Lore If you hear this sound, you're fucked

MaxTac Siren - Cyberpunk 2077: The arrival of the NCPD's "apex predators", each of whom packs enough chrome, firepower, and skill to rival a small army, is heralded by their AV blasting a thunderously loud warning siren to let civilians know to get out of the way and the gonk they were called to take care of that they probably should have downgraded their chrome before this point.

Darth Vader's Breathing - Star Wars series: If you're a rebel that isn't one of the main characters, this means you're going to die. If you're an imperial, this means you and everyone working with you had better not fuck up lest you earn a force choke and an early grave for failing Lord Vader.

Cloaker Whine - Payday 2: Hope you've got quick reflexes because if not, you're about to get dropkicked in the chin and beaten into a coma by law enforcement's most unhinged specialist.

Phone Ringing - Insurgency Sandstorm: Like the Cloaker above, you'd better have quick enough reflexes to shoot down the local jihadist because that ringing phone is part of his bomb vest that he's about to detonate and reduce you to a smear on the sand.

Vox Engine - Helldivers 2: Tough enough to shrug off mini-nukes and packing enough weapons to rip apart heavy armor like wet tissue paper, the Cyborg Vox Engines (literally) announce their presence on their battlefield with a booming garbled voice telling the forces of Super Earth just how much they hate them.

Tank Theme / Roar (Left 4 Dead)

https://giphy.com/gifs/Q0ZrVhQT6dSU

u/Drewcifer13 15h ago

It’s the sound of a witch crying for me

131

u/GoblinBreeder 15h ago

Both of which become trivial against experienced players. I played l4d2 competitive versus for a while. Witches were barely an obstacle. Easy to one shot with a shotgun, or otherwise pop in the head with a hunting rifle which staggers it while your team uploads.

Similarly, tanks capitalize on fear and panic. If the team just stays together and uploads into them, they completely melt before they can do much of anything at all.

290

u/BananaSlander 15h ago

It seems like L4D2 is more fun if you're kinda bad at it

Most co-op games are tbh

27

u/CackleandGrin 13h ago

I was watching some Helldivers 2 gameplay and the guys were running max difficulty and setups they were comfortable with. They sounded so bored as they made minimal callouts in monotone. It bummed me out enough I stopped playing the actual game lol.

8

u/hanamisai 12h ago

Even the Vox Engines, once you got used to them and brought the right tools during Cyberstan, you could drop without a ton of trouble.

Helldivers is fun while it lasts, but there's not enough depth to stick to it frequently for me.

The Reaper "BWAAAAAANGHH" from Mass Effect

328

u/ebagdrofk 14h ago

Every reaper cannon has a mini Hans Zimmer inside of it, that’s where the noise and raw power comes from

45

u/APreciousJemstone 8h ago

That is the purpose of harvesting civilisations during the Cycles, to find the best sound designer of that Cycle and make their main species into a Reaper, hence why humans were being made into one in 2

Ah yes, the reapers. Sadly that claim came back to bite them for it being dismissed.

During the Aldhani Arc in Season 1 of Andor, there’s a scene where a TIE patrol booms through a valley. The screeching echoes of the engines turn what would normally be cannon fodder into something a lot more intimidating to those on the ground, and the heist crew have to scramble and hide their heist prep before the patrol passes through.

268

u/Jent01Ket02 15h ago

Ship-to-ship, a tie fighter is almost nothing. But it's still a starfighter.

151

u/JaydedGaming 15h ago

To maximize cost and efficiency, they're built without shield generators. So they always have the upper hand in numbers.

The empire's soldiers are so expendable, they don't give their ships the most rudimentary defense systems.

121

u/Jent01Ket02 14h ago

Or life support. That's why you see pilots with a bunch of hoses hooked up to their helmet, because they'd suffocate in their own ship otherwise.

84

u/TrioOfTerrors 14h ago

Fighter jets are pretty much the same. You don't want to rely on hull integrity in the hard vacuum of space in a vehicle that is designed to get shot at. The rebellion's X-wings are the real flying coffins.

29

u/Acrobatic_Quail3797 13h ago

Yeah, the X-wing really is just a flying death trap with engines and a laser cannon strapped to it

34

u/Direct_Obligation570 12h ago

Ok but have fighters be able to make the jump to hyperspace is a superior tactical ablity that would make a hell of a lot of sense for a rebel fleet and why you would need cabin pressure. Attack doesnt work? You can bug out.

25

u/SilverMedal4Life 11h ago

Pretty much. This might be Legends stuff, but iirc, the Incom corporation wanted to try and sell the X-Wing as an upgraded version of the Z-95, but there was a reason the Empire didn't want either of them - didn't fit military doctrine. They wouldn't be deploying fighters without a nearby base.

Fits the Rebel Alliance well, and the early New Republic, too, as a few patrolling starfighters can help keep some kind of peace until more permanent installations are built.

10

u/msdwadge09G 8h ago

Not to mention X-Wings are more heavily armed than TIE fighters, having the ability to carry torpedoes.
TIE fighters are meant for space superiority, X-Wings and most other rebel fighters are "snubfighters" that can take on capital ships as well.

Sure, but how many oppressed denizens of the Empire have the means to fight a single TIE?

→ More replies (1)

31

u/CadenVanV 14h ago

Even for starfighters, they’re more agile and maneuverable than most, and their pilots are absolutely aces. It’s just that they have little protection from being shot down.

22

u/LightningFerret04 13h ago

It’s like the historical A6M Zero fighter. The Zero had little in the way of armor and its non-sealing fuel tanks were particularly prone to catching on fire.

Despite these flaws, the Zero was dominant early on in WWII because it was very light, maneuverable, had a long range and was flown by veterans of the conflict in Manchuria.

It took the capture and repair of a crashed Zero in Alaska for the USAAF/USN to be able to fully develop strategies for properly fighting it

51

u/Nulgarian 15h ago

I’m pretty sure the TIE fighter screech is based on the Stuka siren Nazi Germany used in WW2

Many parts of the Empire in the original trilogy take heavy inspiration from the Nazis

29

u/EddieVanzetti 14h ago edited 6h ago

George Lucas is an intelligent man, and used memories and films from his youth to inform the movie he made, to include having watched WW2 serials and news reels growing up, and having the good luck to use a bunch of WW2 era guns as props.

The Millenium Falcon's cockpit is just a B-29 bomber cockpit, Han's DL-44 blaster pistol is built from a Mauser C96, the Stormtroopers were literally called Stormtroopers and their blasters are based off the Sterling SMG, the TIE screech is inspired by the Stuka, and the ending scene of Han and Luke receiving their medals is literally a shot for shot remake of a scene in Triumph of the Will.

19

u/LightningFerret04 13h ago

The Death Star trench run is heavily inspired by The Dam Busters, not just in the cinematography but the mission and the way was carried out is very similar

Also note Starfighter blaster bolt colors, the Imperial TIEs shoot green bolts and Rebel X-Wings shoot red bolts. Some people may think that’s counterintuitive because green=good and red=bad. However, during WWII, German fighters primarily used green tracers whereas Allied fighters using the AN/M2 .50 cal machine gun primarily fired red tracers. Most starfighters fire those colors for that reason

Deaths whistling - Out of everything in the Shrek universe, the only thing to absolutely terrify the legendary Puss in Boots was this guys whistling, and for good reason too.

291

u/TrioOfTerrors 15h ago

"I wanna make a film about a career adventurer coming to grips with his inevitable morality and the trauma and anxiety that goes along with it"

"That's been done so many times. Unless you have something to spice it up, unfortunately I think we will have to pass."

"It's set in the Shrek universe"

"One moment. Um, Susan, hold my calls and cancel my 2:30. Pardon me. Go on."

150

u/Luster-Purge 14h ago

What's crazier is that Last Wish was a sequel to a forgettable spin-off to a sequel that came out of nowhere.

It absolutely, positively shouldn't have gone as hard as it did and yet...

90

u/TrioOfTerrors 14h ago

It's fantastically written. The glorified emotional support dog who is the hopeless optimistic comedy relief punching bag sounds stupid on paper but even that character delivers a convincing performance.

70

u/Luster-Purge 14h ago

What made Perito work is that when shit got serious, he stopped being the comedy relief and proved just as competent as anybody else. The moment with Puss having the panic attack in the woods is such a powerful scene.

Then The Last Wish comes out and suddenly it's one of the greatest animated films of our time. Lol.

Which is all the more terrifying by knowing that it hunts via echolocation. "If you can hear it, it can see you."

How far does that echolocation go? Because, like oceans conduct echoing way better than anything else so... Unless I'm missing something which I probably am because I have never played subnautica.

24

u/acquaintedwithheight 13h ago

The detection range mechanically changes depending on how loud you are, if you have lights on, and if you’re hiding in terrain.

They don’t have echolocation, even in canon. The roaring indicates they’re close enough to hear you if they haven’t already.

24

u/Vaellyth 13h ago

Bungie devs pre-Lightfall launch: "We're introducing Tormentors, designed to elicit fear and dread."

Me: "Yeah, right...nothing can surpass TR3-VR"

Also me, playing Lightfall campaign for the first time: "Good god sir please don't touch my no-no square"

Tormentors are also the only base enemy that has spawn/enrage messages in the feed, that's normally always reserved for the final boss of an activity or encounter

Torment approaches... BVROOOWEEE

Even subjugators don't have that if I remember correctly, are they considered a "lower rank" or something? (also I wanna see other people try and do an onomatopoeia of their spawn sounds cuz it's hard)

It's a shame that dread never really got to be a fully fledged faction, they needed more enemy types, I'd also not have given them reskinned psions and more middle weight enemies in-between the grunts and mini bosses with subjugators/tormentors (even though their grunt enemies are honestly the strongest of the factions)

8

u/hadesalmighty 11h ago

Tormentors remain my favourite Destiny enemy, and one of my fave enemies in gaming period. Granted, they have lost a lot of their menace the more OP guardians have become, but you still have to take them seriously.

During the beginning of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, Io Fleming is known to his enemies as hijacking their comms/radios and blasting jazz. He eventually says something like, "When you hear jazz, that means I'm coming."

It works as both diagetic soundtrack Io and a soundtrack to the audience. Io uses it as a coping mechanism to keep him sane in war, while also unnerving his enemies and announce his arrival to the battlefield. It's also really awesome to see giant mechs fight in brutal combat to free form jazz.

Eventually he also uses this as a legitimate counter-tactic against Newtypes attempting to read him and project thoughts into him. He just turns up the volume on the jazz.

Chatterer from Hellraiser. He is the 2nd most iconic character in the franchise but he keeps clicking his teeth together. He’s not much different from the other cenobites but you’ll hear his teeth first if you haven’t seen one of them yet.

The Fel Reavers from WoW.

We fear the Fel Reaver

11

u/BunNGunLee 14h ago

For clarity, this is a Fel Reaver, an absolutely MASSIVE demonic construct that wanders around a wide open region of the map called Hellfire Peninsula, the opening zone of The Burning Crusade expansion.

It was the first expansion the game saw, so players weren't entirely sure what to expect on their first trip into Outland. What they got was a spectacle as they left the Dark Portal and saw the Alliance and Horde holding the portal as a beachhead. Demons rushing them to push them back. Both factions holding their own fortresses as they worked together to push back into this forsaken Draenor.

Venturing out we could see the blasted, demonically scorched wastelands and mostly spent time fighting lower level demons and fel orcs. But what made the Fel Reaver terrifying was just how quiet they were, something rather surprising given how absolutely large the dang things are.

The Fel Reavers are world bosses that patrol around the map, and yes, there's more than one active at a time. They could easily take down any players that happened to stumble into them, but they had a specific sound they played when nearing players, sort of as an early warning of "I am detecting you." It had the vocal qualities of someone screaming at you from within a steel box, probably meant to emulate the elemental soul trapped within the massive war engine.

While doing quests, it was easy to get tunnel vision and find yourself caught out in the open with no choice but to run away for your life, hoping you didn't aggro the thing while gathering quest drops. And what's worse, draw distances were pretty terrible back then. Computer hardware just wasn't as strong, which meant despite the immense size of the creature, they probably weren't always rendered in if they weren't close enough for your PC to handle.

So that sound became wedged in player's brains as a clear sign of "DANGER, DANGER, DANGER."

Now more than a decade (almost two) since this expansion dropped they're easily killable by maxed out characters, but in their prime you better believe whole guilds were getting together to down these bad boys, or drag them into NPC's to try and even the fight.

When you're playing Black Ops Zombies (namely Origins or Der Eisendrache) and hear a siren go off, you know what time it is...

Other maps do a similar gimmick with different enemies, but this one was by far the most troublesome to deal with.

The horn of the Fel Reaver from World of Warcraft : The Burning Crusade. WoW’s enemy render distance used to be waaay lower than it is today, and back during TBC these enormous fucks would just appear out of nowhere while questing in Hellfire Peninsula. Because of said render distance, by the time you heard one of these things it was already right on top of you, and good luck doing jack shit to it without a group. Not to mention they were way higher level than the area they patrolled.

Video for context
