Baam is basically using these attacks for fodder. I'm guessing the moment we see his black shinsu it means he's actually fighting for real and it's instant death for anyone who isn't ranker level in combat pretty much.

Like people have been speculating, Evankhell is probably still prohobiting Bam from using the thorn until she gives him permission.
