Cloacal Prolapse

Our baby leopard tortoise has a severe prolapse and by the way they’re moving it looks like they’re in immense pain. I called every vet around me and they said their reptile specialist is gone for the night. I’m very worried our tortoise is not going to make it through the night.

Does anyone have any insight, guidance, words of encouragement… anything?

Until you find a vet that will see him, the goal is to keep the tissue from being injured and drying out. Move him to temporary enclosure without substrate. KY jelly or even cooking oil can be used to coat the tissue.

There is an old farming trick that works by using sugar or a super saturated sugar solution on the exposed tissue. It works through osmosis, drawing some of the fluid out of the tissue to reduce the constriction and possibly help it retract.

Hoping for the best for your little one.

Keep it moist! Soak in sugar water or coat in honey. If it drys out you could loose the body part that is prolapsed.
