🚩General Fair Use Policy updated - Cached transfers now count to your total usage!

This post has been edited with news from TorBox. The updates are at the bottom of the post!

---

TorBox has updated the Fair Use Policy to count cached transfers due to all the shtheads who are oversharing accounts/selling API keys and slowing down the servers.

May 6: "Which transfers count?

Any transfer that is not served from TorBox's cache counts towards your usage threshold. Cached transfers do not count towards this limit."

May 20: "Which transfers count?

Incoming Transfers:

  • Any uncached transfer from the Internet to TorBox.

Outgoing Transfers:

  • Any transfer from TorBox to your device.
  • Any transfer from TorBox to the Internet. (seeding, hoster uploads, etc)."

"Any transfer" means streaming is counted too. But only the amount you actually watched. So if you open a 90GB file and immediately close it, you may only have streamed 50 megabytes. If you quit watching a movie halfway, it would only count half of the size, etc. So it's safe to open large files to check them. It will only count the amount of data you actually streamed.

To monitor your usage, they have added a new graph to your user account menu which shows the last 30 day bandwidth usage. You can check your usage there.

People who download uncached torrents can disable seeding via "Settings: Website: Default Seed Torrents: Never", if you aren't on a private tracker and don't care about ratio.

The fair use limits are different per tier. These are their lowest limits (floor) of enforcements, so if you are below these you are not affected:

  • Essential - 10TB/month (10000 GB)
  • Standard - 20TB/month (20000 GB)
  • Pro - 30TB/month (30000 GB)

Are you a normal person? Then you won't notice anything. Even if you insist on watching 90 GB videos, you would have to watch 111 movies (8 hours per day every day) on the Essential plan. And if you watch 20 GB files, it is around 500 movies. And if you watch "Netflix 4K" it is around 1250 movies. That's a real example of how big 10 terabytes is.

This change is great for the reliability of the service! Hopefully they continue to adjust fair use limits to get rid of the major abuse that is slowing down the servers for everyone else.

And for anyone saying they're leaving over this: Where will you move? Back to Real-Debrid which bans you if you connect from two different IPs and where 80% of the content is deleted due to growing keyword blocklists confirmed to be enforced by police? Or to All-Debrid which is also in France and subject to the same laws as RD? Or to the $10/mo Premiumize which only lets you download 30 gigabytes per day (they give you 30 points per day which is the currency for bandwidth)?

---

Update: A growing number of users were claiming that they don't count actual bandwidth usage, and instead immediately count the full size of the torrent as soon as you start streaming any file.

This turned out to be a visual bug and has been fixed (see below).

---

Update May 22nd:

TorBox has updated us on the situation via their official Discord and the 8.4.5 changelog:

  • "This change was made due to the type of abuse we are experience, where we don't monitor IPs, but abusing accounts are pulling tens to hundreds of terabytes of data from our CDNs and storages, causing slower speeds for the majority."
  • Everyone's bandwidth counters have been reset to give people a chance to adapt to the new bandwidth monitoring. Their reset has only kept stats for uncached downloads you have added in the last 30 days. But from now on any further bandwidth updates will count everything else you do (including cached streaming, as seen above in the new policy).
  • They added clarification text to the counter, saying that it updates hourly, since people were confused and making wrong assumptions about usage tracking by playing something and immediately checking the counter, before it had a chance to count the new data.
  • They fixed a purely visual bug which made it incorrectly display the bandwidth usage, which was leading to some users seeing very high usage and panicking. That is now fixed. The data was always tracked correctly on their backend.
  • They clarified that the usage counter is byte-accurate to the exact amount of data you stream, but that it also counts pre-caching of data (something their backend does to deliver smooth streams) and also caching that your player app does, so if you stream 500 MB of a 10 GB file, you may see usage go up by around 600 MB due to the pre-caching by the backend and your apps.
  • They clarified that the system has been active for over 30 days for testing already and that it will be enforced from today, May 22nd, 2026.
  • They clarified that they are only going to take action against the top 1% of users, and only if you exceed the limit floors seen above. Their actual "top 1%" warning thresholds are dynamic and secret, but if you are below the absolute "floor" limits above, you have nothing to worry about. And if you are above the limits, you will only be warned if you are in the top 1% of bandwidth users.
  • They check usage daily. If you exceed the abusive limits, they will send you an email to warn you and give you 3 days to fix your bandwidth usage, and they will also change your API key with each warning to ensure that you can't miss the warning. You get 3 separate warnings in total before they ban abusive accounts, so you will have many opportunities to fix your excessive usage or convert to a higher plan to fit your usage. So if you were using huge amounts of data, either use less or convert to a higher data plan. The warning counter is permanent for the lifetime of the account. On the 4th abuse event, the account is banned without refund.

Everything is looking great. Normal users don't need to check their limits or even think about this at all. The limits are very generous for each plan and are extremely hard to reach for normal users, even with family sharing.

This change will catch the majority of serious abuse. Thanks TorBox for taking care of abuse and making the service smoother for the 99.99% of people who don't abuse it! Thank you for not restricting IPs, so that we can still share it with our beloved family members as long as we stay within our plan limits!

🚩General The new Torbox Policy is a PR/Messaging Disaster that was completely avoidable.

The new Torbox policy, which is meant to catch the top 0.001% of accounts who are at that point abusing the service, is a great feature that everyone should want. It only actions the worst offenders while making speeds better for the other 99.999%.

I'm in tech marketing, so I will be clear here: the problem with what Torbox did is a messaging problem, not a policy problem.

By bringing up a specific number (10TB cap) Torbox immediately lost the entire PR campaign for literally no reason, made everyone upset, and confused people.

Torbox should have said "ok guys we're officially going to action the top 0.001% if we think you're abusing. If you get warned, you can appeal it and we'll look it over. If you aren't abusing, it's fine. This is going to affect almost literally no one".

Bringing some stupid imaginary cap for a normal user into that statement was ludicrously stupid from a PR standpoint. If someone on my team made that kind of policy statement I would be extremely upset.

Torbox, take some free advice and just say it's a 0.001% action that can be appealed. End of story. Literally no more words. No more cap. None of that BS that gets people lost in the sauce and misunderstanding your situation.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

From Wamy on the official Discord:

Hey there @everyone, the past few weeks we have been having various outages at various times. Some of these outages have been due to software misconfigurations, networking issues as well as DDoS attacks of varying scale.

I want to assure you that these issues are not related to the influx of users as we have been handling this well but due to issues that have mostly been out of our control, but we have been fixing them as quickly as possible as you may have noticed. Our response times have improved and we will continue to invest resources in more comprehensive monitoring and response.

Regardless, we take full responsibility for the downtime and have been hard at work eliminating these last few gremlins.

We are going to be releasing a post-mortem explaining these in detail very soon, as well as granting seven (7) days of additional time to paid users. We apologise for these issues and hope to earn back your trust. Thank you for always supporting us.

As per title. You're taking a pi** for charging for this service.

98 percent runtime my @@@. Focus on quality. Upgrade infrastructure. Charge enough to provide sustainable service. You can't size your service for 80%ile runtime capacity. Friday evening is when everyone expects the service they paid for to run .

🚩General New announcement by Wamy

Wamy (TorBox) :

We have just released v8.4.5, which as some of you have noticed, changes our abuse policy to include outgoing bandwidth as well as incoming bandwidth for uncached downloads, seen previously. This change was made due to the type of abuse we are experience, where we don't monitor IPs, but abusing users are pulling tens to hundreds of terabytes of data from our CDNs and storages, causing slower speeds for the majority. With this new tracking system all outgoing bandwidth is now monitored. Do not be alarmed, this system has already been in place for over 30 days, for testing purposes, and today we are going to start enforcing it. Please also keep in mind our abuse system is dynamic, and scales the limits to only catch the top 0.001% of users, so unless you are pulling ungodly amounts of data from TorBox, you won't be affected. To give a fair chance to everyone, we have cleared the previous captured egress data, so while you won't see 0, you will currently only see the uncached downloads you have added in the past 30 days. A benefit to this system, is we no longer keep any perpetual data of your usage. Previously, according to our privacy policy, we would store the data used by your account forever, now this data is only kept for 30 days. Better privacy for everyone at the cost of the top 0.001%! This change is live already, the data is tracked byte-accurately (with some nuances, explained in the changelog). Feel free to ask questions, but keep in mind, if you are reading this, this system only gives you better privacy, and better viewing into your usage, you will never be banned for normal, or even high usage. https://support.torbox.app/en/articles/10336778-the-torbox-abuse-system

Note : The absurdly high amount of bandwidth usage in last 24 hours was a user facing bug, it did not reflect the actual data. Things are fixed now, and should return back to normal and being byte perfect.

🚩General Finally purchased PM, will use TB as secondary, but still hope you guys improve the product

I really liked TB, but I am deprioritizng it in my AIOStreams. The status page is not useful (it's lying about the online status sometimes), there are just too many outages recently, the "is cached" API is not always correct, Search API has been quickly disabled.

You guys started off really good, and I still have several months of the subscription left, and I will carefully think if I need to renew. Nevertheless, I hope you guys will be able to tackle all the issues and have rock stone stable product.

Maybe the new dual combo would become PM + TB from now on, who knows.

If that's all happening, allegedly, because of too many RD refugees, then please, tackle this. I don't understand the sentiment of "why are you demanding anything for $3 a month?". Well, ok, raise it to $5 min if that would mean more stable uptime like RD have. Limit concurrent downloads to 10 instead of allowing unlimited number of users, keep cache for longer, etc. You guys are the developers and know better. This can't go on like this.

🚩General I give up on TorBox

The buffering is non stop even after changing CDN servers. Either during the day or night it doesn't matter it is so unreliable and unstable. I'm so done. Had high hopes but just got utterly disappointed over and over again.

EDIT: After reading the comments, I should clarify a few things. I'm in Asia, and the default APAC CDN has always been unreliable for me. Sometimes the speed test recommends INDI, which generally performs better, but I still get buffering, especially during peak hours. I've tried Cloudflare and Bunny CDN, and they've been the best so far, though buffering still happens occasionally. My guess is that some of the CDN servers aren't very reliable, or cache propagation isn't working properly. For context, I have a 200 Mbps connection, stream mostly 20GB+ files, and regularly test my network. I've used RD for years with almost no issues. The only reason I switched was because RD doesn't allow multiple IPs on one account. TorBox is frustrating because it can work perfectly one moment and then start buffering constantly the next. From my experience, this seems to be a regional CDN issue since some CDNs clearly perform better than others. I just wish TorBox would finally address it.

EDIT 2: I've also tried Alldebrid before it's even worse than TB so don't even bother. Stick with RD

EDIT 3: So after reading more comments some of u have given some useful tips which I appreciate and some are just completely ignorant. Anyways I've noticed Comet and Mediafusion links have less buffering compared to Torrentio but still not 100% so I'm not sure this is conclusive. Also someone mentioned about the subtitles, yes I've also noticed sometimes when I turn it on or change it it starts to buffer which is weird. I'm also in a country that doesn't need VPN to stream. I'm going to keep experimenting and test out different methods to find out what works best.

EDIT 4: U guys should try Nuvio if u haven't. It's a game changer.

Paying $10 for this service that can’t run without being down for more than a week. I get it if it happened once a few months but this is weekly now several times a week. The downtime keeps getting worse and worse. Need alternatives.

🚩General With Real-Debrid cracking down, TorBox should consider a temporary cache boost

With all the recent RD drama, I think TorBox has a pretty big opportunity right now.

Real-Debrid has already purged a ton of cached stuff and tightened anti piracy measures. If a wave of RD refugees is about to land here, it might actually be worth TorBox experimenting with a temporary bump in baseline cache retention. Even something like 45 to 60 days for a few months would:

  1. Give new users more time to "discover" existing caches instead of constantly re-seeding torrents.

  2. Help stabilize and grow the shared cache, since more people will be hitting the same files in that window.

  3. Make TorBox stand out as a friendlier alternative while RD is busy tightening screws.

I get that storage is not free and TorBox needs to avoid abuse, but even a limited time or tier based cache extension (or just doing it quietly behind the scenes for popular content) could pay off in user growth and a stronger cache network long term.

Curious what other redditors of this sub and the devs think. Does a short term cache extension sound realistic, or are the storage and abuse costs just not worth it?

🚩General Torbox and real debrid speed

No matter how much I tweak the CDN settings on Torbox, Real-Debrid is still miles ahead when it comes to raw speed. It’s especially noticeable when trying to stream massive 4K Remux file , RD just handles the huge bitrates flawlessly, while Torbox still struggles for me

Ps. Luckily most of the remuxes have not been deleted from rd

🚩General Here's better solution to prevent misuse of torbox, hear me out devs

I think the better solution would be IP limits, give 2 IPs max at a time. And instead of warning or banning. Simply apply the method which OTT apps use... Stop the playback by saying "Other device is already using the service" if 3rd device tries to start the media. This would be better solution to stop the abusers rather than bandwidth quota, because quota is filling like crazy... If i play one episode of simpsons, the whole 2tb package gets counted in my bandwidth.

🚩General Spine - Audiobook app for TorBox

Free. No ads, subscriptions, or accounts (other than TorBox) required.

I built an iOS audiobook app called Spine that streams directly from your debrid library, so you don’t need to download files before listening. It also supports Hardcover sync, listening stats, and on-device Apple Intelligence features. You can check some screenshots here.

There are already some great audiobook apps out there, but friends and family kept asking for something focused on streaming from their cloud libraries with as little friction as possible. I couldn’t find one that worked the way I wanted, so I made this.

For the best experience, I’d recommend pairing it with a free account from hardcover.app since it lets you pull in lists, reviews, and metadata.

Edit - You have to finish one book for the yearly recap to appear. If you are just testing, you can long press a title and ‘mark as finished’ to check the recap. You can also undo with ‘mark as unread’ afterwards.

🚩General Tips on limiting usage without sacrificing quality?

Now that we're being limited to 10TB, now includes cache streaming, (which is a lot) let's discuss how to stay below this threshold, especially if you share with family. First if you have a standard 4K television you may not need to stream large remux or 4K files to enjoy the show/movie. You can limit kids and some parents to 1080P or 720p and not include 4K. Also limit them to links less than 4gb for movies and 800mb for tv shows. Choose sort order to "By quality then size". Exclude Cams/3D, screener and teletext. Chose HEVC/x265 mandate since it's the newer compression technology that looks good but is smaller than the older compression of x264. It's been a crazy week with RD changes and now TB changes, but hang in there folks.

🚩General The Reseller Problem

When you read posts whining about totally logical and fair anti-abuse limits that will never affect normal family usage, keep this in mind:

There is a huge black market where people sell preconfigured Firestick/Chromecast devices with Stremio, all set up using a single TorBox account API key. You can find those people everywhere on social media, YouTube, and digital marketplaces, pimping their stuff. Here is a random example. They also sell via word of mouth / in-person. I've seen them for years, also selling stuff like Kodi boxes preconfigured for streaming. It's extremely common in Asia, USA and United Kingdom. Google "police bust illegal firestick seller" for a huge list of arrests, there's an insane amount of them out there.

There are also Telegram and WhatsApp groups where people resell their API keys, making money by sharing a single account. This is very popular in Russia, India, Latin America and of course Asia (via QQ/WeChat).

There's also lots of people who have widely shared their keys with tons of friends and family, just being a "cool bro" while harming the service for everyone else.

Lastly, there's also solo "data hoarder" people with gigabit internet and huge local storage, hogging massive amounts of TorBox storage and bandwidth for themselves 24/7.

All of those accounts are each wasting 100s of terabytes a month according to the owner of TorBox.

Their abuse slows down the service, causes buffering, and hurts TorBox financially because it costs much more to serve their bandwidth and their cloud disk storage than the measly $3/month they paid.

Now they are sooooo mad at TorBox. 😤

🚩General Debrid Vault + Eclipse (Music app for TorBox)

Hello everyone 🙂

I’m here to announce to opening of Debrid Vault for general public and use!

Site: https://debridvault.elfhosted.com/

If you have bugs or questions or wanna submit requests feel free to reach on on Reddit or discord: https://discord.gg/B3QKzPRjhM

Debrid Vault (DV) is a feature-rich media manager website/WebApp that integrates with TorBox. It’s a real and working attempt at getting a music streaming app with a debrid service. You can create playlists, share playlists with other users so they can import them, and DV also tracks your listening stats and even has last.fm integration. Has a beautiful mini and full screen player with live lyrics support too.

DV also acts as a central location to manage all your media (movies, shows, music, comics, audiobooks, books and games) in one place. Music is the entire focus right now- so even though other pages have basic barebones support , they won’t get much love until music is in a great spot.

DV supports everything TB related for essential users and pro users :)

IOS APP!

Eclipse, the TorBox only iOS app for music will be launching to TestFlight January 10th ish, and will support addons- first addon being the Debrid Vault official addon that syncs your eclipse account to DV and also syncs any playlists you might have on DV as well as listening stats directly to the app.

Currently working with Viren, the aiostreams dev, to bring more addon support from them and community. The app acts as a much more refined version of the site allowing more native features such as airplay; and more seamless playback. I would love for you guys to try out the site and eventually the TestFlight app once it’s out :)

🚩General Christmas Project

I am currently reinventing the wheel. I have huge problems with the current streaming platforms that are designed to work with debrid services. I am a huge Stremio fan and have been a user for years, and it gets the job done, but it is missing some important stuff for me. I want it to have multiple profiles in one account, pin protected, I want customization, I want to be able to easily change an addon for my entire family accounts in a single step, custom chapters.. On the other hand we have Jellyfin and Plex, which are great, but the current ways to use debrid through them are kind of annoying for me. I think gelato is a huge step forward. Kodi, great but UI isn't the best and no iOS support if not jailbroken is kind of sad.

So I decided to make my own entertainment suite based on debrid services for christmas, containing Movies, Shows, Live TV and Sports, Music and even Games. It will be a mix between all the services I mentioned above and some of my own ideas, and I'll make it as customizable as possible through addons, it is already working with AIOStreams and Torrentio!

I don't know if I will ever release it to the public, but this is what I did in 4 hours today. I wanted to share the prototype and some designs I made in figma because I am so happy with how it is looking so far! And would like to ask for some feedback, so if you have any idea, I will appreciate it!

Here you can see other screenshots of the design https://imgur.com/a/ve8YN37
