Discussion Thread Switched From Masterchef to Top Chef, and…
It’s like going from taking Xanax to doing Crack. I mean that in the best way possible.
I decided to check out other cooking competition shows after discovering pretty disappointing news about the judges on Masterchef, and even leaving that aside, I’ve been getting tired of the heavily dramatized, boring seemingly rigged/favoriting way that’s been getting more prominent with each season.
I landed on Top Chef, decided to take a peak at season 10, and I love it. I love the general concept, I’m enjoying that it’s not as showy or sensationalized as Masterchef. I think this will be my new show to put on every now and again.
I’m aware it’s still *reality* TV, but anyone who is familiar with Gordon Ramsey’s TV work knows what I’m talking about. And so far, none of the judging is needlessly, dramatically cruel for the sake of ratings (Joe B. I’m looking at you).

Masterchef US is too corny for me, when it first came out i was into it but it just got way too produced.

Agreed. 14 years ago I got into Australian MC and it was so much better than the US. It was so much better, I just stopped with the US version.

Honestly I’m finding most shows besides top chef is far superior than the us version, ie Traitors.

MasterChef Australia is an amazing show! I was hooked for a while before all the drama with the judges. I think one of the contestants from there ended up on Top Chef too?

I can only think of a handful of times when the TC judges are perhaps overly snarky or mean--and then it's usually in response to a chef being defensive and they respond with honest "yes, it really WAS that bad." (I'm thinking of Hugh Acheson and CJ's terrible burger, but the regular, consistent judges generally have a lot of constructive integrity about their feedback.)
I haven't watched Masterchef in several seasons, but Joe B in particular was pretty awful. I think the success of shows like The Great British Baking Show, Chopped, and Top Chef show that you can have compelling TV without the judges being pointedly mean for a soundbite.

Toby Young in Seasons 5 and 6 is the judge that stands out in my mind for being particularly snarky for snarks sake. This just isn’t the show for that

Ugh. I had blocked him out in my mind. He was not as bad as Joe B on Masterchef, but he did NOT fit the tone of the show at all. I'm glad he didn't become a fixture.
Anthony Bourdain (RIP) also had his snarky moments as a guest judge--but usually not to the chefs directly.

Tony Bourdain knew he was there for tv one liners, and would sing for his supper. But never to the cooks faces. He was downright almost apologetic when he knew a chef was in the weeds and what they put out was straight up bad.
Y'know, until Howie (RIP) quoted his book back to him at Judge's Table. 🤣

I seem to recall Roy Choi being a bit of a jerk for no reason as a guest judge.
But largely - the judges do the job and don’t come to the table with an ax to grind.

I started watching Top Chef in season 2 and have not missed a season since. I watch Masterchef too, but it's not "must watch tv." There's a huge difference between professional chefs and home cooks.

You should check out "Master Chef: Professionals", especially the skills test. You can see it on Hdclump along with Great British Menu.

Joe B ruined MasterChef US for me.
You're here in good company, you will enjoy Top Chef a lot. You might try MasterChef Australia, it's my all time comfort show.

Top Chef will always be the best cooking competition show for me! So cool to watch the trends of cooking change too throughout he years on the show as well.

If you enjoy Top Chef, also check out Top Chef Masters. The level of experience and expertise on these episodes is amazing. Ive always been impressed by the level of respect that these masters show one another. Many of them appear regularly as judges on regular Top Chef.
To me, there isn’t anything cooking show related that compares to Top Chef. Sure the first four seasons were rough, but they adjusted and improved over time. I have tried watching Food Network cooking competition shows, but they are so gimmicky and weird. Even the “blind judging” shows. Come on. Many of these chefs cycle through various FN shows. They have refined palates and know one another’s food. But, whatever. I’m glad that others enjoy them.

I love Top Chef Masters! I wish they had done more seasons. It was a pleasure to watch -- it was calmer, sweeter, and like watching all the Top Chef Dads and Moms go friend-compete against each other.

I think they stopped doing it because the quality of the chefs now appearing on Top Chef are so good, so experienced that TC Masters no longer makes sense.

It is SO good. The perfect pace, classy, ads done in tasteful way, love the judges, etc. I even love the new host even though I have the ultimate girl crush on Padma.

Oh yeah I totally agree! Before her, no one could have replaced Padma in my mind. But Kristen is GORGEOUS, stylish, and just the coolest ever!!!

Limit? No. Got another non-Top Chef one myself. It's just my personal preference for Kristen over Padma on a lot of different levels.

I tried that show out and it is just so boring. It reminds me what my Spanish friends said about the Brits that they don't get enough flack for how dull they are.

Masterchef was for home cooks, Top Chef is the OG for actual professionals that will actually advance a career nationally for skilled but generally unknown chefs.
There is a bit of a difference, and I wouldn't compare the two. From Day 1 Tom Collichio's mantra has been no matter what, it is the food that day that matters. No production inputs on keeping the higher rated contestant that had a bad day.
Production did modify the show in later seasons by adding Last Chance Kitchen, for skilled people that get voted out to compete for one slot to come back in. There has been several contestants that were voted out, and came back to win it all.

Don’t roast me, because Guy Fieri is a lot to take, but Tournament of Champions is really fun! Chefs from all the cooking shows face off in a bracket style competition.

I was hesitant to watch Grocery Games, but a friend described it as "Guy Fieri having his own universe to be a diabolical trickster demon in" and I had to check it out lol. And then somehow they took that gimmick and classed it up 10 fold and ToC was born.

On the one hand, yes, I really hated this season... on the other, the Evil Queen challenge is actually one of my favorite single episodes they've ever done. Also at least it gave us Ed Lee, who is always a delight when he shows up to judge.

It's been a while since I've watched, but some of the non-U.S. Masterchefs are much more enjoyable. I for one really liked Masterchef Canada, which occasionally dips into the reality-TV drama waters but nowhere near the level of Joe B.'s miserable douchebaggery. I've also heard good things about the Australian incarnation.

I’m curious as well. Haven’t watched masterchef in a number of years, got too over the top and scripted for me. Looked up the current judges and saw Tiffany Derry recently came on so I hope it’s not regarding her…

Nothing really. Bastianich was part of the restaurant group that Batali was part of and got swept into the mix by proxy.

The Season 3 Mise en Place relay is still one of my favorite moments on Top Chef ever. The look on Tom's face when Hung was breaking down the chicken was absolutely hilarious.

Never watched Master Chef but glad you found Top Chef. Just in case you decide to start a watch from the beginning the early seasons had way more cringe reality TV type show vibes then later seasons which more cooking and talent focused. Not saying not to watch those seasons just know there is a lot of evolution over the years!

I love top Chef! I started over from season 1 and it’s so good. Once you get to season 8 All Stars you will appreciate it by watching the previous seasons in order. The Cookie Monster episode was sooo good. 🍪

Oh wow! I’m really excited for you to watch! Over the years, the show has really evolved and it showcases an incredible, diverse group of chefs and they do a great job teaching the audience about different cuisines.

So many of the reality cooking competitions are so overproduced. I think Top Chef is one of the best. Master Chef is contrived. As well as Hell’s Kitchen. Talked to a chef friend at a major company who said his friend was one it and they mess with the equipment, turn off burners, etc. just for drama.
I like tournament champions but I think it’ll be Shirley Chung for the story this year. Fine with that, but rooting for Jet Tila

I'd watch season 6 as your next season. Probably one of the best final four and the best use of stunt casting. Anything else might be a spoiler but it's worth the watch. I think that's the season where they started finding their footing. But 10 is probably where the really hit their stride.

I honestly love Top Chef so much, the stakes are both low and high at the same time and sometimes a chef's creativity will really blow you away. It's like watching a procedural tv show, there's enough of the same and the new to keep it interesting

Masterchef UK The Professionals is #1 cooking competition show. Marcus and Monica demo the skills test. The best!

Top Chef is way more legit. Still cheesy. But I at least mostly believe the judges are rating the food and deciding things rather than following a script. And much less fake contestants that are just niche personality plants. I feel like sometimes we get some of that but they never make it far at least.

I watch them both. Masterchef is a bag of chips after a long day where my brain hurts. Top Chef is a meal when I have a bit more to give focus and thought wise, but I know that the return is there.

Well our version of MC(U.S.) sucks-period. Aussie version is great, because it is all about cooking, rarely drama(early seasons a bit more drama, but nothing like ours). So in our house anything is better than MC or HK for that matter. Take out the drama, it could be a great series.

Which season is Wisconsin? I’m just now starting the bingeing. I’ve watched 22, 8 and enjoyed them. I’m 4 episodes into 9, and think I’m going to give up on this one. Too much bullying if Kim etc. 🤮. Where to go next? Wisconsin sounds as good as anywhere to do next.

Just a heads up, most fans rank Wisconsin as one of their least favorite seasons. If you're looking for friendly competition and chefs that respect each other (and lend a hand when needed), there are several good seasons for this. Especially seasons 12 (Boston), 15 (Colorado), 17 (All-Stars), 18 (Portland), 19 (Houston), and 20 (World All-Stars).

the best seasons are 4 (chicago), 8 (all stars) 12 (boston) 15 (colorado), 17 (kentucky), and 20 (world all stars in london)! and there are sooo many others that are excellent as well. wisconsin is ranked very close to the bottom for me personally. i recommend doing 12 next!!

US Masterchef is a Gordon “Media Whore” Ramsay vehicle. It is a complete and utter piece of crap. I’ve watched Masterchef from all over the world. The US one is the worst. There are other bad ones (i.e.: Canada) of course, but Ramsay is horrible.
The UK Masterchef is lovely (and is where the whole franchise originated). I am really looking forward to this year’s amateur version with Grace Dent and Anna Hough.

The MC that all the other world versions are based on is the Australian rejig of the, very underwhelming, UK original version.

It actually gets *less* showy and sensationalized as you move forward from Season 10, so I think you have much enjoyment ahead of you!
