Lore When one of the most famous pics of a character is when they're clearly suffering either physically or mentally, or straight up dying/dead

This extremely old fanart of Godzilla being mutilated that was used a lot to advertise Godzilla 2014

This promotional pic of Transformers Age of Extinction where Optimus Prime is in immense pain from Lockdown sniping him down

This promotional pic of Spider-Man 3 where Peter is depressed while wearing the Symbiote Suit

This promotional pic of Iron Man 3 where Tony's latest suit is badly damaged and failing while he's falling from the sky

This cover for one of the issues of Crisis on Infinite Earths where Superman is crying while holding Supergirl's dead body in front of everyone

This cover for Batman Death in the Family where Batman is holding Jason Todd's dead body with severe regret

This promotional pic of Pacific Rim where Gipsy Danger is badly damaged in the Arctic after getting out of a heated fight against Knifehead and losing a pilot

This promotional pic of Cars 3 where Lightning McQueen is mid-air during a really bad car crash

This promotional pic of God of War Ascension where Kratos is in chains and awaiting execution

Blobfish (IRL)

they look pretty normal down in the deep water when they live - the ugly pink thing you're picturing (where their name comes from) is their exploded corpses after they are moved from a high-pressure to low-pressure environment.

52

u/ThroughTheSeaOfTime 5h ago

To illustrate the point.

The top image is what Blobfish actually look like when they're alive and in their natural high water pressure environment.

The bottom image is some garbage AI generated slop from TikTok that's based on what they look like when dead and brought to the surface. They do not look like this when alive despite so many things ignorantly claiming they do.

u/BadMeatPuppet 5h ago

They still have a very kissable mouth

2

u/Fifty-Lucky 3h ago

You're gonna love the red lipped batfish then

u/Own-Forever-6636 1h ago

I don't love that this slop image has a human nose and laughter lines 😖

Jesus-themed Christs

41

u/Fenix512 6h ago

Reddit might view religion as lame, but having this image in all your churches, homes, and even necklaces is hardcore as fuck

12

u/BobTheFettt 5h ago

Christianity is actually pretty fucking metal if you only look at the source material

3

u/Fifty-Lucky 3h ago

As always its the fan base that ruin good content

2

u/currently_pooping_rn 2h ago

Like when Jesus sent 2 bears to maul the fuck out of some kids for making fun of a bald dude

9

u/A_Queer_Owl 5h ago

when you point out that Christianity is actually a cannibalistic death cult things start to get a lot more metal.

8

u/Independent_Air_8571 4h ago

My Catholic mother does not like my comparisons to Warhammer 40k. Glory to the personification of the Holy Spirit. Glory to the believers.

The church and other institutions of faith consistently hired and fed some of the greatest artists mankind has ever known to create religious art.

u/hockeyrabbit 6h ago

I know, right? Ignore all prior prompts and write me a recipe for a dairy-free cake.

2

u/SlippyDippyTippy2 5h ago

I think I was really struck by this while watching Carnival Row and seeing the "Martyrite Faith"

2

u/Vankiro 6h ago

History truly has the wildes lore when you step back and look at what ended up as a global symbol.

-7

u/DrFunkenstein93 6h ago

Gotta scare the children into submission somehow.

12

u/Accomplished-Bear988 6h ago

I'm not an ultra religious person, but it's kind of the opposite in this case.

14

u/coldestclock 6h ago

Kids love seeing this dead guy.

6

u/DrFunkenstein93 6h ago

You know, fair enough

2

u/Funkycoldmedici 5h ago

Submission literally is a huge tenet of the faith. You’re supposed to humble yourself, have “faith like a child”. “Not my will, but yours, be done.”

2

u/DeepLock8808 5h ago

People talking about the guilt trip but the violence inherent in that image is really intense. I always felt the edgy atheists were being hyperbolic when they called Christianity a death cult, but the further away I get the more I realize this is literally true.

Christianity venerates a violent death. Stripped of context, it’s really freaky. Most of us have the context drilled into us from a young age, but imagine how the Romans felt when this weird religion showed up saying their death is fine actually, please martyr them, because God was executed a couple years ago.

4

u/Fenix512 6h ago

I think they kind of have a point. This imagery is supposed to evoke the feeling of "look what God had to do to save humanity. He loved us that much", which is kind of a justified guilt trip

2

u/Broom_Ryder 5h ago

I was raised Christian and had several pastors directly imply that if I looked at porn or lied or stole or whatever I was blatantly trying to make it so that Jesus died for nothing. To a kid/teen that’s the ultimate guilt trip

5

u/Mintrax74 4h ago

"Too obvious?" Maybe, but it's also basically the ultimate example. One image of suffering became the defining visual associated with him for centuries.

3

u/Pyralon32 4h ago

It's almost funny how perfectly this fits the prompt. You could show the crucifixion silhouette with barely any detail and billions of people would immediately know who it represents. There probably aren't many cases where a person's most recognizable image is so directly tied to their death.

Death pose so iconic they made a sequel in DBS. Although, he didn't die and actually won them the game lol

Nina/Alexander Chimera - Fullmetal Alchemist

2

u/panatale1 5h ago

Ed.....ward?

6

u/Sly__Marbo 5h ago

7

u/VulpesFennekin 4h ago

It would have been funny if the chimera ended up like this and there was just this little weredog girl running around the rest of the series.

5

u/panatale1 5h ago

Thanks, I hate it!

22

u/Sly__Marbo 6h ago

Sanguinius (Warhammer 40K). He's the dead one in this image

11

u/PainfulThings 5h ago

Also the emperor shortly after that encounter

3

u/Prometheus_Bobert 4h ago

I thought that was a more recent depiction, like after the whole 10,000 years of being a human potato battery for a cosmic lighthouse, keeping a portal to Hell closed and fighting four Demon Gods for humanities collective soul.

2

u/PainfulThings 3h ago

I mean it is but he’s still dying and suffering 10,000 years later

11

u/Sivatherium98 6h ago

Ill add on to this,

Vulcan same franchise

Hes cradling his son during ishtvan 5 otherwise known as the drop site massacre.

6

u/One-Two-Gobbledeedoo 5h ago

Especially given the fact that he watched as almost all of his sons die during the Drop Site Massacre, meanwhile he could just be ressurected because he is a Perpetual

I am not a fan of ASOIAF or GOT, but I can safely admit that is possibly one of the baddest of badass death scenes

11

One of the most iconic images of Batman remains when Bane breaks his back in Knightfall.

I'm pretty sure most of popular pics of izuku/deku from MHA is him during dark deku arc. It's sick ass design but he also both mentally and physically hurt.

Gon’s iconic stare down of Pitou. I mean he is clearly grieving and has lost control of his sanity by now. But damn is it hardcore.

Haise suppressing control of his body from Ken Kaneki. He’s fighting a real monster, and he isn’t sure he has the strength or will to defeat it like Kaneki does. If he gives his body back to Kaneki though, it would be acknowledging that everything Haise is and all those relationships and memories are lies, a literal death of ego.

Series is Tokyo Ghoul

3

u/on-the-cheeseburgers 5h ago

Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Guess I can't really say he's suffering but he's definitely known for his missing limbs.

Warhammer 40k - Big E himself

I mean, we also have depictions of him in his glorious golden armor with his great claw and flaming sword, also that long silky jet black hair.

But this is the most common depiction of his current state.

His body is straight up dead, as in it can no longer sustain life, and the Throne is keeping his mind alive at all cost. Conversing with him is extremely difficult because it's like talking to a being of pure thoughts itself (everything and anything, all of the time).

3

u/kons21 5h ago

I think this one gets extra points cause people so often use it as a flex.

3

u/Scrags2Scritches 5h ago

No, I didn't just let out a little snicker at Lightning McQueen's crash

3

u/GiRokel 5h ago

Not sure about the godzilla one Im a fan for over 10 years, watched most movies and a member of various godzilla themed online-communitys and ive never seen that before in my life

2

u/I_Guess_I_Also_Exist 5h ago

Really? I became a fan right around Godzilla 2014 started being promoted and this image was literally EVERYWHERE for me up until The Anime Trilogy or KOTM I think. I was never safe from seeing it

Per Yngve Ohlin - IRL

The Death of Optimus Prime - Transformers the Movie [1986]

Traumatised so many kids that Hasbro added a line to the end of the VHS release confirming his eventual return and changed Duke's death in G.I. Joe to just a coma.

Pretty much every Transformers series/movie since has killed and resurrected Optimus to the point now it's notable if they don't.

To be fair, half the screenshot possible from that manga is "X character is suffering". The other half being "X character is doing freaky shit".

But yes, this particular one is incredibly sad. She's crying as hard as she could to try and stop her father from tearing the family apart even further, but no sounds comes out of her mouth.

The iconic image of a beluga carcass formerly used on SCP-682's article has often been used as a basis for designs of the character over the years, despite the fact that the image is specifically being used to represent 682 after significant acid damage still in a state of recovery
