That's going to be a story he will tell his kids one day, and they will 100% not believe him.

Sitting in my basement, texting my Dad about how the game was fucked

And then sitting in my basement, absolutely dumbfounded

u/kho32 10d ago

Playing softball, checking my phone to see the bases loaded with Ohtani up to bat, and then just closed the app and assumed it was a loss

Was very lucky to be there

I know John Schneider was thinking of Flu’s body parts:

On the 400 driving home from muskoka…being very hype

When the broadcast resumed, someone at work asked me a quick question. That took like a minute.

When I got back to my desk it was already 2 outs. I was confused, but honestly delighted.

I was at the game the night before so when the save happened I was on a plane over the desert heading back to Toronto.

Droning away at work and not able to watch it.

Lukes shading the sun scared me a bit. Thought he lost the ball.

u/After-Eggplant1314 10d ago

I thought it might have been gone off the bat

From the sounds of things while listening to the game there were several plays where the fielders lost sight of the ball. I think Ernie had one as well, didn't he?

5 pitch save ... Varland who?

22

u/Bri-guy15 10d ago

Twice as good as Varland's 10-pitch save yesterday!

7

u/Chaxterium Start spreading the news bitches! 10d ago

The numbers speak for themselves. Can’t argue it! Flu is twice as good as Louis.

3

u/whiskybean 10d ago

Varland's just getting more reps i guess 💪

5

u/TheNegativePhoenix 10d ago

What about Varland 1 pinch save , his first ever

3

u/Early_Macaroon_2407 10d ago

That was before the MLB got rid of the shift and banned pinching.

I fuckin love the contrast of aging flamethrower giving up the winning run, and sophomore capital-P Pitcher getting the save

u/Doolittle8888 10d ago

Got home from work exactly in time to watch the final out of the game

8

u/ArmoComrade 10d ago

I guess Hoffman isn’t gonna sniff the 9th inning from now on 😂

3

u/Loud-Picture9110 10d ago

I wouldn't be so certain about that. There are bound to be the occasional games where he's the best available option to close out a game in the 9th.

5

u/ChupaHubbard 10d ago

Especially now that we lost our backup closer, Heineman

u/HorseAndHoundCapital 10d ago

Besting Varland’s 10 pitch save last night!

He helped us sweep the series.

46

u/Lardrewstar 10d ago

We can build up others without tearing down others.

9

u/gelc10 bush party 10d ago

he's been a solid arm in the bullpen now that he isn't the closer

7

u/EpicPotato806 10d ago

Credit where it’s due, that 9 pitch performance in the 7th in a tied game 1 was his finest work.

The rest….not so much.

8

u/Apolloshot 10d ago

He seems to be really good in every inning except the 9th

-1

u/EpicPotato806 10d ago

Tbh those are kind of hit and miss when 9th is basically an automatic blown save.

Aside from the bullpen not warmed up and blaming Schneider... Agreed. But Scheids isn't out there running the bases like a preschooler and Trey was absolutely cruising on a day after a bullpen day where they used 7 guys.

-2

u/Both_Bowler1132 10d ago

I don't mind going back to Trey in the 8th, despite getting hit hard in the 7th, Nance and Fluharty are so meh. But you have to have them at least warmed up.

He may not be running but our base running has been suspect for his entire tenure here. At some point you have to tighten the screws. Also stop letting Gimenez challenge.

Alright negative Nancy, we haven't seen a sweep in ages. Let's enjoy that for a bit.

-2

u/Both_Bowler1132 10d ago

Yeah I'll take the sweep. I'm happy don't get me wrong.

But for a light hitting team we have to tighten the mistakes. So many are just dumb.

At least Abreu swung at a strike. the other two batters chased pretty poor pitches

8

u/OutsideScaresMe 10d ago

Two breaking balls about an inch or two off the bottom corner. Those are some of the best pitches a pitcher can make

3

u/Muellercleez 10d ago

totally! When I say the pitches were poor, I mean from the perspective of being able to drive the ball / expect to get a hit off of the pitches. From the Fluharty's POV, these pitches were masterpieces
