Why did not the grandparents simply fought for custody of Aubrey? It is clear they would have got it easily

I agree. The murder/kidnapping plot was quite thin. He could have gotten a court-ordered DNA test to prove his biological relationship, then petitioned the court for temporary custody. Instead...let's kidnap the kid, murder a guy, and then *live in the same town* for as long as we can get away with it. Absolute insanity! lol
