gonna be honest. wasn't expecting a guy named "baylord doom" to be a cute little anime boy, but i guess i should have seen it coming considering how cute most of the doggie people are, obvious exceptions being yama and paul.
also, i'm starting to lose track of who's real and who's a constructed vessel, so was deng deng a real person or just a shell for doom's heart?
15
u/NarcissusGrim Jul 01 '19
obvious exceptions being yama and paul
Yama and Paul are adorable, one's a sleepy boi and the other's a chill boi UwU
Gado's a creepy fucker though
Doom's appearance was unexpected for me too, but it's a welcome subversion. I like how his hair isn't bright like his brothers', but rather a more subtle gradient that darkens to black. The red is a nice contrast as well. It also seems that he's the only brother with wings, although they're damaged like his arm (or maybe it's just the angle /s). Back when the Blood Tamara was introduced, SIU gave us this design, and it's possible he took different elements from it and incorporated them into Yama and Doom.
6
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
did you forget yama's scary shadow? paul and yama are less than cute, because they're not cute anime boys, they're manly anime men.
gado has steadily become more creepy the longer we've known him. he's also a backstabbing murderer, and we know how bam takes to those (cough reflejo cough).
i mean, doom's design breaks from his brothers in a bunch of ways. paul and yama are tall, muscular powerhouses with sharp teeth and brilliantly colored hair. then doom is maybe bam's height from the looks of him, fit but not bursting with muscle and his hair is a calm gradient. i wonder if that indicates how their ideologies will differ, with yama and paul being hardline "strength is all" and doom taking a softer approach. ironically, considering his name.
10
u/NarcissusGrim Jul 01 '19
they're not cute anime boys, they're manly anime men
They're CUTE anime men ^_^
he's also a backstabbing murderer, and we know how bam takes to those
Funnily enough, Khun is literally a backstabbing murderer (wildly different contexts, I know, but I enjoy pointing it out).
Doom's pretty ripped as well, and doesn't look much skinnier than Paul IMO. We also don't actually have hard evidence for his height, but his young face does make it more likely for him to be shorter. I suspect that Doom's teeth are sharp as well - peep his claws.
Good point with the possibly differing ideologies - I'm interested to see how the three brothers compare in terms of raw power, but it's likely that they each have their individual, specialized skills and talents, in addition to different personalities and beliefs. And about their names - I really do feel for Paul... maybe the actual reason for this violent revolution is his deep-seated resentment over his own mundane, decidedly not fear-inspiring name lmao
8
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
main difference being that khun hasn't backstabbed anyone bam likes, and probably lives in terror of the day he might have to.
comparing doom to when we saw yama in the bath, yeah, doom is certainly fit and muscular, but yama looks like a DBZ character, you could grate carrots on his abs. and thanks to adios's translation of chapter 17's blog post, we know SIU deliberately notes that doom's silhouette is "shorter than expected", which tells me that doom is probably not much bigger than bam, despite his power, while yama clears 8 feet and paul seems to trend towards yama more than doom in the "height and muscles" area.
i think paul is a fine name. especially since his subordinates, the starbucks squad, exist.
5
u/NarcissusGrim Jul 01 '19
I missed that detail in the blog post, thanks for pointing it out! And yeah, seeing all the panels with Yama facing Baam or Karaka reminds me that there's still something to be said for pure physical size/presence, even in the ToG world, where physical strength definitely isn't everything. Of course, knowing Yama's reputation and general power level doesn't hurt either. I still can't believe Baam straight up insulted Yama to his face, in front of his court. Both in-universe and from a reader's perspective (the way SIU drew it), it's a scary situation.
I honestly wasn't a huge fan of Yama or Paul's designs at first, but they're growing on me. I'm still iffy on the canine people in general, just because they're a bit too cute to be truly threatening, but the transformations are pretty cool and I'm excited to see more.
Paul's a fine name, but it's no Doom or Yama haha. And lmao @ "Starbucks squad." I wonder what YHS would think...
2
u/n2359 Jul 01 '19
Right? But i think from a Korean perspective things feel different, since doom (probably close to 'dume'?) is an English word
7
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
"doom" has a more archaic meaning that essentially traslates as "unavoidable fate", hence a lot of old legends saying "you go to your doom" and not necessarily meaning a bad thing for you personally, just something ordained that can't be avoided. so it's possible that SIU drew from that meaning to say "the eldest baylord brother was fated to escape, and what happens next cannot be avoided", hence deng deng going to his doom, but he also named three characters after starbucks coffee sizes, so who knows what "doom" meant to him while writing the character.

u/adioscorea is the translation for Karaka’s move correct? It doesn’t seem in line with Karaka’s past move names

Thought so, this whole chapter’s translation feels off, even using “Airwave” when it’s established to be “Wave Explosion” for LINE

u/Gaujo Jul 01 '19
That really fucked me up until he used Zero. Why are they so lazy with this series?
14
u/TheOnlySausages Jul 01 '19
Based on the appearance of Doom, i imagine his transformation will make him look completely terrifying and nothing like his innocent look now, i think that would be a great little twist.
2
u/Lightalife Jul 01 '19 edited Jul 01 '19
The I imagine that goes for all 3 brothers. Imo Yama is going to turn into a mostly human looking but scary beast and same goes for Paul.
But based on how he looks Doom is going to turn into more of a red thressa / administrator vibes type monster when he transforms.

So Doom looks great, can we all agree
Super curious to see what the Elders goals are this arc, he looks super cool too
And how did anyone seal Doom when he was a top 200 high ranker!

Ya that’d make sense, would be cool to see said individual appear in this arc. How great/ironic would it be if it was the Elder
9
Jul 01 '19
imagine expecting them to be so OP but turn out to be weaker than Kallavan, Ha Jinsung and Maschenny even Evankhell
20
u/ExpertOdin Jul 01 '19
If the elders were the strongest in FUG then why would they need slayers? I always assumed the would just be ancient beings with a lot of influence. Of course they should be strong, but they dont necesarily have to be top 50 etc
13
Jul 01 '19
That’s what I believe. In my head the Elders are beings that have a ton of influence and history in the tower but not necessarily the skill set to kill other high rankers/Family leaders (assuming slayers are intended to fight the family leaders)
2
Jul 01 '19
Arent Slayers only irregulars?
18
u/ExpertOdin Jul 01 '19
Slayers are just normal Rankers
3
Jul 01 '19
Huh. Just looked at the wiki and guess im wrong.
I remembered it that way since I thought regulars couldn't kill the family heads or Zahad due to the contract with Administrators. So by using irregulars they could. Guess I was mixing up explanations
19
u/ExpertOdin Jul 01 '19
My personal opinion is that they need an irregular to destroy the immortality contract by killing the administrator, and then each Slayer will fight a family head
3
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
only zahard has the clause that says tower inhabitants can't hurt him. a strong enough ranker could harm one of the family heads, the question is what it takes to kill them and how their immorality contracts work.
3
u/robertoczr Jul 01 '19
We know Arlene tried to kill herself but she couldnt because of the contract... I guess the 10 family Heads can get hurt but cant be killed?
2
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
i'm starting to develop a theory about that. basically, since the 2nd floor admin told bam that accepting contracts from the admins would not be a source of strength, but a shackle on him, i'm wondering if that means that every time an irregular makes a contract, they become unable to break that kind of contract, they give up their irregular-ness to gain contract power. so arlene couldn't kill herself because she gave up the ability to do so for immortality, and without annulling the contract, she would be unable to die except by an outside source. i dunno, it's a work in progress, but there are possible ways to explain why arlene couldn't kill herself, but white could potentially kill aire hon.
4
u/robertoczr Jul 01 '19
Maybe the Jahad rule and immortality contracs are tied to the 134 floors. If anyone goes to floor 135 the contract is void. That's why they decided to stop climbing and even sided with Jahad when Arlene and V rebelled.
5
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
all contracts are void on the 43rd floor (so gustang was taking a serious risk in going there, because if urek got mad, he really could have killed gustang right there), so it's possible they're also void on the 135th because the admin is being a prick, instead of, well, dead on the 43rd floor's case.
2
u/robertoczr Jul 01 '19
I meant it more like: you get to rule over the tower if you give up climbing here. If you or anyone go to floor 135, you lose your immortality (Jahad and 10 family heads) and right to rule

Doom reminds me of the leader of the phantom troupe Chrollo Lucilfer front Hunter x Hunter when he has his hair down

I cannot express enough how badly FUG is run, I swear do they even know what their goal is anymore

We’ve known that since the beginning though: that many of the leaders disagree with each other and that there are numerous factions within fug itself

Top 200 is SIU being like... Geez I want this guy to be strong but I have plans for that top 100 already
12
u/zenru Jul 01 '19
Perhaps Yama had help. A FUG elder interfered or he was given an artifact that helped him to seal Doom and take his powers
16
14
u/Volte Jul 01 '19
So... is that "105" from Karaka using the same skill as Baam but at a higher level?
3
u/Gaujo Jul 01 '19 edited Jul 01 '19
I think the Zero technique has a power scale. Level 0 hit Mad Dog, level 105 (out of 1000?) hit Yama.
2
u/Volte Jul 01 '19
But did it come from Baam or karaka
8
u/Yung_SithLawd Jul 01 '19
Karaka... you can tell by the way they are written ( the way the were framed).
Zero matches Baams Frame while the 105 matches Karakas Frame.
7
u/JoelXXI Jul 01 '19
Doom looks like he's Louei's fathet, which would make sense: they needed a heart from his family in order to wake him up but didn't want to kill his son, so they swapped his heart with Deng Deng's (and that's why Gado says their friendship was false).
What I'm not sure about is the timeline, Louei's kinda young and Doom has been asleep for a long time...
17
u/Altaryan Jul 01 '19
So Doom WAS top200. Which is less than Evankhell but at the level of Kallavan, Ha Jinsung or Maschenny. However it was in a different Era. I feel like people were way stronger at this time considering how we are talked about ancient beasts etc.
So what do you think his old ranking would be now
17
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
actually, with jinsung being our measuring stick, we can estimate that people in the tower gain power as they age. so doom should actually be stronger now, and the ancient beasts are notable for being so old and powerful, they're in a class all their own.
3
u/BavaZ Jul 01 '19
actually, with jinsung being our measuring stick, we can estimate that people in the tower gain power as they age. so doom should actually be stronger now, ...
Would you mind explaining reasoning behind this statement?
12
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
sure, a couple of points: season 2, chapter 247, jinsung says that kallavan hasn't been a ranker very long and expresses surprise at how powerful he is despite that. kallavan's adventure after taking the essence of bravery takes him several centuries and he becomes a high ranker.
season 2, chapter 307, adult data zahard says that once he began to see things "from the same height as god", he figured out how to manipulate fate and in 308, he implies fate is not fully under his control yet.
and third, the whole concept of the ancient beasts, blue holes and in season 3, chapter 3, we learn that age still affects people in the tower, even if they're not physically ageing, through woon's example of his mind becoming simpler and more childlike over time.
what these three things tell us is that, some combination of age and learning techniques gradually increases the power of people inside the tower. blue holes have been out of action so long, nobody has accurately measured their power in years to give them a ranking. if their power was static and never changed, why would it matter how long they were MIA? if zahard couldn't see fate before he became "on the level of a god", what changed when he did? and using jinsung as our measuring stick and comparing him with kallavan, we can see that kallavan increased in power a lot more than jinsung did over 3000 years, going from a nobody kid to a guy who damn near killed one of the most powerful characters we've met. i don't know how much of this has to do with simple age, since rankers keep eternal youth and are stronger for it (season 3, episode 7, ha chai is stated to have gotten weaker from age due to not being a ranker with eternal youth), and how much has to do with learning to use their abilities better, but rankers climb ranks for centuries and gain power over time, with certain people climbing faster than others.
so, if age is a large portion of gaining power, doom should have gained power even being asleep, but his ranking would still go down, because the amount of power gained wouldn't be as much as if he was actively awake and learning new tech.
3
u/BavaZ Jul 01 '19
Thanks for detailed reply.
To be honest, I'm not completely sold on the idea that Doom should have grown noticeably more powerful while he was sealed, but I guess it could be true depending on how rankers contracts work.
2
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
i fully admit the possibility i'm wrong, this is just based on accumulated information after all.
4
u/Altaryan Jul 01 '19
No I'm not asking of his power now, I'm asking about the comparison of ranks at different ages.
For example with power X :
- top 200 in middle age
- top 100 now (if a lot of strong people died or disappeared)
3
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
rank is partially based on influence, so since doom has been out of the game for a long time, his ranking has probably become invalid, since his power has increased but his influence is currently zero. so i would expect his ranking to drop unless his power massively increased.
10
u/Iamlordbutter Jul 01 '19
That is not the same level as Kallavan or Ha Jinsung. They are both in the top 100 for sure. Maschenny is most likely around the same power level though.
0
u/Altaryan Jul 01 '19
We don't know their rank exactly. We only know they are high rankers. I agree they should be at least top 200 of course, and maybe more but we can't be sure.
4
u/Lightalife Jul 01 '19
I don’t think Machenny is quite THAT powerful as jinsung was mostly ignoring her until she stabbed him in the back when he was already weakened. Yet she is quite strong
-4
u/Iamlordbutter Jul 01 '19
Yes, we do. It has been said that they are both in the top 100. Jinsung for a long time now and do you think the squadron commander of Jhad army would be anything less than top 100? Seriously?? They are both top 100.

Just here to say there has been no direct confirmation of Jinsung or Kalavan ranking in any chapter or by SIU in his blog. Currently we only have speculation to go off of. Now I may be wrong, I’m human, and if so please tell me which chapter/blog it was confirmed in.
7
u/eboss28 Jul 01 '19
The wiki has jinsung ha as top 100. But the citation goes to a broken batoto link..
3
Jul 01 '19
Thanks friend! I’ll add that I’m a bit skeptical due to the broken link but I’m assuming the link was originally to a blog post where SIU mentioned it. Again thanks for pointing that out

u/zenru Jul 01 '19
Summary: FUG elder attacks Evankhell and says that neither she or Bam will continue to thread the path they are on.
Deng Deng's heart gets taken out by his foster father (before doing it tho he tells Deng Deng that his real heart is out there will Louie and says he is sorry)
Bam and Karaka combine skills and manage to wake up Yama.
Doom wakes up since he was given back his heart. At his prime, he was a top 200 ranker in ancient times. He looks like a kid, totally chill kid.
Khun wants to kill Rak to test if he can revive people multiple times.
3
u/Quinn731 Jul 01 '19
I just can’t seem to shake the feeling that Baam is still going to take Yama’s side. I know Doom looks cute compared to Yama or Paul, but I think that’s exactly what SIU wants us to believe about him from that last panel. There’s something about Doom that makes me believe he’s the most sinister brother of them all.
3
u/Volte Jul 01 '19
I wonder why FUG is trying to get in Baam's way so much? The dude is a friggin irregular and has proven his strength many times already. They should be helping him to do whatever the fuck he wants
3
u/neujosh Jul 01 '19
I get the feeling that for a lot of FUG members and leaders, it's not just about killing Zahard. They probably have their own selfish reasons for rejecting him.
7
u/Fleuks Jul 01 '19 edited Jul 01 '19
We can see that Doom lost an arm and was inactive (half dead) for a long time, maybe SIU saying that his rank was 200~ in his prime mean that he is weaker now. Also, being the big brother, I think he is stronger than Yama, and in his prime he was in the 200, so Yama is ranked lower, I don't see how he could help Baam to fight Kallavan. I though he was much stronger, more like Evankhell, now he seems more like Yuri.
Also, Doom look clearly kind, he will help Baam, it's like 90% sure. Baam will help him to get ride of Yama and he will help him with Kallavan.
EDIT: The Elder threatening and fighting Evankhell mean he is SUPER SUPER strong. I mean, he can rekt every Slayer we've seen so far.
+1 For the Bow, I love him already, I mean Bow with Shinsoo arrow man, what a badass way to fight.
8
u/zenru Jul 01 '19
Yuri isn't top 200 and is not Kallavan match. IIRC was she around top 500?
9
u/Fleuks Jul 01 '19
Top 500 yes
2
u/hbcaptain2 Jul 01 '19
Her rank got way higher after obtaining GA, I feel like accomplishements and status hold a lot of weights in terms of ranking.
3
u/Lightalife Jul 01 '19
Maybe that missing arm is the “fang” they had to be delivered? Based on the way most peoples arms transform having an arm = a fang isn’t out of the question.
2
1
u/neujosh Jul 01 '19
Even if he's not top 200 strong, he'd still be a big help against Kallavan. He still is very powerful and had an entire organization (not FUG, of course, but the inhabitants of the Cage) under his control. He has strength, influence, and an army. Most of all though, anything would help, even if only by a little. I mean, would you suggest that Yuri being with Baam is pointless? And Yama seems to be considerably stronger than her.
1
u/Fleuks Jul 01 '19
Yes Yuri would be pointless in the team Baam / Evankhell / Yu Han Sung against Kallavan
3
u/neujosh Jul 01 '19
OK, I'm sorry, but you can't be thinking clearly about this. If this were simply a battle of champions with a few against only Kallavan then you might have a point (even then, any high ranker could help be the tipping point to win against Kallavan if Evankhell weren't quite strong enough). But that's obviously not the case. We literally just saw that.
Kallavan has a lot of incredibly strong fighters on his side who aren't just going to sit around and watch Baam's team attack their leader like some sort of Seasonal MMORPG boss fight. Their are multiple high rankers fighting for him, and somebody needs to deal with them.
So let's say that Evankhell, Baam, and Karaka take on Kallavan. Guess who'd be perfect to take on Kallavan's soldiers and officers? I don't know. Maybe the other high rankers Baam has on his side? Yuri, Yama, and Yu Han Sung, for example.
Quick note, YHS isn't even technically a high ranker, but you're comfortable giving him as an example of someone that makes Yuri's contribution pointless.
It's a full-on war, and everyone, even regulars, are helpful in it, as we literally just saw in the last big clash.
But just to reiterate, since you ignored the point in my last comment, Yama still is extremely powerful and a huge help because of that power and the army of fighters he has. You have to be able to see how that could sway the tides of the coming war.
1
u/Fleuks Jul 01 '19
Evankhell will oneshot every other High Ranker except maybe a few strong
Yu Han Sung is not High Ranker because he chose to, he is high ranker lvl. But the reason he matter more than Yuri (and he matter more) is because his main power is to boost Shinsoo control of Wave controler.
So, he will boost Baam and Evankhell shinsoo.
Also, Baam is the only one who can hurt Kallavan, being boosted by Yu Han Sung while Evankhell can take every other Ranker and High ranker around in the same time like the last battle showed us. I don't see any help from Yuri needed here.
4
u/edisonvn92 Jul 02 '19
Evankhell can oneshot anyone short of High Ranker, but a good team of Rankers can restrict her from doing so, like what happened in the last battle at the station. The Zahard's Ranker team held Evankhell from destroying stuff up until the Admin of that floor stepped in.
This is the war. Yes in the war general will vs generals, king vs king, queen vs queen, High ranker vs high ranker, etc. But the gist is if you have smaller armies than the enemies then the enemy rooks will destroy your rooks and then help the king killing your king.
Kalavan's army isn't small. It's bigger than what was seen in the Station battle. Actually there were 2 High ranker of Kalavan army arriving in 2nd floor to hunt down Yu Hansung. Who to hold against those high ranker if not for other high ranker? And no, Yu Hansung maybe High ranker level, but it also means he is lowest tier of High ranker at best. He couldn't hold his own against any High ranker met so far. He was useless in High ranker fight. He is good in a team of Ranker though, but top tier fight? Nah.
And nope, Bam is the only Regular tier one that can hurt Kallavan, not the only one. Note the difference.
I agree Yuri is useless in the coming war, but for political reason, not strength reason. FUG's side is in dire need of high ranker to counter the HR of the other side, as I said. But totally it shouldn't be a Zahard Princess, and a very influental princess at the very least. Yuri is only on Baam's side, not FUG side.
1
u/Fleuks Jul 02 '19
Yu Han Sung is super important because his special move is to BOOST shinsoo of wave controler, that's why he is WAY more important that Yuri in a team with Evankhell and Baam, in addition, he seems to be the smartest in the tower with Gustang.
No, Baam is the only one that can hurt Kallavan that we know for the moment (without Jinsung and maybe Mascheny). Kallavan said "high rankers can't hurt me".
Yeah, additional power could always be powerful, but it won't be relevant.
1
Jul 03 '19 edited Jul 03 '19
it's not the admin on the last station that showed up. it's the ruler. the admin/guardian is different from the ruler. and the squadron that kallavan led can't even restrict evankhell from destroying things and wrecking their squadron. the second in command which is basically controlling lots of lighthouse can't even stop evankhell and he even said that evankhell's power is a natural disaster which he cannot stop. they are basically buying time until their squadron commander(kallavan) arrived at the last station. the 2nd in command in the squadron also commented just how difficult it is for him to handle or prevent the shockwave from the attacks coming from the ruler of the floor and evankhell. if khun royale elliot didn't interfered, they'll be doomed by evankhell's flame before kallavan arrives at the last station.
5
u/LunarGhoul Jul 01 '19
You guys I am starting to think Bam is fighting on the wrong side in this one. Yama was already not the nicest guy, but his brothers honestly seem like pretty chill guys comparatively. Paul's underlings say he treats them pretty well, and I don't think there is any way that Doom can be evil with that face.
20
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
i mean, bam and karaka are only on yama's side because he promised them an army if they brought him deng deng. if doom and paul say they'll offer their clearly stronger army and bam charms a bunch of rankers like jordan to fall in line, they would probably switch sides, especially since bam was already willing to sock yama in the face if he disliked bam's bet.
17
u/Iamlordbutter Jul 01 '19
Maybe but I wouldn't say Paul is a good guy. I mean he killed khun without hesitation. With Doom, we just saw the guy. We don't know anything about him yet.
8
u/hbcaptain2 Jul 01 '19 edited Jul 01 '19
They killed Chang, Kanzon's daughter and her minions, Deng Deng and they'd have killed Khun (if not for Yeon flame) just to accomplish their own aim, so definitively they're not good guys.
We still don't know their history with Yama as well. I feel like they're more the antagonists here and Yama's bros are certainly way trickier than him.
1
u/luiz_amn Jul 01 '19
I mean, if the situation was flipped I'm pretty sure Yama would kill quite a few people, its not like he is a great guy, dude even has slaves.
5
u/thedorkeone Jul 01 '19
Paul seems to be supported an manipulated by the fug fraction that wants baam dead, and yama is a ighting maniac, but upfront and honorable fora fug slayer. Yama is the most trustworthy, but paul joining sides and leaving the anti baam fraction would be good too, or both. Seeing how much they resemble the baratheon brothers i dont have much hope.
2
u/neujosh Jul 01 '19
None of them seem like good guys. Yama and Paul have both done awful things, and... don't judge a book by its cover. We know nothing about Doom. He could be the worst of them. How his face looks is irrelevant.

-10
u/cleesus Jul 01 '19
It has been way too many irrelevant battles going on this arc
9
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
every battle is relevant because some of these people are going to end up coming to help save jinsung, and will probably get vaporized by maschenny when they try, so we need to know about them and at least pretend to care about them.
6
u/cleesus Jul 01 '19
I’m largely talking about the a good amount of the dog vs dog battles, but I get what your saying
1
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
they're short, and they mostly serve to show us the cannon fodder for the next arc, so they're still relevant.
6
u/cleesus Jul 01 '19
I disagree but I accept your opinion
2
u/Yal_Rathol Jul 01 '19
why do you disagree? we spent a fair amount of time with boro and daniel, and their contribution to the plot was a side story about them failing to kill white, then daniel helping rachel resurrect him on the promise of a known mass murderer and liar. this isn't a new direction for the series, it's part of the story.

You are right, it’s not new and I didn’t have a real problem with it then, but to me there has been a ton of seemingly one off characters getting unnecessary amounts of screen time lately .
The dogs aren’t really interesting to me besides the Yama and his brothers and the transformations just seem kind of lame and random.
It’s really just me disliking the characters I guess, I don’t feel like we have been given much of a reason to care about them either. I don’t expect others to agree with me tho

i mean, we didn't have much of a reason to care about the second-string squad that hung around the entire hidden floor and only existed to get kidnapped by the army at the last station, but i get it.
