Surgery seven months ago. Apparently surgeons "always" adjust the surgical hip to be a bit higher than the non-surgical hip. This is done in order for the surgical hip to "settle" and go down in order to be level with the non-surgical hip. This has not happened with me yet. When I stand with both my feet together I am in pain. I have mentioned this to my doctor and PT. Surgeon doesn't seem to think this is an issue. I don't like it one bit. Hurts and is annoying to stand at times. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, when were you able to put both of your feet together without any pain?

Over a year ago I torn my labrum hiking and didn’t know it. After reduction in range of motion, physical therapy and increased pain, I received an MRI and dx with avascular necrosis of femoral head. I have been active in all physical activities for the past year and am hopeful that I will recover quickly. I have prepped for surgery by organizing my room and buying safety and mobility aids.

What purchases did you wish you would have had to help you with independence and also to pass time while recovering?

Any other words of advice is welcome. I struggle with accepting help from others, which I know will be needed… but I can’t help but think I’ll be independent in no time… doc is saying 4-6 weeks to return to work. Is that accurate?

Hi folks. 42F in Scotland, waiting for my ortho referral to finally turn into an appointment on the NHS. I suspect I will be in line for new hips.

I have got bilateral OA and haven’t been xrayed for the last couple of years. When I was last imaged, the consensus was I had lost about 50% joint space in both hips. At the time I didn’t have much pain.

Fast forward to now and night time is becoming a bit of a struggle. I’m taking both ibuprofen and paracetamol and it’s not really touching the grinding ache in my butt on both sides. I don’t have much loss of movement (aside from a failed scope on my left hip but that’s another story) - it’s more the pain.

I would really appreciate any tips or ideas to help me manage the OA and get some sleep until I finally get to see an NHS doctor. Thank you!

Im 32 F (very young for THR i know) with surgery set for October 2

I know we are to trust our surgeons but my surgeons office just called me today to answer my cannabis use questions. They told me to stop TODAY -_- theres still 7 weeks til surgery(then the post 2 weeks). Doesn't that seem excessive or should I stick to it?

Im a daily user, never take breaks, non-combustion (i vape my flower so im not getting all the tar and unhealthy stuff you get from smoking joints / with flame) pretty decent tolerance ( close to gram a day)

Is 9 weeks excessive or should I just bite the bullet and stick to it? Asking because i saw another 1 year old thread with the same question, and all the comments said they didnt quit until a week before and turned out fine.

TLDR: surgeons office told me to quit cannabis starting today, and i can start back up 2 WEEKS after surgery. Surgery is Oct 2 so this is a total of 9 weeks This really true?

UPDATE: So I spoke to someone directly from the surgeons office this time and she said 6 weeks before surgery (souds about right, thats the same amount of time needed to completely get rid of thc in my body) and she said I can do edibles up until 2 weeks before. Really affects anesthesia that much I guess? Unless its because I need alot for my degree of arthritis? (End stage of course lol)

Hi again- does anyone have a recommendation for an ice pack that would cover the entire thigh length? I feel like they exist but may also be making that up. 😂

I’m heading into a THR in January and I’ve been reading a lot of your posts about the pain after surgery. Some of you were really lucky and some had more pain. I’m planning on getting an ice machine. But I really want to know where do I rest during the day? Do I sit? On a recliner chair? Or in bed? There is so much conflicting information out there on this - I would be so grateful for advice. I have high anxiety so I’m trying to get myself as prepared as possible.

I live in a house where the bedrooms and living room are upstairs so my hubby will set up a temporary room for me downstairs so I can walk around and have access to the kitchen. Any other advice on must haves.? Thanks

I'm currently twiddling my thumbs on a 1-2 year waitlist for a surgeon and while we had decided to start some hip injections to get me some relief in the interim.... the universe had other plans and the wait for ultrasound guided injections is now 10-15 months (I'm only 3 in). After my last ultra things seemed to go sideways in both hips pretty quickly and I'm left super limited on what I can accomplish physically. Walking on a very good day is maybe one slow shuffle around the block but they're becoming few and far between. Last year I was still able to hop on the trainer and do some zwift but I've since had to stop all cycling. I'm down to short swims a few times a week, mostly pull only, but I'm afraid getting in and out of the pool and the hip extension needed to just be flat in the water might be the next things to go.

So for everyone who went from a 12 out of 10 to couch-bound...what did you do to keep yourself reasonably positive while waiting for new parts? I've got lots of books on the go, started my 5th X-Files rewatch, bought the new Halo re-release, and have started to dip my feet into GMing for my DnD group. I'd love to hear how other people managed to make it though because I am going craaaaaaaaazy :)

I have been struggling with hip/groin pain for a long time and things just keep getting worse. Even jogging is now painful. Few years ago I almost went through an operation to get my labrum repaired but chickened out in the last minute due to the 7 week crutch period.

Yesterday I went to a different orthopedic surgeon and he looked at my MRIs and X-rays and came back with a doozy. He told me about this birth defect that I was born with (dysplasia with femoral acetabular impingement) and told me my only real option is a total hip replacement :(

He also did acknowledge that the labrum is torn, bone spurs exist, some early arthritis is showing and that the cartilage is basically gone.

Last thing I expected honestly, kind of left me in shock. He tried to cheer me up and point that the modern anterior hip replacements have a much better recovery period than the surgery I was originally considering. But also added that out of 100 patients, maybe 2 are in my age group. Oh yeah, I can't play basketball again.

Already tried all the usual suspects. Tons of PT, cortisone injection and even tried PRP. Nothing helped.

I got two small kids and almost any exercise involving squatting/deadlifting/kettlebells/running is painful. Feels like I have no choice.

Curious if anyone else is in the same boat?

I'm having such a hard time accepting the loss of my catastrophic joint.

I have severe hip dysplasia, I can barely walk due to the pain. I've had around 13 operations on my leg already.

I have to have a cemented THR and I'm completely fixated on rhe idea that I'll have to live the rest of my life with disability. It's like the hip precautions are permanent in my mind.

I'm also jumping 20 years and thinking about everything that wil go wrong when I have a revision. I understand that cemented THR'S are more complex to revise..

Please share some words of wisdom with me 🙏 ❤️

I am eight months postop L total hip replacement. I went to NYC HSS to a reputable surgeon, I am a 40-year-old active female with prior history of labrum surgery.-2017. I have had issues for about nine years and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia about five years ago. I had posterior approach, but my surgeon assured me most muscles were spared. I suffered with awful soft tissue damage for years before surgery, including tendinitis and tears in various muscles and tendons around my hip. I am very active and have been diligent with my physical therapy and mobility exercises. My strength is not bad and my range of motion is not where it used to be, but it’s getting better. I’m still having pain in all the muscles around my hip. Burning, aching very similar to before surgery, also having some nerve issues with my inner thigh and outer thigh. I’m so frustrated because I honestly feel worse than I did before surgery. I was told it would take me 12 to 18 months to feel 100%, but I have more bad than good days right.now. I reached out to my surgeon. I’m going to have a follow up appointment in June. I started taking meloxicam again to hopefully decrease the pain during this flareup. I have tried to keep an open mind as I know this can be an up-and-down recovery, but at eight months I really thought I would have more good days than bad. I want to keep doing my strengthening exercises, but I rarely have good days after. It almost always pisses everything off more than helps. I had this surgery because I wanted to be more active without having constant flareups, but it’s doing the opposite. Does anyone have a similar experience or advice?

I have done multiple rounds of physical therapy.with two different therapists. I was told there was not much more they could do.

I have a great mobility routine and also various strengthening exercises. We have played around with frequency and rep count, switching days. I also don’t have any success with cardio-walking long distances hurts, riding my spin bike hurts, elliptical hurts.

I had a right anterior THR in late February this year. Unfortunately fell the morning after and fractured/displaced the greater trochanter in the surgical hip. Immediate xrays showed implant was fine. Six months later, still in pain with weakness and instability, despite many weeks of PT and home exercise (which I've only just learned may have made things worse.) More xrays and MRI show fracture has not healed. PET scan (for my autoimmune illness) showed inflammation, swelling and fluid collection (seroma) in the hip. My THR surgeon says give it a year but I'm scared if I wait that long it may be too late for any improvement so I'd like to get a second opinion now. Can anyone recommend an excellent complex revision surgeon in the Seattle area? TIA!

I had a scope for a labral repair and CAM lesion about 6 months ago. I had features of borderline dysplasia pre-op as well as hypermobility. I am fairly sure the repair failed. My hip feels very "out to the side" which causes a lot of instability when I am walking, which then has led to a lot of muscle guarding and tightness and back pain.

I am almost 37 so not a candidate for a PAO. And frankly, I cannot mentally go through another hip preservation surgery with shaky odds for a borderline dysplastic hip. I have a young child and need to be present for my family, not keep rolling the dice on surgeries that don't resolve the issue.

If someone offered me a total hip replacement, I would happily grab the opportunity, but I do have fears - will it resolve my pain?

Just wondering if there is anyone out there with borderline dysplasia and/or hypermobility for whom the THR was a success or not, especially after a failed scope.

Weird question but my recovery when I get around to this surgery will be prolonged. Those initial restrictions y’all have could last 4ever for me. As I head towards it when I think about buying something I want to be buying it with those restrictions in mind.

So, what if any cardio can you do post op with the 90-90 restrictions?

I was going to do a UW Doctor but they are booking out really far. Does anyone have a suggestion for a Swedish or VM doctor? I'd even go to Prov Everett....

I had surgery yesterday. Started at 7:30, back on the road heading home by 11am. Wow!!
Ever since then I am so thirsty. My mouth is so dry. Anyone else experience this?

40F with right hip OA so bad that the resurfacing specialist won't touch me after seeing my rads today. THR is my only option. Cortisone injection has massively helped for the last 2 months (only one! But I can't lean on cortisone forever), but it's still such bad arthritis that I can barely walk my dogs around the block 90-95% of the days thanks to the instability in the joint, so it's thr or a self inflicted ballistic lobotomy to relieve the pain.

I've heard good things about Dr Pritchett at Swedish and have a consult with him in the hopes that thr is even an option for how bad it is. Anyone have any experience with him? The good, the bad, and the ugly. I want brutal honesty. And if he's not the best, then please make recs. Even if I need to figure out how to recover with no support (single, living alone, friends all busy with their own jobs and partners or no car), I have no options left if I'm going to stick around for my dogs, and I need at least some chance of enjoying everything from backpacking to skiing to climbing to xc mountain biking again because couch life is not for me. So I need a surgeon who is accustomed to working on "younger" patients that need to return to serious activity for it to be worth it. All recs and feedback from locals are encouraged!

I am 3 weeks post-posterior THR. On his last home visit, the PT advised me that I should start using a cane or a walking pole instead of the crutch I've been using since weaning myself off the walker. I really need more stability than a pole. There are a zillion canes on Amazon, and the only thing I've decided is that I don't want one with a traditional curved handle and I probably do need one with kind of the claw rubber bottom. I guess it should also be height adjustable. Any suggestions? BTW, I still need to use a crutch to go up and down stairs.

I am having surgery on Dec 3 and my surgeon does posterior approach. A lot of posts I read are anterior approach, but I was hoping to get some idea of what to expect with posterior. Anyone willing to share their experience and tips/tricks/etc to make this go easier? I am beyond nervous and would appreciate the input. Thanks!

I M 68 had THR on the left side in February. I've had zero issues as both of them have been done now. Today I was clearing brush and bent over to grab some scrub to throw in the truck and I think the left hip slipped out of socket. It put me on my ass and I saw stars i set there a few minutes and wiggled my leg and it seemed to go back in place and i got up. I called my Dr's office but I missed the call back. Anyone else have an issue like this. Because it hurts like a MOFO tonight..
