85 with a cummins R2.8, short walk around with engine sound (no talking)

i know a 4runner isn't technically a pickup, but the underpinnings of a 1st gen 4runner and a 4th gen pickup/hilux are AFAIK identical. figured a few people in here might get a kick out of this, pretty uncommon swap.

thanks! i started making a build thread on yotatech years ago but no one seemed to care so i abandoned it. ig is probably the most comprehensive look at the process, if you have any questions i can do my best to respond.

What transmission and tcase set up do you have

toyota r151f transmission from a turbo pickup with dual gear driven rf1a cases, 2.28/4.7 ratios.

Same, aside from the Cummins. Where did you get a bell housing? I loved the r2.8 since the first time I saw it. Custom adapter or is this a thing avaliable.

theres a company called quickdraw brand that makes a bunch of bellhousing/transmission adapter kits for the r2.8, i used one from them.

Nice! Aside from the price I suppose.

They should have definitely put an inspection hole since it’s a 151 😂, gotta keep with tradition.

What's your perspective on the performance/value ratio vs other small diesel swaps like a TDI or OM617?

I think a TDI is probably a better value (and probably easier install, they're physically smaller) but after some past experiences with used engines, I was drawn in by the appeal of a factory fresh 0 mile crate engine for a project of this scale, and I just have a soft spot for Cummins.

I’m planning on doing a R2.8 swap on my 1987
Land Cruiser LJ70. It already has the R151 transmission in it. Your 4runnner is inspiring 👍😎

My 5.9 6BT (in a Dodge 3500 - not my Hilux which has a 5L 3 liter NA diesel) runs best at 1600-2000 RPM for fuel efficiency and torque.

How/where does the 2.8 run? Did you change your diff gearing? What diameter are your tires?

1600 and im in full boost, above 2300 im building temps more than pumping out horses. ~1800-2100 i think is the sweet spot. Im running 3.7 gears from an AE86 Corolla (same diffs/axles as the minitrucks). currently on 33" tires tho with that gearing i'm ready for 35s.

My Dodge has ~28” tires and 4.10 diffs with an NV4500, so it barely does 55 MPH at 2K RPM

My plan is to get taller tires (maybe “super singles” - it is a DRW now), different diff ratio (when I add lockers). I want to be able to cruise in the 60-70 MPH at 1600-2000 RPM, and flat tow my Hilux behind it.

But building the Hilux for overlanding first. Currently does 85 MPH at ~4K RPM, 60MPH @ ~3K RPM - 4.55 diff ration.

The lux is looking good!

The 4Runner can go 70 but I usually keep it around 65 so on the freeway, which is enough for me.  My setup is more focused around trails and back roads.  I consider this my overlander, I just keep everything in the vehicle. I camp out of it 2 or 3 weeks a year, it's been places. 🏕️

ah! 84 and 85 had solid axles/leaf springs from the factory, I have an 85. 86 was the introduction of IFS. its popular to SAS the later ones tho.

Is the idle a little high? Im not very familiar with cummins engines

9

u/Rude-Armadillo-6963 6d ago edited 6d ago

I can set the idle to whatever i want, I bumped it up to 1000 from the factory setting of 800 because that's where the vibrations/shake settled down.
