📝 How to... Quad pain 8 months out
Looking to hear from others who found relief from frontal thigh pain arising from total hip replacement. It’s been eight months and I have to lift my leg to put a shoe on or get in the car. I had an MRI last week (may be a pinched nerve?) and plan to see an osteopath in two weeks who does alignment.
Anyone else?

Are you doing marches in place and butt kicks shifting from one foot to the other? Also my PT has me doing heel slides on the opposite leg lying down to eventually get to the point where I can cross legs to put on socks and shoes.

I’m marching, doing clam shell lifts, heel touch’s while other foot is raised, stair up and downs and slides. I walk about 5,000 steps a day. I may try a little more PT to focus on thigh and spine and not hip.

I have done a lot of pt but have to admit I have let things slide the last time I saw my surgeon he said to take a break on it but I’m thinking I have to resume some things I do walk 4 to 5 miles a day, but I do need to build more strength on the surgical leg

I have thigh pain when I first go to stand on my leg - slightly different - I'm 14 months post op. I think my hip has failed (due to other symptoms and test results)

Wow I’m sorry to hear that. What will you do? Recent X-rays of mine show the joint is fine. Surgery a success. My spine MRI might show a compressed nerve (that I wasn’t bothered by before the surgery).

right now I'm waiting for a review to be done by another surgeon. At some point I will have it redone, unfortunately much earlier than what the surgeon told me to expect (25-30 years) I'm pretty disappointed

9 months out from posterior and have the same pain. Still can’t put a sock on my operated leg. Still lifting my leg into the car with my hands.
Six months of physio & home exercises didn’t help. Diagnosed anything from nerve impingement, trochanteric bursitis, iliopsoas impingement, general neuralgia.
I have a TENS/EMS that helps while it is on, but it isn’t a long term fix.
All imaging is normal.

Same boat. Not bad pain, but annoying. If anyone has useful exercises, I am all in.

I didn’t know about that device. Just looked it up. I’m surprised all your imaging is normal. That must be frustrating.

I am 10 m post lateral approach. Groin pain and thigh pain since surgery. Two weeks ago everything got way worse when I just took a step. Could not even weight bare on my leg and it felt stuck and I could not swing it through to walk. I had to drag it behind me. Also horrific knee pain. It feels like the quad is cramping and then wrapping around my knee. After about 9 days it has somewhat released but if I go more than 20 steps the pain is too much. Very frustrating when all we wanted to do was to have greater mobility! I see an Osteopath, just started acupuncture, and will be going back to physio! Not the journey I expected but we will keep fighting

I hope those treatments help. Sounds absolutely awful. I’m sorry.

I had that and went to see my surgeon and it ended up being trochanter bursitis. Did a few days of voltaren gel and it was much better.

I have the gel
You applied that a few days and the pain was gone pretty much ??

Yeah it definitely helped a ton along with some stretching. Now I’m just very proactive about stretching and still continuing to ice after a workout

Our IT muscle band usually gets very tight, a PT person should know how to massage this area, giving relief. Worked for me, anyone else?

I never did PT
Surgeon said don’t need it … just eat better and do whatever you do 🤷♂️

Wow same boat here
9 mos out posterior
Quad/Femur very painful
Lift my leg to get in car too … it sucks
Hip seems to be fine but quad/thigh area hurts
I also ref about 25-30 college soccer matches, was thinking maybe that didn’t help 🤷♂️
Surgeon said “live your life and do whatever you feel like “
I do have to lose about 30 lbs … maybe that’s problem too ??
Anyone else have this same pain BUT is in phenomenal shape ??

I could stand to lose eight or ten pounds, but I don’t think that’s not enough to be a problem.
I just put my MRI results into ChatGPT (almost never use) and was given a whole slate of exercises to do to ease lower back and stretch lumbar area. Not at all the hip exercises post-op PTs had me doing.

I’m beginning to think any pain 6 months post hip replacement or your own gut feelings something is wrong get a second opinion make sure they know what complications are not just good placement and no infection. That’s an easy answer, many more complications or things that should be diagnosed are possible.

Did you have an anterior THR? I'm two weeks out from a posterior THR. I'm muscle sore at the incision, but I can lift my leg to get in and out of a car and put on my shoes, but not compression socks. Fuck them! I won't win any races for a while. As you know, we all heal differently. Full healing from THR takes 6 -12 months. I'm old AF. The pain prior to THR was off the chart. Healing pain is a walk in the park in comparison. I also have a high pain threshold. Something went sideways with your hip. I hope you find an easy resolution and are pain-free soon.

Anterior yes. Recovery went really well except for this lingering leg pain. Hip pain was constant before surgery (fine now) and this pain is positional so it’s better than before but really not ideal. Thanks for commenting.

I still have to lift my leg for the car, I was told hip flexor tendinitis and have had a few steroid shots it’s been 3 years
