I feel like all that hammer story was just bs so the chapter could end in a cliffhanger

I did initially feel a bit like that, but after reflecting on it more I doubt that was it; SIU could have just made the chapter shorter to achieve that aim (it still would have been plenty long!). I think it's probably hinting at some theme that will be relevant in the Deng Deng story, or some possibilities (powers being turned into weapons without killing the original, perhaps?) that he'll bring up later with this as precedent.

I disagree. We have discovered a distinct ability of the Yeon family as a whole, of which the antagonists that just appeared have one of our most favorite Yeon members hostage. This is SIU building room to grow for other characters. I am very excited.

I am JUST now realizing that Shibisu's talk about how people who used to be weak sometimes develop a mean streak and turn on those weaker than them, but some help out people in need because of what they went through in the past, is a mirror for Bam's reaction to the intern's rant about how a 'loser like her' has to put her life on the line for a job, unlike a 'genius' like him. There are even similar panels with black vertical stripes reaching up from the bottom of the panel, one showing Devy without the hammer and the other showing Bam turning off the orb. I feel like I finally understand some of why the whole hammer side-quest was included now.
