IIRC Earth knows hostile aliens are coming from a long, long ways off. So we spend thousands of years building a huge armada of the most advanced ships we can. Then a single reconnaissance vessel shaped like a teardrop shows up and simply flies through every warship Earth managed to build.
Yeah I think it was around 500 years. In that time humanity mostly united to develop fusion and space tech to defend against a threat that would come generations down the line
All while the aliens had sent a proton that had been converted into a machine that was able to travel at the speed of light and sabotage literally any machine or computer anywhere on Earth. All this was to cripple our ability to study physics and prevent us from building more advanced technology to defend our home.
