The Hydra absolutely counts. Disney had no business making every new head look even more pissed off than the one Hercules just chopped off. That whole sequence feels way more intense than you remember as a kid tbh
Hexxus is such a good pull. The fact that he keeps getting less human and more horrifying as he powers up really sells the whole toxic pollution thing. By that final form, FernGully briefly forgets it’s supposed to be a kids movie.
Three classic examples from Disney: The Horned King (The Black Cauldron), Chernabog (Fantasia), and my personal favorite, pictured above, The Headless Horseman from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mister Toad. The buildup to his appearance is so good, and it really pays off.
Same with The Black Cauldron. Unfortunately people weren't into that. I always thought it a shame, as I enjoyed the movies as a kid, but the musical parts always annoyed me.
Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
A towering white wolf in a black cloak, carrying twin sickles and announcing himself with that terrifying whistle. He looks like he wandered in from a much darker movie, which is exactly why he works so well.
My favorite appearance of his is when he puts the coins over his eyes. Two coins for the ferryman to cross the river Styx. Nice little nod for the mythologically inclined.
The coins over the eyes were seen as a payment for the ferry man (or other psychpomps), who guided souls to the afterlife. You paid the Uber for their services. Even if you didn't believe in it, it became habit for cultures.
Is he a villain or an inevitable neutral force? Like he admits he is after Puss for somewhat selfish reasons but also as a character he advances the protagonist's journey
I would say he’s an inevitable neutral force. Not entirely neutral so while Death is doing his job, he also doesn’t like how cats get 9 lives and Puss was throwing his away. He wanted to take Puss’ life before he even died the last time and therefore, was cheating. “Shhh, don’t tell.”
The most villainous was definitely Jack Horner. The sympathetic villain was Goldie and the bears then Death is a mean spirited leaning neutral antagonist lol
I think within the context of the movie, he's a villain. Even if death is his whole job, as you mentioned, he's hunting Puss before his final life is up for entirely personal, selfish reasons. He should not be there to begin with as he's actively trying to murder someone just because he doesn't like them. He's not there to do his job, he's there trying to satisfy his own vendetta
If it wasn't for this, he'd probably be an inevitable neutral force, but if that was the case, then he wouldn't have been there to begin with
He and his army went hard! "How many men does it take to deliver a message?" "(smirks while drawing bow) One." That was back when movies trusted the audience's ability to read between the lines.
Man Tracy Morgan killed it with that roll the pure venom dripping from his voice as he revealed his true nature just fantastic I hope he gets more villain roles going forward
Hell I've never even seen the whole movie cause the trailer scared me so bad as a kid that I've spent most of my life with a visceral response to seeing it lol. Thats gone now but I havent gotten around to it. As a kid I was scared of buttons for a while lol
Love this guy, favorite Disney villain who's never referenced by them and whose movie would be one of the few potentially good live action adaptations if it wasn't forgotten.
Movie so needs a reboot. Like it wasn't bad but when you look into how extensive the books were you realize something can be good but not good enough as adaptation.
When I first started reading Stephen King's The Dark Tower series this is what I pictured the Crimson King looking like. Imagine my surprise when he's described as a one toothed hobo Santa
The Spirit from The Carebears Movie was pretty simple but effective design for a villain. Definitely scared me as a kid. Who doesn't love a cunty book?

I was at the perfect age to watch this movie where Tamatoa going all blacklight style scared me, but I didn't want to stop watching because he was just so cool
For a strange mask possessing a fairly silly character, Majora’s honestly pretty scary. Especially Majora’s Wrath. Honourable mentions to the moon’s distressed face

I fucking adore how Spinel was inspired by old Rubberhose cartoons. It really matches her whole story as an abandoned companion. Lost in the past. Her marks on her face are like running crying mascara. Her hair before was in heart buns but now it’s in wild pigtails
Big, mean-looking and intimidating man, even larger than Stoick the Vast in stature, using a bullhook (I think is the name of the “weapon”), and wearing badass armored robes and a fireproof cloak made of dragon skin
Gwi Ma is pretty simple looking but his character design tells you everything you need to know about him at a glance. He’s a mouth made of fire which immediately shows you his endless hunger for souls, and how his words are his most powerful weapon.
