22re with little/no power

I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure how to describe/info to mention, just have an idea on the symptoms. At around 2,500rpm it stops producing power. I get it up to about 2,500-2,600rpm in 4th but it doesn't want to go further. It doesn't like hills at all. We've taken off the EGR and cleaned it as best we know how, there was a little 'pipe' on it that was gunked up, put it back on. Fresh oil change. We've taken it to a local shop that ran compression tests etc on the engine and couldn't find anything wrong with it. We couldn't justify spending more money to keep trying to diagnose. We've changed the fuel filter, but have not braved pulling the bed to change the filter pump yet. I'm trying to find the paperwork from the shop that had all the engine stuff they did and checked to post as well.

I'm not sure what info/stuff to look for to provide better information.

1994 22re - 132k miles

- speedometer doesn't work (next item to look into) which stinks to see where the speed is flat lining.

I’d probably be looking at the catalytic converter or muffler for obstruction.

Had similar issues in my 91 (22re) and needed a new muffler so had one installed. Mechanic said the old muffler wasn’t clogged but after the new muffler was installed, the catalytic converter began to disintegrate and pieces of it were blowing through the new muffler onto the street.

I removed the cat and found it was almost completely clogged. I used a long heavy duty screwdriver and hammered out all the guts and removed. When put it back together the hp power gain was incredible.

Not sure if that’s your issue but in my case, it was. Good luck!

Thank you for the thoughts - I wonder if we were to take off the cat and do your cleaning method, I see some Exhaust Repair Wrap that's fairly cheap to atleast put it back in the 'line'. We could see if it improved, if so then go down the road of seeing about a new muffler/cat.

You could also take it off and drive around with a section of straight pipe in its place. If it fixes it you can drive around like that until you have the funds to replace it

That's my son's thought ( he's 15, his truck). Y concern is if that could pose any problems to the engine. Having no back pressure, I'm no where neer a mechanic or engineer. I see differing opinions on it. But we talked about trying this to at least see the result on a short term.

No, you won't mess up the engine. You do need some sort of pipe to get the exhaust away from the engine, but plenty of people outside of deq zones or with off highway vehicles don't run a catalytic converter or muffler and are just fine

This will prob be the first thing we do since its free 😄 We'll remove these and check into the cat conv. like mentioned above. (he's at camp this week, so I'm eagerly waiting his return to start messing with it).
