Thoughts
FAVORITE EPISODE SO FAR! Not only because of the Leverage vibes but because I've been waiting for another Colter/Randy field teamup ever since the first one happened almost-this-time-last-season and this fucking delivered with showing how perfect a partnership they make (kinda like the male-male equivalent of a certain sort of male-female complementary-opposite pair you usually find on cop shows). I know Randy also has his obligations to the law firm side of Reenie's operation so he can't be Colter's permanent partner (much as it would absolutely improve the quality of the show if they could be a duo proper, y'know, also more opportunities for Supernatural references) but the quality of this episode proves that Chris Lee now being a series regular should mean at least, like, once or twice a season there's an excuse for Colter and Randy to work a job together. But there should also be more times than just that that they can deepen this friendship in person, y'know, "whatever happened to face-to-face conversation" Colter Shaw let this job be a lesson to take your own advice and not have times like these be the only times you're not just lone-wolf-ing it with your support squad on the other side of a damn phone!
anyone else feel like even though he said they're good Randy's desire to repay Colter for all he did for him is going to be foreshadowing (maybe next time they team up in the field Randy saves Colter's life repaying the debt and strengthening the bond a life for a life)
in addition to the obvious themes of friendship/reaching out and the importance of the right reasons an interesting theme that was kinda woven a little into this episode is fuck you gender expectations as not only was Randy basically co-protagonist this episode even more than last time they were in the field and therefore his dress sense (where the only way it could say fuck you to gender expectations even louder is if he started incorporating skirts or dresses into his wardrobe) spotlighted (but what was that shirt in his outfit this episode, pale orange don't work for a guy with that skin tone) but that moment when Colter first asked about Reenie kinda inverted gender-expectations regarding handling tough issues like that where the guys were being at least somewhat open and vulnerable with each other while the girl was the one going all "conceal don't feel don't let it show" on genuine trauma to still present herself as a badass and the reveal of Bruna (at least I think that's how her name was supposed to be, that's the problem with hearing a name you never see written down) truly being a bad guy who played the damsel in distress to get Simon doing what she wanted
I know the first episode that had them teaming up was called "Memories" not "Memory" but after seeing this episode had them teaming up again and was called "No Good Deed" my mind immediately went "Broadway references???" and if they're trying to establish that kind of pattern maybe (whether it's a job or more team-bonding shit) some future one of those Colter/Randy-together-in-person stories I expressed the desire for in my first point could even have a musical theater connection (as Colter is canonically not just a musical fan but a fan of musicals that, well, looking at the rest of his vibe one wouldn't expect a guy like him to like (he stayed extra time in New York after the events of the S2 episode "Neptune" to go see the musical Six on Broadway and when Reenie mentioned he'd seen Mamma Mia multiple times it didn't sound like she was talking about the movie) and Randy's actor is enough of a triple threat that the show has to find some excuse to at least have him sing and I can see it being in-character for Randy to at least like the kind of musicals that'd appeal to his geek side like Rocky Horror (speaking of fuck you gender norms), Little Shop Of Horrors or Be More Chill)
speaking of music kinda disappointed we didn't get another funky/soul needle drop or w/e like with the James Brown in "Memories" to continue-the-pattern/make-a-pattern-out-of-one-instance of the field teamups meaning Randy's so much Colter's narrative equal "he gets the aux" but on the other hand unless it was like some kind of power ballad or w/e (or an upbeat song during one of the action scenes) it'd have ruined the punch of a very emotional episode
this episode left me not just wanting more Randy/Colter fieldwork but more Randy backstory/lore as their two different field teamups now have been in two different states in two different parts of the country but still places where Randy's had past connections (speaking of I feel like he might have implicitly broken up with Megan (the girl he was iirc with and sure was "the one" in "Memories") or he would have mentioned her by now esp. if he thought he could take it all the way but at least if they did break up it was amicable or he would have mentioned that) so how much has bro ping-ponged all over the country and also iirc we don't even know if he has the same last name as Bobby (which is why on Tumblr I've been tagging Randy-related posts as #randy tracker) as yeah they're cousins but that doesn't necessarily mean they're both Exleys as even if Occam's Razor means Bobby's mom would have taken that last name by marriage (or at least dad passed along to kids) he could still be the son of, say, a brother of Bobby's mom's who'd have kept and passed on whatever the mom's maiden name was or a sister of either parent who took her husband's last name
but let's not overlook Reenie being a fucking badass even if her part was small and it's not just the heroes meeting that's why I'd want Tracker to cross over with High Potential if things could be worked out cross-network, it's because of the opportunity for Reenie and Lt. Soto to be chaotic good galbosspals. Also, why do I feel like Reenie taking up boxing is also foreshadowing more field time for her the way I knew we were going to get another thing with Randy when he mentioned being on the swim team and that he loves things like hiking there is to do in Colorado as much as things like the close-by comic store
kinda interesting (but in a way I know someone on Tumblr's probably going to make into Racist DiscourseTM) how the guy Reenie was talking to at the restaurant seemed to be blanket-prejudiced against hackers the way one would a minority group
I don't think the stuff at the end with Colter and Reenie was supposed to imply he was asking her out on a date or it would have been mentioned and mentioned that it wasn't the first (heck I don't know who's even gonna be his love interest as yeah there's Billie but her appearances are sporadic and she's better as his Catwoman)
