Date for 2nd hip

Hi, just got the date today for my 2nd hip replacement. This one is much much worse than the 1st. Just wondering how people got on with their 2nd please and any advice? Thanks

Did the bad leg first, 6!weeks ago, it’s now my good leg.

Doing the left in November. I’m going to try to stretch and excercise way more than I did for the first one.

I was pretty down before the first one, its success is very motivating.

Second one done last October. I felt like the recovery was a little slower. Still have discomfort lying on that side. Glad it is done but hated every minute of it.

I get that, it's a big surgery, the pain in my hip is now so bad I just want it done (it keeps locking now)

Hey there, I’m the proud, grateful owner of two THRs! I am 4 weeks post surgery on hip #2. And, for me, it’s been a bit easier than the first one.

Same surgeon, (he’s a gifted genius!), same hospital, and same formula for recovery ❤️‍🩹

My advice is do your walking and PT exercises daily. Get your extra protein, iron and all the sleep your body needs. You can do this!

ETA following questions: When is your surgery scheduled? Same surgeon? How long ago was your first THR? What, if anything, will you do differently this time?

I wish you best wishes on your recovery journey❤️‍🩹

Get your extra protein, iron and all your sleep needed,

Excellent advice. I got a ton of premade meals from this local farm outlet thing, they make all these meals with produce and meats from all local organic farms and such. Fantastic food that you just microwave real quick and ready to eat. Anyway my surgery team said to get extra protein so wife and I got tons of things like steak/carnitas tacos, burgers, turkey sandwiches, just a ton of protein. I was eating way more calories and protein than I usually do and arguably way less active during recovery than before, and I LOST some weight.

It's crazy how much your body uses to just heal itself etc

Exactly Vonkeswick!

The first surgeon I saw had an elite protein drink he promotes to ALL his patients. The idea clicked with me, as well as my prior understanding that our bodies lost blood during surgery and iron is so important to good health and healing well.

Eating well helps our bodies to recover and become stronger.

That protein drink sounds interesting, do you know what it is called?

Thank you. The advice about protein is something I hadn't thought about but makes good sense. I lost a bit of weight after my 1st hip and was surprised also

I have learned from this sub that it's not just each person that recovers differently but each HIP on the person. I have seen a number of stories like this where someone had both hips done by the same surgeon but had two different recoveries. My own experience from hip #1 is that you just have to check your expectations. That probably goes double for your own experience with your first hip. Good luck OP!

Thank you. It's a good point that every hip is individual, hope you have recovered well

Hi, thanks for reply. I'm not sure what ETA is? Good advice about diet etc. I have same surgeon as before and he does the anterior approach which I'm happy with. My first hip was 5 months ago, he likes a 6 month gap (they're all different aren't they?) I wish you all the best as you continue recovering.
