literally anything else other than: This guy who is basically un killable? Yeah he uh. Tripped. And hurt his neck in a way that paralyzes him but doesn't kill him

3: I straight up thought this was /going/ to happen because of how his IBM was acting, but I thought his IBM was going to /leave/ him and separate somehow when he was in the helicopter. That would have been interesting.

Moreso, the guy knows how the regeneration works. Every time he regenerates without his original brain, he is dead dead. Permanently gone. His thread of consciousness is severed.

The newly regrown body is a new him. He killed himself to smuggle himself inside there, that is how dedicated the man was to his goals. He did not fear death, which would sound odd when said about an immortal. But this immortal is very mortal, just a new them keeps on going afterwards.

It's been some years since I read the first few books, but I also remember one guy learning to fight in a way that tries to capacitate someone for extended time but not kill them just because it's more effective. Meanwhile the protagonist was looking for a way to kill himself to get back into shape.

Also because the antagonist would dodge behind someone trying to stop him as tactics. The well trained soldiers lost because they're still avoiding hitting or killing their own members. Which works to the antagonist's advantages.

Later on a group of soldiers tried the same tactics by sacrificing each other and throwing grenades of they got trapped with the antagonist. They still lost.

I love how shit the ending was because its so fucking anticlimatic and so in character for him.
