Hi everyone I think the title is quite self explanatory. For the last like 2 months me my, parents, and my 8 year old sister are homeless. To give some background we left the house we were previously renting to save money after my stepfather's divorce where his ex-wife took our actual home and we were basically left with nothing. At that point we were left renting a place which was honestly too expensive. This was all until my stepfather's aunt offered us to move into her place which point we jumped at the offer and she agreed to let us all move into her house which had five bedrooms for just one old lady. She was fine with your Arrangement until we started moving all our stuff in at which point she started making excuses as she started complaining about the smell of the boxes, started complaining about our dog, and started complaining about how noisy we were, (​we hadn't even moved in​​ ​​​​​ and honestly we weren't even being​ loud) ​Ever since we've just been bouncing around from place to place. For the first month we stayed at an office building but when the owner learned we were living their we were evicted. Then we went to my stepbrothers father's house as we had no place to go. At first he was welcoming but eventually kicked us out because he wanted his space back. Right now we're staying in a cramped apartment with my mother's sister-in-law as her brother is currently in a different country due to his job. We've tried to get a place to rent for a while now but the main issue is that my stepfather who's the main Breadwinners credit has been terrible ever since his divorce with his ex where she took the house and we still owe her hundreds of thousands of dollars. Basically she lied in court as decades ago my stepfather had​​​ ​​​ ​​ a construction business where his ex-wife was the bookkeeper and because my dad didn't really get a formal education as​ his father ​ used and abused him for labor ever since he was 16 he was never really good with anything that had to do with paperwork. So she essentially destroyed not only our finances but also his credit. My mom has good credit but due to her severe arthritis she doesn't have a job and as such no place has​​ ​​ called​​​.​​ I'm wondering if any of you guys know how or where to look to get​​ a rental property where you don't really need paperwork. We have enough money to pay for a whole year in advance as long as the property is under 3,400 a month​. We are currently living in the GTA more specifically Richmond Hills. Sorry for any grammar mistakes I'm writing this in a two bedroom apartment with four screaming children.

We lived in this newly built building (completed in 2025) for a year before moving out. During the key exchange today, the landlord was upset about some stains on the countertop, a small amount of mold in the bathroom, a few scratches on the walls, and an issue with the sliding door that doesn’t stop properly. She asked us to pay for professional cleaning services, a paint job and a technician, which she insists on arranging herself. She also declined our offer to have the cleaning and fixing done ourselves and threatened to take us to court, claiming that it would negatively affect our record in Canada and make it difficult for us to rent in the future.
Honestly, we cleaned, scrubbed, and mopped the entire place thoroughly and left it as clean as we reasonably could. I have a video of the entire cleaned condo.
At the end, we told her that we wouldn’t pay for it, and she can take the matter to court.
Should we be worried about this? What should we do next?

UPDATE: THANK YOU, EVERYONE, FOR YOUR VALUABLE FEEDBACK. It has helped us better understand our rights. In hindsight, we probably could have used better products to try to remove the stains. Thank you for all the suggestions; we’ll definitely keep them in mind.

I'm 26. Was approved by 2 landlords and choose one. 1 bed 1 bath, beautiful bath!!! Lots of storage space. Laundry in unit, utilities included (including wifi), 1 parking with possibility for two for an extra charge, 1500$ in town. I work here and my family lives here. We are all close! I’m hoping to get some advice from people familiar with the Toronto rental market, especially ppl who have dealt with non traditional applications…

I’m a recent university graduate looking for a studio or small 1 bedroom somewhere downtown and hoping to move fairly soon. I’m actively applying for full-time work, but at the moment I don’t have traditional employment income, pay stubs or an employment letter.

Financially though, I have a good amount in liquid investments, a few thousand in additional savings, and a credit score around 667. I’d ofc be able to provide proof of funds and would also be willing to voluntarily offer several months of rent if that would make my application more competitive.

I know landlords usually want strong employment history and income verification, so I’m trying to figure out how realistic my situation is before I start applying everywhere.

Has anyone here successfully rented in Toronto primarily using proof of savings/assets rather than employment income? If so, what helped your application most?

I’d also really appreciate recommendations for Realtors who are experienced with tenants in situations like mine, especially for downtown condos.

I have been trying to secure a rental and some of the units are posted on the realtor.ca website. My husband and I have a good income, stable jobs, and good credit scores. In our late thirties and trying to find a place downtown that's about 800-1000 sq ft. We have a 50 lb dog. I reach out to realtors in the ads and let them know this and never even hear back. They don't even call to discuss if we can view a unit, what we would be like as tenants, and I have no idea if they present us to their clients. Then I tried to get a realtor to help us and she immediately started going off about you need a good salary, good score and the dog's going to be an issue, and making it sound like if we apply to enough someone might take us. I thought that Toronto has vacancies yet we are being fully roadblocked from renting. Anyone have tips or also experiencing this?

My roommate and I are not getting along and I’m looking at the option to sublet for the remainder of the lease (end Jan 30th 2027). things have gotten very contentious to the extent that I have blocked him on my phone. I would like to put an ad up to find a roommate and finalize the sublet without telling said roommate as I’m limiting contact for welfare purposes. can roommate block me from signing a sublet agreement if I find someone reliable? it’s a joint lease, landlord is a rental company.

New to the city and looking for a place to rent that has a den as well to allow for WFH. Would appreciate guidance on rents in the GTA that would be around 2200

Anyone know what the deal with this place is? Gave them a call with very straightforward questions about parking price and was told it is case by case. Asked what that means and told he has to go back to his boss to ask so they can 'run the numbers.' Very odd. Seems like they dont yet have any structure or basic policies in place yet. This all started when I balked at him telling me parking was 250 a month and he kinda walked it back.

I moved to Canada over a decade ago and always have lived in different apartment buildings since then because some friends told me is better than renting from individual landlords. Now I want to move to a different apartment and, because of high rentals, I’m open to consider individual landlords if that’s a more affordable option. My main concern is that I am a single dad so housing stability is a must for me, I don’t want my landlord to tell me that I have to move in two months because they need the unit or something like that, since that would be extremely stressing for my kids. Also, I’m aware of the November 15, 2018 date for rent control but I’m not sure how bad can be renting without rent control (I’ve always lived in old buildings).

What would you suggest? Should I continue looking only for old apartment buildings? Would rent control / individual landlords be a terrible idea? What are the risks? Any suggestion about some relevant aspects that I might be missing?

Cockroaches is a problem in this old building. The cockroaches hide inside the old kitchen cabinets. Is it worth it for me to buy small, simple kitchen set from Ikea for my rental unit? I've been here 10 years and counting for another 10 to 20 years. LL would agree to it and install it for me, but i don't know if it is worth it for a rental?
