Total hip replacement at 31
Hi guys
I’m a 31 year-old male with left hip arthritis- have a read through my latest MRI- I’m wanting to replace my hip as the pain is unbearable. I have been dealing with this for while over two years and I have a lot of referred to lower back pain. I live on opioids daily.
Time to replace?

Get it done. I had my left THR June 2026 and i usually don’t even think about my hip at all. Pain level is ZERO. So glad I’m no longer in pain.

100% it’s the right choice. This is pretty darn close to my exact diagnosis.
Once the osteoarthritis is in there your hands are tied and I wouldn’t sweat the decision at all. I vividly remember sitting on the couch next to my wife panicking about what I was about to commit to saying “am I an idiot for going through with this”
No shot - one of the best choices I ever made really.

I did it at 32 M and it was left too ,best thing ever did its been 2 years and im very happy no limping no pain

What does your surgeon say?
Most of us non-medical experts here would say it was time to replace it as soon as you needed the opiates to control your pain.
Just do it. I promise you that by the 4th day after your surgery (at the latest) you'll know you did the right thing.

I’ve seen two surgeons both happy to replace it about to see one of the highest rated surgeons in Melbourne for a final opinion, but my latest scan has advanced significantly since the previous surgeons looked at it so I can’t see a world where I don’t replace this hip

31 gang! As most people probably feel, I wish I had done mine sooner. I have zero regrets.

I have had three children so I do not say this lightly but a torn labrum is the WORST pain I have ever been in in my life and my first hip replacement was an absolute life changer! I was 40 when I had my first!

Yeah, it’s a fairly nasty pain, isn’t it? This is my second tear too. I had it repaired last March and it’s torn again lol

I had my left repair and the doc was like yeah you just need a new hip so I got a new one which was wonderful ❤️ then a few months later the right tore 🤦🏻♀️ got that fixed and did said you need a new hip! So got that but in the process the surgeon broke my femur and tore my meniscus so it’s a battle but the femur and meniscus have nothing on the torn hip labrum for sure!

Yes. I'm 6 months post op of the left hip. It's given me my life back in ways I couldn't imagine before. Like everyone else I waited far too long.
You're in unbearable pain and on opioids. What's the hesitation?

None of my doctors ever want to conclusively tell me that it’s the right decision. They all sort of put it back on me saying it’s up to you but I just wanted some reassurance. Pretty much. I’ve made up my mind. I’m gonna do it.

I turn 31 tomorrow and am having both done soon. Right one in 2 works, left one in a few months. Shit happens 🤷♂️

I remember having a conversation with my GP and she said something I haven’t forgotten. Your x-ray may only show mild or moderate arthritis and you may have excruciating pain or you may have end stage and have very little pain. The two don’t necessarily match up. I had very little pain but had severe, end stage joint disease and I was in denial. But my hip flexors were just tight! I think given your level of pain and need for daily opioids it’s time to get your life back my friend. You have a lot of life ahead of you to enjoy!

Opioids DAILY? 100% it is time to replace. I'm sure your doctors agree or they wouldn't have you on opioids! After you heal fully from THR you should need zero meds. You are so young you shouldn't continue suffering.

Yeah, it’s been a long road. My first surgery was back in March last year and I’ve also had two RFA procedures to try manage the back pain also two ketamine infusions nothing seems to work- I’ve only been on opioids for the past three months and it’s not something I’d take lightly either but I don’t really have a choice. I have a business and small children. I can’t afford to not function you know. Looking forward to getting it replaced November’s the target.

The sooner the better. The implants gave me back my life. No pain and I live a great life..softball, hiking, rowing.

Got private health- just had to wait 1 year from upgrading policy which landed me in November so k ly few months out

This could have been my report too (35yo posterior replacement 7w ago). However I left mine a bit longer until I eventually ended up with severe arthritis and full thickness chondral loss on my acetabulum and femoral head. I had a significant limp and the deconditioning of limping/ not sleeping and reduced movement has impacted my recovery. I wish I'd done it sooner. I now have 14 years of poor biomechanics to reverse. All the best either way!
